    3. Bryon, I recall an inquiry or perhaps a statement regarding the interpretation of "Per Deum Et Ferrum Obtinui" being posted not too long ago...after considering your rapid response, my question still remains. Should you recall that interpretation or perhaps have it within your extensive website, I wouldn't object to you forwarding it to me. To enhance your offered wisdom, perhaps the website of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., one of which I have only a bookmark connection, may be enlightening to others. It has been educating for me and may be found for those whom choose, at the SCA Armorial ... http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/heraldry/OandA/ Oh! Yes, I'm sure there are other heraldic primers available to all and my absence of their reference is made with no offense. With best wishes, I remain. David Hill

My high school Latin is "rusty "and yes, I've misplaced the > earlier Hill's Group email.Would that individual please repost it or send it > directly to me please? I just thought I would mention that there is no such motto that anyone could call "the" Hill family motto. Various families (usually only those families with social status and wealth) all over Europe made family flags, crests, and had slogans or mottos. There is no one motto that applies to the HILL family or any other family. The family crest is fairly worthless today as far as authenticity goes. The sale of such items today in the hobby of genealogy is even considered by most to be highly questionable. Who knows which HILL family had what on their crest, and it seems unlikely that anyone would ever know for sure which HILL family from that period (the period during which these crests were used) they were descended from anyway. I always tell people that if they want a family crest, they are just as entitled (as people were then) to make their own. It might mean more to design their own for your own family line, and present it that way, as something you created. If you find out more about the history behind the motto you mentioned, please let me know. Just food for thought. Byron Hill

    3. Have ancestors who settled 1800's in Patten and Lewiston, ME; 1800's in Canaan, Sanbornton, Franklin, NH. Also in 1917, one Hill moved from ME in 1896 and became a merchant in Boston. Also, Hallowell, ME ancestor filed marriage intent there in 1871 but could not document marriage. I am trying to locate information of what forts or protection from Indian uprising or what have caused these ancestors to be on the move in this era. They had occupations of shoemaker, harness maker, farmer, iceman, mail controller, merchant and, of course, housewife for the women. Thanks for reading and hope to get some great response. 3. I am trying to connect James Hill and Sarah Tidd to Hugh Hill Tidd and his grandfather Hugh Hill. I am convinced everyone is related. While James Hill was living in Trumbull County, Ohio, Hugh Hill was living nearby, across the border in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Then eventually Hugh and James show up in Hardin County, Ohio. If I remember correctly Hugh married Rebecca Tidd. There is also an Adam Hill who lived in Mercer County, Penn. His wife's name was Rosanna. James and Sarah named one of their daughters Rosanna. It is very likely that Adam and Rosanna Hill are related as well. I hope someone has some information. I hope to hear from you soon. 2. Marie Matthews
    3. Hello, Older Hill family members have told me that my 3rd gr grandfather was Greenberry HILL b. 1783 Where ? They say he was on a Maury Co. records. census and other Maury Co.,Tn records. The story goes that he left Maury Co. Tn. and moved to Illinois. He had 9 or so childrenat the time he moved. While living there 4 or 5 of his children diedand maybe he died also. I know of only one child. : My 2nd gr grandfather, John Wesley HILL[probably by a different mother as he was olderthan the others] b Nov., 9 1815 married Susanna RAIL in Nov.25 , 1840 in Maury Co Tn. He died on May 1, 1867 They are both buried in Maury Co .,Tnin the'"Rail or Hill Cemetery. in the Northwestern corner of Maury Co..I think it is on the RAIL farm. I have 9 children listed for them. I have a lot of that family recorded and descendents from there on down to now. John Wesley went to Ill. and brought the surviving children back to Maury Co and they are living in the adjoining household number on the 1850 census , Ibelieve. They were probably his half sisters ans brothers. I have a copy of thier names [from that census]here someplace. I have never been able to locate those children. They are not on the 1860 Maury Co Tn Census. I have that census.[John Wesley and Susanna HILL are on it with their family.] If anyone else is working on these folks, I sure would like for you to contact me. I will share my info . Mr. HILL, I though I could hook up with one of the families that you have on your webpages but I have never been able to do it. I know there was a Green HILL in Williamson Co.,Tn.-couldnt do anything with him either. Any clues or info would certainly be appreciated.-- Any questions you have Iwill try to answer Thank you, Marie Hill Matthews marie@usit.net

    2. Earl E. Bishop
    3. Old newspaper clipping pressed in old family Bible reads as follows: (no title of newspaper, but pencil note states, "written in 1893": Newspaper Column titled OLD SIXTY. " Writes about the Old Settlers About Elkmont, (Tennessee) DAVID C. HILL." " Mr. Hill came from Virginia in the year 1829 . His wife was Rebecca Buyse. She came from Lincoln County, Georgia near the town of Augusta. They were married in the year 1833. When the writer first knew them they lived about one and a half miles north of Elkmont. Before Mr. Hill's death he bought a place at Pettusville and moved his family to it, to be convenient to his church and have better advantages of educating his children. At that place his life terminated, he was for many years a consistent member of the M.E. Church and died in the Christian faith. His companion is still living; she makes her home with her children, principally with her daughter in Giles county, Tenn. They raised a family of eleven children, consisting of three sons and seven daughters. Socrates, the oldest, married Annnanira Fogg. After the war he moved to west Tennessee and after a few years there he was murdered by a man whom he was trying to keep his daughter from marrying. His widow is! also dead, but his children are still living in that country. John W., first married Emma Redus, daughter of Thomas and Martha A. Redus. After her death he married Emma Tweedy. He is now living in Athens, Alabama. Fountain P., married Albertie Westmoreland, a daughter of A.G. Westmoreland, of Pettusville, Ala. She lived only a short time after marriage. He also went to West Tennessee and died there a few months ago. Emma married a Mr. Conoly and was left a widow with two children, after which she married J.W. Martin, of Mooresville, Ala, and is now living at that place. Mary married Milton Weatherford. They lived in the forks of Elk and Tennessee River at which place she died leaving two children,a son and daughter. Her daughter married J.W. Davies, Jr., of State Line or Veto, Ala. Lucy married Ezekiel Hughey. They both died in this county leaving three little girls who are living in Tennessee. Rebecca married Samuel Donnevant. They settled near Pulaski, Tenn., at which place Mr. D., died several years ago. She still lives on the farm and is managing it splendidly, and is making a handsome support for herself and children. Her mother makes her home with her principally. Dollie married Robert Donevant and is living near Blanche, Tenn. Sallie, a very amiable, lovely girl, just as she was budding into womanhood, died under the parental roof. She never married. Loui married Wil! lis Alred and is now living at Hanceville, Alabama. David Hill operated one of the larger farms in his area. He enjoyed a very good reputation and was an outstanding citizen of his time. His family belonged to the Pettusville Methodist Church."
