Dear Mollie Thanks for the email message. I live in RANFONTEIN, on the West Rand. It is a gold mining town and is situated about 45 Kilometres west of Johannesburg. Was your husband involved in the construction of Sasol 11 and 111 at Secunda? I have never been there myself. Best wishes Cindy Binks cbinks@global.co.za

Hi Vanessa No, I do not know James Hill's Parents at this stage. I thought that I could apply for their marriage certificate through ONS in England but I have found out that all B/M/D/ entries for the Isle of Man (where James married) are held at Douglas, Isle of Man. I did fax them yesterday with my request for a copy of the marriage entry but I have not yet had a reply. I will let you know if I manage to find out anything. I live in South Africa so the process in applying and obtaining certificates is slow! Best wishes Cindy Binks cbinks@global.co.za
Hello Everyone- I just received some new information about my GGG Grandparents and their children. I wanted to share. Do I have any family out their yet? David was born in Warren County, Tennessee ... according to Martha, killed in Civil War [some discussion about whether the records have the correct name, John HILL listed as killed at Battle of Parkersville in July 1861] ... Martha was born in Virginia, went to Tennessee as a child ...David & Martha were married in 1830. Between 1837 & 1840, they settled in Missouri. After 1843 they moved to Texas, but on Oct 18, 1850, they were in Everett, Missouri when the census taker came. Children were: Nancy (b. 1832 in TN) m. John N. OSMAN; John W. (b.1836 in TN) m. Elizabeth J. PRIDDY; Malinda J. (b. 1837 in TN) m. Pleasant ROURKE; Permelia A. (b. 1837 in TN) m. (1) Daniel REAM (2) Jesse A. FOREMAN; Mary Elizabeth(b. 1840 in MO); Minerva Stanley (b. 1843 in MO, d. 1931) m. Peter F. JACKSON; Martha R. (b. Dec. 29, 1847 in TX) m. (1) John PRATHER (2) OWENS (3) MATTINGLY; Edward (b. July 29, 1849 in MO); David Adam (b. Feb 6, 1853 in MO) m. Mary E. & moved to Oklahoma near brother, John W. All of the above is new and below is an outline of what I have already. Edward and his wife had one child that I know of William Edward Hill b. 1881 in Oswego, Kansas. William Edward married Henrietta Briley b. 1890 in Van Buren, Arkansas. If anyone has any input or advice for me I am more than happy to hear it or maybe you might be family? We can be Sherlock and figure it out. Archibald A Hill married EDITH M JOHNSON in 1902 NSW and a son FRANK was born in 1903. Hope somebody can help me tracing any decendants of Archibald A Hill or the father and mother of JAMES HILL born about 1827. Cindy Binks
Thank You all, I actually just found the answer to my question and since I received quite a few responses, I am posting the answer. Here's the website: http://image.vtls.com/collections/help/PS.html Here's what it says: (This) relates to claims for compensation made by Virginia citizens for materials, supplies and personal services provided to the Virginia militia and the continental armed forces during the Revolutionary War. The Legislature, sitting in session between 4 May 1780 and 14 July 1780, passed "An act for procuring a supply of provisions and other necessaries for the use of the Army" [Hening 10:233-237]. This act, extended in other sessions, authorized the governor to appoint commissioners within each county to carry out the terms of the act. The commissioners issued receipts, or certificates, to individuals, OR THEIR AGENTS, for materials and services provided. The certificate included the name of the individual, the date, a description of the item and its value. The certificate and any other available documentation was presented to the county court during special sessions held between 1781 and 1783. Certificates were examined and authenticated by the courts, and the amount of compensation was determined. Information pertaining to claims that were approved was recorded by the court clerk in court booklets which were sent to the public service claims commissioners' office in Richmond. The local provision law commissioners and deputy commissaries also kept lists of the foodstuffs, animals and other provisions that were collected in each county. Two public service claims commissioners were appointed by the governor in 1783 to settle claims for reimbursement for materials and services provided. Individuals or their agents went to the commissioners' office in Richmond where they were issued a warrant based on information contained in the certificates and court booklets. These transactions were recorded in the commissioners' books. The information recorded included the number of claims involved in the transaction, the name of the individual, the amount of the claim and the materials or services provided. The individual or his agent then took the warrant to the state treasurer's office for payment. Debra Hill, Jacksonville, FL
