hope all you Hill hunters will indulge me while I give you a short Bio of my great grandmother's brother. I would like to find at least one of his descendants to compare notes with. Although much was written about him, nothing was said about a wife or children. Let me know if this rings a bell with anyone. Thanks, Maryjozy@aol.com In a book called "A Land Of Sunshine" Flagstaff and its Surroundings by George H Tinker, Published in 1887 there is a fairly detailed account of Walter J. Hill. It says: "Walter J. Hill.----In a frontier county, while accustomed to find on every hand evidences of health and prosperity, we seldom expect to discover culture, refinement and elegance. A ranchman's home would be about the last place where it would be looked for, yet a visitor to the residence of Walter J. Hill, at Volunteer Springs, will find himself surrounded by all of the luxuries that make life enjoyable to a man of education and taste." "Walter J. Hill, who is only 33 years of age, is a native of the Green Mountain State, having been born at Montpelier, in Washington County, Vermont in the year 1854. About the close of the war, when a small boy only eleven years old, he set out alone from New England and made his way to Texas, where he got employment on a cattle range and was one of the first that ever drove cattle from there to Kansas over the Chisam trail, which was no joke in those days with hostile Indians on every hand throughout the whole route. Later he was employed to drive a bunch of cattle from Texas to Nevada, which was a still more perilous journey. After remaining in Nevada for some little time, he started---working for wages---and drove stock across the Mojave Desert into Arizona, up to the very place where he is now located and owner of the property. This was in 1876, and he was then only 22 years of age. There he has remained since, built up the splendid place here described, and is to-day the largest individual owner of sheep in Arizona. The story of such a life is as romantic as anything ever read of in a border novel. It must have been full of danger and hair-breadth escapes, but not the the "bad Man" order whose business is fighting. It is simply the story of a plucky Vermont boy, who, by determination, endurance and honest hard work, has accumulated a fortune and finds himself surrounded with all of the comforts and many luxuries of life before he has reached the prime of his manhood." This book also describes Hill's luxurious (Tinker called it commodious) home and all its accompanying structures as well as giving details of his wool production. Voting Registers show that Walter Hill was still in Flagstaff in 1894. Walter J. Hill is mentioned several times in a book called "They Came To The Mountain" written by Platt Cline. He was the one who said Walter lost his fortune and went to California. With all that information I was unable to find out if he was married and to whom. I obtained a California Death Certificate for a Walter J. Hill who died November 1, 1918 at age 62 in San Diego County- File #48333. The certificate had mostly "unknown" on it, so no proof that it is the one I was looking for. No parents name and no wife. It did say this man was born in Vermont in 1856, was an Iron Worker at the time of his death and was a widower. He died from "Locomotor Ataxia" and malnutrition. A Fred K. Wood was the informant. Walter was buried at Greenwood, San Diego on November 5, 1918. Undertaker was University Undertaking Parlor in San Diego.

Hi everyone, I am still trying to find out if anyone else has found a Russell Hill who was supposedly born in Kentucky and severed with Colonel Kitchen... I still have found no civil war records to show he was with him, and I have looked at several... Russell went with his brother after the war to Missouri and died there in 1899. I would like to know if anyone could guess his appox. year of birth with the above information, so I could try again looking in Kentucky under a birth year. Thanking all of you in advance. As a footnote to my previous post re: the Battle Creek Massacre, I just found that Navarro County was created from Robertson County in 1846. Therefore, John Ashley Hill who was killed in an Indian massacre in 1838, would indeed have died in Robertson Co. as earlier reported, but it would be known today as Navarro Co. It is sounding more and more as though this is the Hill who died in the Battle Creek massacre near Spring Hill, TX, and the relative (cousin, not brother) of Dr. George Washington Hill. Just to set the record straight, Dr. Geo. W. Hill, b. 1814 was the son of Henry John Alexander Hill and Polly Johnson of Warren Co., TN. John Ashley Hill, b. abt. 1808, was the son of Benjamin J. Hill and Rebecca Wallace also of TN. Henry John Alexander Hill and Benjamin J. Hill were brothers. ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com
In researching the above massacre of a surveying party in Navarro Co., TX, I have found several puzzling references I am trying to unravel. Briefly; Near the site of Dr. Geo. Washington Hill's place in Spring Hill, Navarro Co., TX, in Oct. of 1838 a group of men went out on a surveying party. There are several accounts on record, all vary slightly in the telling of the story. There were somewhere between 21 and 25 men ambushed by Kickapoo Indians (who understood what surveying of the land meant to their way of life)and all but seven were killed. Of the survivors, four were seriously wounded. Earlier today I posted a reference I found to Dr. George Washington Hill having lost a brother in this massacre. The brother was unnamed. I've reseached G.W. Hill's known brothers and can't find the connection. However, G. W. Hill had a cousin, John Ashley Hill, b. abt. 1808 who came from TN to Navarro Co., TX abt. 1837-38 with wife Lucinda Langston and two small sons, Benj. J. C. Hill, b. 1829 and Geo. W. Hill, b. 1830. John Ashley Hill died in Oct. of 1838, supposedly in an Indian massacre in or near Robertson Co., TX. which is above Navarro Co. in middle Texas. I have come across today another reference that piques my interest and adds to the mystery. "In 1843, Ethan Melton returned to Franklin, Texas to make a report to C. M. Winkler, the lawyer, on the Tidwell estate. While in Franklin