    1. [HILL-L] HILL's of Greene Co.,IL
    2. Does anyone have any connections to these HILL families? My grandfather was James Shadrack HILL b. Sept. 12, 1880 in Girard,Macoupin Co.,IL. to William HILL and Nora RUTHERFORD. They where married Dec, 11, 1878 in Jersey Co.,IL. William is listed as age 21, probably born in 1857. Nora is listed as being 18, probably born in 1860. Jersey Co.,IL., was formed from Greene Co.,IL. In the 1830 federal census these HILL families are listed for Greene Co.,IL. Certainly the 1840 census would be more helpful but I accessed the 1830 census from the Greene Co.,IL rootsweb site. These HILL's must be pretty well documented by someone. I am certain that these are my HILL ancestors but need your help in filling in the blanks. They all lived near each other. 3. Hi, There is William Micajah SNIDER in my maternal ancestry. He was born to Sarah Elizabeth 'Bettie' TERRELL b.02SEP1843, and Jacob Matthew SNIDER, b.01OCT1840, d.1921, in a cemetary in Van Burien. William Macajah has no dates or locations listed. He is one of 9 siblings, his older sister is Louisa (SNIDER) SWEASY b.26APR1865 d.08JAN1942 in Louisville, KY. (Louisa is my ggrandmother.) She is buried at Green's Chapel Cemetary, Nelson Co., KY. His next younger sister is Mildred SNIDER b.1869-70? born in Spencer county, KY. I know this is sketchy but in my experience it's better to find a tiny strand of information rather than a brick wall! Matthew SNIDER was married 5 times but all children were born to Sarah & Jacob. If you have anything that runs along those lines I'd like to share. It's snowing and hubby is getting the snow machines out. 1. [HILL-L] John Calhoun Hill
    2. Seeking info on John Calhoun Hill and his wife Martha Elizabeth Bugas Dozier (Also found listed as Elizabeth Brooks Hill on a UDC application). They moved from an unknown area of SC to Burke Co., Ga after 1860. He does not appear on the 1860 census indicating he was probably still in SC but moved here shortly after because he did join an 1863 inf. co. from Burke during the War Between the States. Later census records indicate he was born ca. 1836, this calculated by his age on the census return. He was a practicing physician. His children: Elizabeth, John Mary, Martha, and Leonard Dozier ..some born in SC the later at Burke Co., GA. Upon his death 8 Dec 1895 his obituary says his body was taken back to the land "of his nativity" but no names in SC listed. Don't know who his daughters married or if they are buried in Burke Co. *Note --Martha appears on the 1870 census but not the 1880 census indicating she had died in childhood. There is no grave for her in Burke that is marked nor is there and obit. that we can find. His son John was killed in a shoot out behind his store downtown in 1905 (his bro. L. Dozier came to his rescue and killed the men responsible by retalliating with shot gun fire..Dozier is the only of the 4 men who survived) and is buried in the Waynesboro, Magnolia cem. As is his younger son, L. Dozier. So far only the descendants of L. Dozier have been located in this county. None of the Hill men had wills probated in Burke Co, Ga. either. There is no other notation of Dr. Hill's death in Burke records other than a type of letter to the editor by close black persons to the doctor who expressed there sorrow at his passing and told how fair he was to all and how he would be missed. The Hill's owned a great deal of land in Burke, aquiring land that once was Drone Plantation and much other land around Gough and the vacinity as well as some city lots and other odds and end pieces in the county. Due to the connection to SC and his body being carried home, and his wealth I would guess he was an active property owner in SC as well. Whatever the reason for his move to Burke, he brought his wealth and lifestyle with him by all indications of the newspaper announcements and different couples that were married at his home.-Do not know if he was a Justice of the Peace. A newspaper announcement gives his sister as Mrs. E.L. Andrews (a widow from SC) who married a Mr. John Lite (age 71) at Dr. John C. Hills home with "SC" elegance, style, graciousness, and etc. then the couple left for their home in Florida. No other info has been uncovered locally. Is anyone searching for a lost Dr. John C. Hill? If so I have him!!! please contact me: acobb52442@aol.com. Thanks for any help you may offer. I am sorry this is rambling but I have tried to put in as much detail as I know. Angie Cobb, Burke Co., GA.

