    3. I took interest because I have other (NY) Hill, Flanders in the Saline/White/Gallatin Co area and have idly wondered who other Hills around might be. Yours is a mess! I found them 1870 and if I had to guess I'd think some neighbor gave info to the enumerator - or the household flat out didn't want to give personal info. It stated all the family but the baby was born IA. Now, Lewis could have been born IA 1814 but. I only found Christiana 1880, she said her mother was b KY. Where does Jane say her parents were born? I tried to track Jackson but the most-likely one I found died 1869 and his father was a John. It doesn't look like Jackson's dead, but I've found dead people enumerated before because of the instructions asking who lived there on the given date. Gotta remember to look for Andrew Jackson Hill and that he was old enough to maybe serve in the war. Of the 1840 heads of households in *Iowa Territory* none are named Louis/Lewis. There was no 18-teens Iowa. 1850 Iowa's a State and there is one Lewis. Here's that bunch: Amanda M Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1850 Iowa Elizabeth E Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1824 Virginia Jesse F Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1823 Ohio Lewis Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1818 Ohio Mary C Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1845 Ohio Sarah Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1832 Ohio Sarah J Hill Bloomfield, Davis, IA abt 1848 Iowa I gave up on that and went to 1860 IA to try to find babies John, Nancy & Jane. And gave up. The only Lewis: Lewis D Hill Pella, Marion, IA 50 1809 Virginia Hannah Hill Pella, Marion, IA 44 1815 Ohio John Hill Pella, Marion, IA 16 1843 Ohio Sarah Hill Pella, Marion, IA 13 1846 Ohio Rachel Hill Pella, Marion, IA 11 1848 Indiana William Hill Pella, Marion, IA 8 1851 Indiana Le Roy Hill Pella, Marion, IA 7 1852 Indiana Emeline Hill Pella, Marion, IA 1 1858 Iowa Aw rats. 1880 John & Jane, White Co IL, she says KY IA KY, John says KY KY KY and his mother's with them, says she was b IL. 1900 John & Jane in Gallatin Co, again Jane sez KY IA KY & John's decided he was b MO. Sticking with IA almost sounds like something's being covered up or else they/she really didn't know where "Lewis" was from? I took a look 1880 for the parents again through those IL counties, nothing really jumped out among mine & the unknowns but hey maybe they're in there somewhere? 3. I'm puzzled at the north/south connection. I have wondered who Eber Hill was, if he's related to mine, or how. He was said to be born in Delaware Co NY, father might've been William, his mother was Hannah. He married Julia Matilda Lydia Weld. Your Hannah who married Conley didn't move far from Steuben Co NY, just took the road up to Yates Co NY after the Civil War. One of Hannah's sisters, Angeline, also married a David Conley. They're none of 'em southerners. You can find Charles with a Townsend family 1850 at Jerusalem, Yates Co. I know nothing of the other bunch. 1. Northern & Southern Hill lines in detail
    2. "sam"
    3. Hello again to everyone! I had so many answers asking for details I thought I had better write the whole list! Here goes! First is my Northern Hill line. 1 Eber HILL 2 Hannah HILL b: 15 Mar 1843 d: 22 Sep 1921 + Charles E. CONLEY b: 14 Sep 1834 d: 27 Sep 1891 3 Susan A. CONLEY b: Abt Jan 1863 3 Eber Weld CONLEY b: Abt Nov 1864 3 Nora B. CONLEY b: 4 Nov 1869 d: 12 May 1881 this line goes back to Early New Eng. as follows; Peter Tallman spent two years in Barbados. It was there he met and married his first wife, Ann Hill, the daughter of Phillip and Ann Hill.1648 Peter Tallman settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where he set up business as an apothecary. Peter Tallman also served as interpreter for the court between the Dutch and the English. In December, 1658, Peter Tallman moved to Portsmouth, Rhode Island. They had six children in all; Mary, Elizabeth, Peter, Ann, Joseph, Susanna, and a girl whose name is unknown. In 1661, the freemen of Portsmouth elected him to the Court of Commissioners. He was divorced in 1665. In 1664, Peter Tallman brought suit against Thomas Durfee, complaining that Durfee's attitude toward Tallman's wife, Ann, was disrespectful. Tallman said that Durfee's insolent carriage placed him in danger. The court sent for Durfee and advised him to behave. They were too discreet to reveal whether Durfee was gossiping about Ann Tallman, saying rude things to her or courting her attention. The last is doubtful as Peter's son Benjamin married Patience Durfee, Tom Durfee's daughter, in 1708. Tallman would never have permitted the marriage of his son to the daughter of a man who seduced his wife. Of course, that was the year that Peter Tallman dies so the possibility cannot be ruled out completely. About seven months later, in May 1665, Peter filed for divorce from his wife , accusing her of adultery. In the Puritan colonies, adultery was a capital offense, though seldom punished to the full degree of