    1. [HILL-L] Minnie HILL Reed, dau. Dr. John Stith HILL
    2. (A small victory at last...) I finally proved that Minnie Hill, dau. of Dr. John Stith Hill and Sarah Brown Cameron, granddaughter of John J. Hill, and niece of Sen. Benjamin Harvey Hill, is buried in the family cemetery in Long Cane, GA. I had visited the John J. Hill property last year and taken down the dates and epitaphs of six of the eleven family graves there. I have always felt Minnie Hill was there since her husband, Fauntleroy Todd Reed was buried there but could not prove it until now. After several communications with the Troup County Historian in LaGrange, GA, I was sent a folder of HILL/REED information which contained funeral home records and obituaries. It also gave me her dates of birth and death which I was missing, and names of her children. Minnie's obituary, obtained from the Troup Co., Archives, states she was a member of the First Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She died at City-County Hospital in LaGrange, and had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Allen Johnson in West Point. According to her obituary, "burial at Long Cane family cemetery followed the last rites." (per Troup Co. Historian, F. C. Johnson III, 6/21/99, her obituary in the LaGrange Daily News, May 21, 1940, and records of Hammett & Groover Funeral Home in LaGrange, GA) Obituary from LaGrange Daily News, May 21, 1940. "MRS REED RITES ARE HELD MONDAY Wife of Late Police Chief Succumbs At Hospital Saturday Funeral services for Mrs. Todd (Minnie Hill) Reed, wife of the late Todd Reed who for many years was the chief of police in LaGrange, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Hammett and Groover funeral chapel. The Rev. M. M. Maxwell, pastor of the First Methodist church and Dr. Willis E. Howard, pastor of the First Baptist church, were the officiating ministers. Burial at Long Cane family cemetery followed the last rites and the following served as pallbearers: Judge Lee B. Wyatt, Pearce Cleaveland, J. A. Bennett, C. W. Sutherland, J. H. Moss, Otis Cleaveland. Mrs. Reed was born in the Long Cane community February 7, 1868 and had lived in LaGrange for 33 years where she was a member of the First Methodist church, the Eastern Star, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was the niece of the late Benjamin Harvey Hill and had been in ill health for four months prior to her death. She was 72 years of age and had resided recently with a daughter, Mrs. Allen Johnson in West Point. Mrs. Reed succumbed at the City-County Hospital at 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening. Among the survivors are the following: Three sons, W. P. Reed of West Point, A. P. Reed of Montgomery, AL, B. Harvey Reed, Sr. of LaGrange, one daughter, Mrs. Allen Johnson of West Point; four grandchildren, Harvey Reed Jr., Miss Elizabeth Reed, Miss Katherine Reed, LaGrange, and Allen Johnson Jr. of West Point. Hammett and Groover had charge of the arrangements." _______________________________________________________ Get your free, private email at http://mail.excite.com/

    2. I had a good response from people saying they would like to see the information from the following book. (I only hope the formatting comes through correctly when I send this) Jackie Southside Virginia Families by John Bennett Boddie, Vol. I, reprinted 1999, Clearfield Co., Baltimore, MD. THE HILL FAMILY of Bertie, Martin, and Halifax Counties, N.C., pp. 241-245. The first of this Hill family of whom there is any record is Isaac Hill who died in Bertie precinct in 1710. It is probably that he came to Bertie frm Nansemond County, Virginia, but it is impossible, owing to the loss of the Nansemond records, to learn the date of his removal or the names of his parents. His will was dated March 5, 1710 and probated that same year. According to his will he had issue, Michael Hill, Isaac Hill, Nathaniel Hill, and John Hill, of whom later. 1. John Hill, son of Isaac, was a large land and slave owner in Bertie County, and lived near the site of the present town of Woodsville. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in August, 1749 and represented Bertie County in the General Assembly in 1760. In 1742 , he married Martha Whitmel, the widow of Henry Laurence Bate and one of the eleven children of Thomas Whitmel and Elizabeth Bryan of Bertie County. The will of Henry L. Bate, Martha Whitmel's first cousin, was probated in Bertie in 1740. The will of John Hill was dated June 12th, 1762 and was probated in December of the same year. 1. John Hill and Martha Whitmel had issue. a) Whitmel Hill, born Feb. 12th, 1743 - of whom later. b) Mary Hill married Thomas Ballard of Bertie County but had no issue. c) Sarah Hill married Frances Pugh, son of Col. Thomas Pugh, but had no issue. d) Henry Hill, attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg in 1776. He married Martha, the oldest daughter of Joseph John Williams of "Rock Hill" plantation in western Halifax County. They had one son, Joseph John Hill, who died unmarried in 1808. Martha Williams married 2) Dr. Samuel Thorne and had issue. e) Elizabeth Hill married Jonathan Jacocks, the son of Jonathan Jacocks and Mary Blount of Bertie County. They had issue. 1. Charles Worth Jacocks married Janette House and had issue. 