he visited the widow, Mrs. James Hill. James Hill was a brother of George W. Hill who was appointed Indian Agent and who had a trading post located near Springhill. Records at the County Clerk's office show that Ethan Melton and Mrs. Lucinda Hill, a widow, were married on July 7, 1843, by E. L. Patten, Chief Justice of Robinson County. This marriage was witnessed by the widow's two sons." The reference to James Hill being the brother of George W. Hill does not appear to be accurate. There is no brother James that I have found, either full or half-brother, unless James was a nickname for one of them. I further believe that the James Hill referred to, was in fact, John Ashley Hill, husband of Lucinda who was widowed in 1838 and left with two young sons. Lucinda Langston Hill did marry Ethan Melton in 1843. When she died in 1845 she named her Dr. Geo. W. Hill as guardian for her two boys, and they are found in later census's living with Dr. Geo. W. Hill. I have also found a site that shows a picture of the monument erected to the memory of those men who died at Battle Creek in 1838. Only a handful of names are listed, none of which list any HILL, although the articles I've read said some of the men's names were not known. For those of you interested in this line of Hills here are the sites I've been looking at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txnavarr/markers.htm#Battle Creek Burial Ground http://www.rootsweb.com/~txnavarr/indians/battleck.htm I would be interested in your opinions on whether you think John Ashley Hill is the one who perished in this Oct. 1838 massacre or whether anyone has any more definitive information on his demise, or information on an actual brother of Dr. Geo. W. Hill who may have died in this battle by the name of James or any other name. In purusing the web site for Navarro Co., TX I came across the following excerpt which raised the question; which brother of Dr. G. W. Hill's was killed in the Indian massacre in 1838? I've looked at all his siblings (both full brothers and half-brothers, and the only one I can't account for is Andrew Jackson Hill, b. 1816. Does anyone know if this is the brother killed in the surveying party referred to below? "Trading Post of Dr. George Washington Hill (1814-1860) Dedicated frontier physician and public servant of the Republic of Texas. Born in Tennessee, Hill received his medical degree from Transylvania University. He came to Texas in 1836, where he was a surgeon for Fort Houston at the opening of his lifelong practice. In 1837 Hill became the medical censor for Milam County. Later that year, he moved to newly created Robertson County, where he married Miss Matilda Slaughter. He entered public office as Robertson County Representative in the Congress of the Republic, 1838-41 and 1842-43. (Dawson - Farm-Market 709, 2 miles north, at roadside park) In 1838 Hill was reported operating a trading post near here. His home, called Spring Hill became the first settlement in Navarro County. Later that year, however, it was connected with a tragedy. A few days after spending the night at Hill's place twenty-one surveyors (including Hill's brother) were virtually annihilated by several hundred Kickapoos. Hill was named Indian agent for the Republic in 1841, and in 1843 he became Secretary of War. After Texas joined the Union he served in the legislature. Throughout these years he continued to practice medicine, facing many dangers in order to render aid. In 1853 Hill County was named in his honor." from: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txnavarr/markers2.htm) Jackie ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com
Does anyone have any info on Samuel K. Hill who married a Harriet Shoemaker in Highland Co. Ohio? He was born about 1821. Thanks, Chas. CWatts5042@aol.com
I haven't posted in awhile so will try again for any new faces that might have info. I am STILL searching for Henry Hill, born Aug 1816 in TN, Nashville or surrounding area probably, both of his parents born in N.C. Henry left TN by 1850 and turns up in Virginia City/Gold Hill, Nevada in 1870. Married Ellen M. Flannery in NV in 1875 and had 5 children. Henry died in 1905 in Hawthorne, Esmeralda Co., NV and is buried there. Has anyone ever heard of this man? He only used the name Henry on all documents but possibly Henry was his middle name. My grandpaw is really quite illusive as we know nothing of his whereabouts for 54 years. Thanks for any kind of clue you may have. George Watson
Has anyone come up with information on Edgar Hill who emigrated from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia ( perhaps Musquodoboit) in the mid to late 1800's. There he was a store-keeper. His brother was Daniel hill of Buxport Maine. Edgar married Sarah Kent and they had three children Olin, Sadie and Everett. I have information on the Hills from that time to present following Olin's family but need to find out about the other children and the rest of Edgar's and Sarah's ancestors. Please let me know what you have. Thanks, Jack Hill
Hi - I recently posted a message to the list just suggesting that if you have the approximate dates and/or places in the county that it really helps...evidently I sounded as if I were a "know-it-all" and I apologize if I did. I haven't been doing this for very long, either, but I do know any dates or places really help. I wasn't scolding. Good luck in your research! Jan Hall

So many of you Hills are so lucky to be able to go back as far as the 1600's and 1700's in your family research. I can't really get past my grandfather. Mayby this time my posting will bring me some news. This is all I know: My grandfathers name was Howard Francis Hill. DOB 8-14-1899 in Berkeley, California, County of Alameda. He was in the Navy and Navy Reserves. His father is Edward Hill (no middle name) and his mother was Josephine Wilmowtt (I don't know if the spelling of her last name is correct.) He passed away in Portland, Oregon 9-4-1958. He was married to Laura Marion Hansen. They were married in Illinois and later moved out to California with their daughter Laura Marion Hill. I have found the name of Arthur Hill but I have no idea is he is a brother or uncle. Any information would be very helpful. Thank You, Karen