the law. Ann Tallman wrote a letter to Peter Tallman informing his that her youngest daughter was not his. After hearing the letter read to her, Ann confessed to adultery. The court sentenced her to a fine of ten pounds and ordered that she be whipped. She was to receive fifteen lashes in Portsmouth, and the following week, fifteen lashes in Newport. She requested mercy of the court. In considering her petition, the Assembly asked if she was willing to reconcile with her husband, "to which her answer was, that she would rather cast herselfe on the mercy of God if he take away her life, than to returne". Ann Tallman was sent to jail to await the carrying out of her sentence, but she escaped and fled to her brother in Virginia. In 1667, she returned to the colony and a warrant was issued for her arrest. Rather than being punished for her escape, she was rewarded. Her fine was forgiven and her sentence was cut in half. Instead of fifteen lashes in Portsmouth and Newport, she would only be whipped in Newport. Two months after his divorce, on July 24, 1665, he filed a pre-marriage contract with Joan Briggs. Chief Wamsetta referred to Peter Tallman as his "well-beloved friend" in the deed. One of Tallman's grandchildren, also named Peter Tallman, married an Indian woman. They were married before Tallman's death and lived at Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard. Because of the land Peter owned in the Vineyard of the Tribes, his grandson had to have married within the Chiefs family. Now for my Southern HILL line and people will say..look.. there are Conleys also..yes, and the mystery of their connection to the North is a mystery to me also! 3. Yep, Sam, I research the same Hills as Elaine. From others on this list and the Hill DNA project I've learned that it's pretty sure that 1-2 earlier generation Hill brothers went south, as well, from MA or RI. I can't say I know their route or timing, maybe before 1700, maybe 1st to MD then VA? There's this other thing - I don't know what the shakeup might have been, maybe War of 1812-14, but I find Virginians with spouses from NH, VT, & from all over New England, beginning 1850 census when it's easy to tell. It's one thing to look at a map and say aha, it's just a shortish sail from one coastal state to another for some of those states, but NH and VT seems another tale entirely. On the other hand, by 1850 nothing surprises me about people. I find folks in NY born in TX and OH, and wouldja look at OR & UT Territories! All without railroads or SUVs. The point is, we need Hill males to participate in the yDNA project! I've got one who has told me he would then seems to blow it off, dunno why. Or maybe he has and I don't recognize the sample? The 2 main reasons I've run into in other surname DNA projects are $$, and privacy. I guess I need to run down my Hill distant-cousin again and be pushy. And I've found more than one. I'm just not good at pushy. Say, Sam - Are you a Hill? Do you have uncles, cousins, any living related males with Hill surname you could track down for the project? Pleeeeease? 3. Yes, that is interesting. The same thing happens much later as well. My branch is the Caleb Hill tribe, descended probably from John Hill of Dorchester. This family settled in New York for several generations and then, c 1815, Caleb and all his sons/dters and spouses moved on to Ohio. So they are certainly "Northern Hills." And yet, I keep turning up Virginia references. Some of them seemed to have moved back & forth between Ohio and Virginia (trailing confusing little records in both places)! Of course there are many many possible reasons that they were moving around but one would be that there were family "connections" in both places. Who are your Anna and James? Are you thinking that they might be the origin of a Southern branch? They have a small grant for building period fencing and are listing donors' names on a sign just installed at an information booth. They also have the Hill story on a recording that's played with the push of a button and are working frantically on landscaping. They have prepared what is called a "project book" with facts about the Hills and the property. This is $12 plus $3 s/h if you're interested. A driving tour for visitors to the dedication ceremony is being prepared. This includes places associated with the family as Hills were quite a large part of their early history. They also do programs at schools and other places and say they are finding relatives everywhere! Donations are being accepted in any amount if anyone is interested in preserving whats left of the old house. They are working now on a matching grant ($2,500 for $2,500) by end of September 2005. This is from the Opler Foundation. If you wish to donate, please send check marked "Fort Project" to FCoHS, PO Box 905, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.

When I did not give children’s names it is because I am not sure if they are living or not. I hope this helps some one make a connection. Or can assist me a bit further. Kimbra Hill-Smith 1.