2. Jonathan Jacocks married Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Hardy Hill and Janey Bryan of Bertie. Hardy Hill was a grandson of Nathaniel Hill, mention in the will of Isaac Hill, d. 1710 above. 3. John Hill Jacocks settled in Hartford, Conn. where he left descendants. 4. Anne W. Jacocks married Richard Nixon and had issue. 5. Thomas Jacocks died unmarried. f) Winifred Hill married William Scott Pugh, son of Col. Thomas Pugh of Bertie Co. and had issue. 1. Dr. Joseph Hill Pugh, d.s.p. (abbreviation for died single person) 2. Thomas Pugh, d.s.p. 3. John Hill Pugh married Elizabeth Lockhart. 4. Elizabeth Hill Pugh, d.s.p. 5. Henry Hill Pugh married Susan Dunn 6. Sarah Winifred Pugh married William Turnstall. 7. James Pugh married Sarah Anderson. 8. Dr. Whitmel Hill Pugh married Mary Whitmel Bryan, widow of his first cousin John Hill, d. 1802, of Bertie. Dr. Pugh was graduated in medicine from the University of PA and moved to Louisiana in 1819. He acquired large holdings on both sides of the Bayou La Fourche and became a noted sugar planter. (See Plantation Parade by Harnett Kane) 9. William Pugh married Frances Helen Slade of Bertie and had issue, among others, Frances Pugh who was the first wife of Dr. Stephen Norfleet of "Woodburne", Bertie County, N.C. 2. Col. Whitmel Hill, son of John Hill and Martha Whitmel, was graduated from the University of PA in 1760, and in 1761 married his first cousin Winifred Blount, the daughter of Thomas Blount and Elizabeth Whitmel, widow to George Pollock. Mrs. Blount married after the death of her second husband in 1745, William Williams of Martin County. Whitmel Hill lived at Hill's Ferry, near the present village of Palmyra in eastern Halifax County. During the Revolution, he was first Lt. Colonel and then Colonel of the Martin County Militia, a representative of Martin County at the Congresses in Hillsboro in 1775 and Halifax in 1776, a Councillor of State, and a delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. He died Sept. 12th, 1797 at Palmyra and his will was probated in Martin County. His remains were later removed to Trinity Churchyard, Scotland Neck. (See: "The Life and Letters of Whitmel Hill", by Gov. D. L. Swain, in the March 1861 issue of the University of N.C. Magazine. Also the Colonial and State Records of NC, and Ballard vs. Hill, 7 NC Supreme Court Reports, p. 332.) Col. Hill and his wife Winifred Blount had issue. a) Dr. Joseph Blount Hill, b. John Anthony, when he moved to North Carolina, brought with him a portrait of himself painted by his cousin Gilbert Stuart. During the Civil War, Mrs. William Whitmel Anthony, who then owned the picture, had it boxed and lowered in the Roanoke River, to prevent its seizure by the Union troops who were then in the neighborhood of Scotland Neck. 1. [HILL-L] HILL family of Bertie, Martin and Halifax Counties, NC
    2. Recently I bought a book titled "Southside Virginia Families" by John Bennet Boddie, Vol. 1, originally pub. 1955, reprinted most recently in 1999, Baltimore, MD. I was hoping the section on "The Hill Family of Bertie, Martin, and Halifax Counties, NC" was going to be about "my" Isaac Hill, Sr. line. It turned out to be about one of the other Isaac Hill lines, the one who died in Bertie precinct in 1710, whose will was dated March 5, 1710 and probated the same year. According to his will he had issue, Michael Hill, Isaac Hill, Nathaniel Hill, and John Hill. Pages 241 thru 245 follows the next several generations. Names associated with these Hills through marriage are WHITMEL, BLOUNT, PUGH, and others. I am generally acquainted with this line through my own rsearch and from watching posts of others descended from this line. The information in this book may be "old hat" to those of you researching these particular Hills, therefore, before I go ahead and transcribe the information in the book for the Hill list, I thought I'd ask to see if it would be new or useful information to some of you. Let me know please. Regards, Jackie Hill Bower _______________________________________________________ Get your free, private email at http://mail.excite.com/

    3. Hello fellow Hill researchers, I would like to thank everyone who responded to my earlier message about Nancy D. Hill. Several weeks ago I discovered her marriage record and posted the information to the list as follows: William B. Howard and Nancy D. Hill who were married in Chambers County, Alabama 17 October 1844. William B. Howard and Sion L. Hill were securities for the marriage bond. Source: Microfilm #1290836. Marriage Record Book 3, Page 178, Chambers County, Alabama. Since then I have obtained copies of several deeds for Chambers County, Alabama which lists Sion L. Hill as residing in Harris County, GA., Chambers County, Alabama, and Macon County, Alabama. I am trying to find documented proof that Sion L. Hill and Frances Dismukes were the parents of Nancy D. Hill, along with information on their other children. Also, I would like to know if there are any descendants of Sion L. Hill and Frances Dismukes on this mailing list. Below is a list of information I have obtained in the last few weeks. Can anyone add to this list? Sion L. Hill and Frances Dismukes. Sion L. Hill married Frances Dismukes, 5 Dec 1818, Jones County, GA.
