List Members, I am new to this site. Has anyone done family research on Halsey Hill, b. Jan 30, 1800 at Uxbridge, MA. He was the son of John Hill and Charlotte Fuller. He married Ophelia Branch, b. April 25, 1805, at Uxbridge, MA. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Branch and Rachel Wheelock, both of Uxbridge, MA. Halsey and Ophelia had two children: Marion Angeline Hill, b. Nov 1, 1826 and Minerva Letitia Rosealine Hill, b. June 15, 1828. Among the bits and pieces of scrap paper, with scribbled notes, that constitute my "files" I find that at some point along the way I made the following notes: ------"Hill, Minerva Letita Rosealine--1890 Territorial Census." ------"Hill, Marion Angeline--The Husbands Data Base of Early Hunt County" I do not seem able to put these notes into any context, or find whatever site(s) I was at when these notes were written. Does anyone have any thoughts? Would like to identify the descendants of these folks. Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks. Stu Branch
Bernie of N. Virginia-- Does your HILL family connect with that of Franklin and Rebecca HILL whose son William Wright HILL was born in KY in 1823? I think the HILLs originated in VA and became Kentuckians as land changed hands. I have little information before William Wright HILL's birth. He named one of his daughters "Russella," which points to an Uncle Russell somewhere in the family tree! Thanks. Kit b.

Bernie, Do you have info on other VA Hills after the time they moved to VA. I'm looking for Nathaniel Hill from Goochland Co./Amherst Co, VA
Howdy All Hill Researchers: I would like to start by saying that I am not a descendant of the HILL Family. My beloved wife, now deceased, was the grandaughter of Mary Belle Hill who descended from Col Abel Hill and Elizabeth Waggoner. In the last 10 plus years I have done extensive research on the Hill Family of Virginia, because Mary Belle always said that she was a cousin of the famous Civil War General Ambrose Powell Hill. In my research at the Virginia Room of the Fairfax County Library in Virginia I came across the following information. "The taproot of the Hill Family stretched back to the 12th century in England and its ancestors belonged to the noble family of HULL. For reasons unknown the name changed to HILL sometime during the reign of King Henry VI (1422-1461). Some evidence suggests the HULLS descended from the Hamlet Plantagenet a son of King Henry II." During the early part of the colonization of Virginia several members of the HILL Family emigrated to the eastern shore of Virginia. In 1630 Henry Hill of Shropshire England and his brother William settled in the area that later became Middlesex Co., VA. In the year of 1740 Russell Hill, who was a great grandson of William, along with his brother Needles moved inland and became the original settlers of Culpeper Co., VA. Russell was the great grandfather of the famous Civil War General Ambrose Poswell Hill. Warmest Regards, Bernie in Northern Virginia

John, I didn't have any problem retrieving your lists. Could you please explain more fully what type of problem others had so I don't make the same mistake? It seems that folks on the "flash.net" system were bounced because of something I did. I thought I had made the lists of Hills on the Alabama 1830 census short enough not to cause any problems. There were 116 names on the list and I broke it up into 3 seperate emails. To those who got the messages I apologize (about 5 people I think). Please let me know how small I need to make the messages so this doesn't happen again. To the listowner of Hill: did the messages look okay to you? Should I not send those anymore? So sorry to all who had problems :-( Barb
Dear List My group of HILL ancestors came from the Borders area in Scotland. They started their migration to the United States in about 1818. (My direct ancestor didn't come until a little later). They settled in St. Lawrence County, New York. Many of them were farmers. My direct immigrant is George Hill b. 1786 in Scotland. Came to the US after 1824. Married 1830 to Emily McRobbie b. 1803 in Scotland. Looking for descendants of their children! James, John, George, Thomas, Isabel, Robert, Andrew, David, Helen. (Boy, a lot of kids!) My direct is James, b. 1831 m. Cornelia Hand in 1860 in New York then went to St. Clair County Michigan where they stayed put. Thanks! Deanna Hill-Staley
I just obtained the death certificate for my great-great-grandfather, John F. Hill. He died on May 9, 1941 in Columbus, Ohio and was buried in Columbus in Union Cemetery on May 13, 1941. The recorded wife is Maybelle Hill, but the only wife of his that I ever knew of was Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Hill. Does this look familiar to anyone?? D. A. Blakemore

The Crest handed down to me reads: HILL As so often happens when surnames were adopted, The Hill family name was probably taken from their place of residents, in this case, those who lived on a hill. Long a prominant family in England, the Hill family has been held in high esteem since the time of Queen Elizabeth. One of the most noted members of the family was Sir Rowland Hill, an eminant merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1549. He was known for his many contributions to charities and public projects. One of the earliest settlers to come to America Bearing this name was William Hill who arrived in 1632. He first made his home in Massachussets and later moved to Connecticut. Branches of his family can be found throughout the United States and persons bearing his name are well represented in the arts and professions as well as in the world of business. Arms: Sable, on fess between three leopards passant quadrant or, spotted of the field, as many escallops gules. Crest: Sources consulted suggest that crest and supporters are usually by those claiming ancestry from royal line. Motto: Per Deum et ferrum obtinui ( By God and my sword I have obtained).