    1. [HILL-L] Micajah Hill- Maryland 1811
    2. Larry Hill
    3. Hello Hill researchers, I am trying to find my Micajah Hill who in 1811 was indentured in Frederick County, Maryland to a Lawrence Davis, a stonemason, by his mother Naomi Dell. He was born 24 Jul 1794 and was 16 in 1811. He was to be indentured until he was 21 years old. He was supposedly an orphan. By 1817 he was living in Knox County, Ohio somewhere around 1818 he married Barbara Halderman/Halterman/Haldeman d/o Christian Halterman and Barbara Shellhorn in Knox County. By 1828 he had moved to Bellville, Richland Co., Ohio.. In some of the censuses McKiah( as the family spelled it) stated that he was born in Maryland. There is really quite a mystery to this Hill. Where exactly was he was born? Why was his mother's name listed as being Naomi Dell, was she remarried? I have yet to find a marriage record for a Naomi Hill marrying a Dell. Would Naomi and McKiah have to be living in Frederick County to indenture him there? Can anybody give any clues on how to find McKiah? Thanks, Shelley Hill Indiana

I know very very little about her...she married a Henry HAWKINS and had children Samuel, James, Thomas, Margaret, David, Clara, Eliza and William Berry. 1. [HILL-L] James Calvin HILL, b. abt. 1835, TN
    2. I'm still trying to figure out who James Calvin HILL of Warren Co., TN is, and how/if he fits with the extended Hill family in that area. All I know of James Calvin Hill is that he was the second husband of Martha Alice Taylor (Cagle). Martha was b. abt. 1840 in Warren Co., TN according to the 1850 census. She was the widow of John David CAGLE whom she married Sept. 8, 1863. John D. Cagle died Feb. 1, 1869 in McMinnville, Warren Co., TN. Martha had remarried to James Calvin HILL by the 1880 census. (She is shown as single head of household in 1870 census with her three sons and 52 yr. old mother, Eliza TAYLOR) James is shown as age 27 in 1880, putting his birthyear at abt. 1852/1853. He was born in TN, and his parents are shown as having been born in TN. James Calvin Hill and Martha had one child together by 1880, Mary J. listed as 3 yr. old. I'm estimating James and Martha married abt. 1876. The Cagle stepchildren are also in the household; Andrew J. Cagle, age 15, Isaac E. J. Cagle, age 14 and Thomas J. Cagle, age 11. Does anyone know if or how James Calvin Hill fits into the large HILL family in Warren County, TN? I feel he is related to them in some fashion but haven't yet been able to make the connection. 1. [HILL-L] James Madison HILL, b. 1809 GA/moved to AL
    2. While searching for more information on James Madison HILL, b. May 15, 1809 in Jasper Co., GA, d. Sept. 8, 1880 in Chambers Co., AL, I had a couple of successful census lookups for him and his family in AL for 1850 and 1860. It added a small amount of information to what I already had so thought I'd share. (James was one of the sons of John J. Hill, b. 1785, and Sara Parham, b. 1790, and he was the brother of Sen. Benjamin Harvey Hill of GA) Chambers Co., AL is just across the state border from Troup Co., GA where John and Sara Hill settled and raised their large family. I was told by the lookup volunteer that James Madison kept a postal address in West Point, GA even though he lived in Chambers Co., AL. James Madison Hill first married an E. W. Peebles on Oct. 5, 1830, probably in GA. I have no information on his first wife nor information on any children they may have had. I am still searching for answers on this first marriage. E. (possibly Elizabeth?) W. Peebles could possibly be buried on the old John J. Hill property in Long Cane, Troup Co., GA, among those five unidentified graves there since she apparently died shortly before 1834. James Madison Hill remarried to Martha Ann Webb b. Nov. 1, 1816, in Troup Co., GA on March 23, 1834. He and Martha had nine children; the three oldest were born in GA, the last six in AL. Hill, abt. 1859 James Madison Hill was a Justice of the Peace and shows up as 2nd Bondsman on several marriages in the area. His daughter Susan Celestia married Leonidus S. MEANS on March 8, 1853, Chambers Co., AL (Mar lic volume 5, page 1) They were married by John W. Tilley (MG) James M. Hill was 2nd Bondsman and gave consent for the marriage. If anyone has any information on James Madison Hill's first marriage to E. W. Peebles I'd love to hear from you. I'm also interested in what became of his children with Martha Ann Webb. If anyone out there descends through him please write me. Eldest son, George, is no longer in the family household by 1860 (he would have been 24 and probably on his own) but is also not shown as a separate household in Chambers Co., AL. He may have sought his own fortune either back in GA or who knows where?
