I spotted this tidbit in "The Hill Family of Chowan County, North Carolina", copyrighted in 1990, ISBN 0-9625365-0-4, as a privately printed publication of 350 copies. The extensive book is authored by Anne L. McCarthy, located at 7746 Lochmere Terrace, Edina, Minnesota 55439. "Edward Hill was living at Basse's Choice at the time of the Good Friday massacre in 1623. He survived and escaped with William and Thomas Hill to Elizabeth Cay. He is known to have held a land grant of one hundred acres there. He may have been wounded on that day, as he is listed as dying in Elizabeth City in May of 1624. The "Census of the Living" also lists as survivors his wife, Hannah (Jordan) Ashton, and their daughter, Elizabeth, the one mentioned in Thomas Spilman's Muster as "borne in Virginia." He is also a survived by a son, Edward II (the first to settle at Shirley Hundred); a grandson, Colonel Edward Hill III, and a great-grandson, IV. All of the Edward Hills were Burgesses, Members of the Council, and held other offices in the Virginia colony." "Shirley," the home built by the fourth Edward Hill, still stands on the northern shore of the James River above Williamsburg. Shirley Plantation, granted to Edward Hill in 1660, features the pineapple (the Colonial symbol of hospitality) in the hand-carved woodwork in the house, and as a three-foot finial on the peak of the roof. And for good reason --- Shirley was a well-known center of hospitality in Colonial times. The Hills and Carters entertained the Byrds and Harrisons, not to mention Washington, Jefferson and other prominent Virginians at Shirley." "During the Revolution, Shirley was a supply center for the Continental Army. Twice, it was a listening post for both sides in the no-man's land between the British at City Point, now Hopewell, and Layafette's army at Malvern Hill." "A century later, during the War Between the States, Shirley survived the Peninsula Campaign and the struggle for nearby Richmond, the Confederate capital. Anne Hall Carter, wife of Henry Light-Horse Harry Lee, of Stratford and mother of General Robert E. Lee, was born at Shirley. The famous Confederate general, widely regarded as one of the greatest Americans of all time, received part of his schooling in the converted laundry house." -----Original Message----- From: Marheinek@aol.com [mailto:Marheinek@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2000 1:38 PM To: HILL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HILL-L] HILL-CARTER-LEE Just came across e-mail written Oct 30, 1997 by Elaine Vincent Kantor Thought you might be interested. "This is a fascinating article in THE VIRGINIAN PILOT newspaper (Norfold, VA Beach, Va area) regarding a Martha Hill known as "Aunt Pratt" whose family lived at Shirley Plantation in charles City Co. VA near Williamsburg in the 17th century. The article concerns a portrait of Martha Hill that hangs in the present day Shirley Plantation and the ghostly doings of Martha Hill's spirit. There is also some genealogical information which I can not vouvh for, but will list below. If you are connected with this family and would like a xerox copy of the article, let me know and I (Justin M. Kantor musical@pilot.inf.net) will take some copies. As far as I know, I'm not connected to these Hills so have no futher info other than what is in article. Section below is extracted in part and quoted in part from article. 1- Col.
