    1. [HILL-L] New Jersey around 1753?
    2. Just had some research done in Jennings County, Indiana. This is as far back as I have - Thomas Hill, born around 1680. Lived and died in England. His son, Thomas, born in England in 1716 emigrated to American after the war between the French and the English. He settled in New Jersey. In 1753 he married Sarah Hamlin and in 1764 moved to Loudon County, VA. They had 16 children. One of their sons, Thomas, born in New Jersey March 17, 1763. When he was a child, his parents moved to Virginia, locating at Martinsville, Henry County. At the age of 19 Thomas Hill enlisted and served a three month's term in the war of the American Revolution. On October 26, 1786 he married Mary Stone. About the year 1788 or 1789, Thomas was converted and united with the Baptist Church and was licensed to preach. After a few years in Virginia, Thomas moved to East Tennessee. Here he resided about 4 years. In the fall of 1789 he moved to Kentucky, setttling near Somerset, Pulaski County. In March 1817 he moved to Indiana and settled on Coffee Creek, Jennings Co. In 1822 he organized the Coffee Creek Baptist Church. He died Monday May 22, 1848. One of their sons, was Thomas Hill who was born in East Tennessee, Sept 12, 1797. In his infancy his parents moved to Pulaski County Kentucky. In 1816 he came to Indiana with his father and friends. He returned to Kentucky and married Susan Buster on Feb. 27, 1817 and then settled on his farm in Indiana In 1823 he was licensed to preach. Susan Buster Hill died on Apr. 27, 1865. Thomas died on March 27, 1876. They are buried at the Coffee Creek cemetery in Jennings County. One of their daughters was Margaret Hill. She was born Feb 9, 1819 and died November 10, 1879. She married a cousin, Isaac Perry Hill (These are my great great grandparents). Her sister, Mary, married Isaac's brother John. There were eight other siblings, I have their names. Isaac and John moved with their wives and children to Burleson County, Texas around 1857. Does any of this connect with your HILLs?

    3. To all HILL subcribers, ref: any virus, etc. Just do not open anything that looks unlike the ordinary, and you will be just fine. Be aware of any file with a suffix that contains an extension of BAT., EXE. or ZIP. These files are always in the form of an "Attachment", and if opened can cause serious after effects. Otherwise, enjoy this group, and the net as a whole. There is no sense in anyone scaring the daylights out of anyone that is using the web as a source of information, as we all are. You should ignore, any E-mail that looks suspicious or questionable. Get on with your quest! Jonathan HILL Cato.

    1. [HILL-L] Re: Mississippi Hills: JOEL HILL (son of Jesse) of Yalobusha Co., Ms.
    2. Hi Rich, Thanks for responding. Yes, it does look like you and my wife are related. While I have not done any extensive research on this line yet, I got much of my information from a cousin of my wife, Ann Clark, who lives in Grenada, MS, not far from Yalobusha County. I have personally visited the grave sites of many of the family there. Pursuant to your request I will start with Jesse Hill and work toward the present with JOEL HILL as I understand it. Ann sent me the following information: I. Jesse Hill*, son of William Hill, Sr.*, whose will was probated in Edgefield County, SC, in 1820 mentioned the following children: Susannah Casey, Sallie Garrett, wife of Thomas Garrett, Willliam, John and Joel*. William, son of Jesse, was a Baptist minister and lived in Greewood, S.C. and married Susan Crews. John, son of Jesse, was Probate Judge of Edgefield County, and Joel Hill* died in Yalobusha County, MS in 1853. II. JOEL HILL*, son of Jesse, married first Frances Carpenter on March 12, 1829. After her death he married Emily Martin on December 20, 1833, the daughter of Thomas and Rebekea (sp?) Martin. Joel was born January 3, 1806 and died May 26, 1853. Frances Carpenter, daughter of Rubin Carpenter, was born January 3, 1806 (same as Joel Hill) and died September 12, 1832. Second wife, Emily Martin was born February 11, 1813 and died December 26, 1862. Deed dated April 30, 1840 from Joel Hill, President of Board of Police, Yalobusha County. Joel and wife, Frances Carpenter, had a daughter, Mary Ann, born December 26, 1829, who married Thomas Carroll. They also had a daughter Anity Elizabeth who married Wiley Stevens. (Grandson, Andrew Stevens, Durant, MS). Anity Elizabeth's second husband was Jim Blackburn and they had a daughter, Corinne (sp?). Joel Hill* and Emily Martin had: 1) Martha Hill, born March 17, 1834, died July 14, 1863, and married James Martin and had children, Aurelius, James and William. Martha's husband was her 1st cousin. 2) Mary Elizabeth Hill, born July 26, 1836. 3) Emaline Hill, born April 25, 1839, married Robert Jennings. 4) Sarah Jane Hill, born November 21, 1840, died November 15, 1923, married Samuel Gooch. Their children were Samuel A., William, Daniel, Thomas, Emily Buckner and Lissie Pittman. (Married last names??) 5) George McDuffin Hill, born April 30, 1842 and died July 4, 1910. (Note: This McDuffin name may be an allied line.) 6) John C. Calhoun Hill*, born January 7, 1844, married two Wilborne sisters. His first wife, Mary Wilborne, and he had one son who died small. Georgianne Wilborne, his second wife, was born April 30, 1859 and died November 4, 1939. They had the following children: John Leo, Andrew Jackson, Samuel Calhoun*, Stella (Mrs. Jack B. Martin), Mrs. George Westly Martin, Earl Wilborn, Andrew and Samuel. 7) Egbert Hill 8) Joshua J. Hill, borny July 29, 1851. 9) Louisa Hill, born November 24, 1853, who married Willam Dixan Priddy. 10) Joel P. Hill, born February, 1847, married December 23, 182, to Elizabeth Watkins Purdie. 11) Evaline Hill, born January 4, 1838, died February 12, 1918, married Joby or Jolly Martin in Yalobush County, Ms. * denotes ancestors of my wife, Patricia Ann Hill. [Also note this is not the first Joel in this supposed line. There was at least another Joel born 1763 who married Ann Watson , a twin of Joshua, and a son of William Hill, Sr. As stated before this information is not verified.] I have more information. I'll go through my filing cabinet and send you what I have. I have also copied some printed materials so if you will provide me with your address, I'll be happy to supply that also without charge. Thanks for getting back with me. I always appreciate getting any information I can on this family. With warm regards, Dockie Ollie L. 3. I hope everyone knows that most of these messages are hoaxes, there is no virus, and by sending these e-mails to everyone we know, WE become the virus. This is the insidious plan!!! When you get a message like this, check the following web site before you react by e-mailing everyone: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html Scroll down the page and you will see dozens of these virus hoaxes and their names and key words, including the so-called "Wobbler" and "California." Just be sensible, and if you don't see it on the evening news or in the papers, don't trust these virus scares that you get through e-mail. So now that I have become part of the virus, too, I will be quiet.
