    3. OK, so it's me again. I check my 'trash bin' and you are right. It was made to look like the Hill site. I goofed and I'm sorry. All's right with the world. 1. [HILL-L] Re:NO VIRUS ON HILL LIST then what do you call it?
    2. John & Marge Schulke
    3. I hate to tell you this, but you could be mistaken. I most definately had an attachment named BABY.EXE sent to me on the Hill list. I turn my computer on around 6:30 every morning; there it was. Would I lie? What reason do I have. I am well covered by virus corrections. I thought I was doing a favor to the list by telling what was happening to me! Next time, I will delete it and not say a word! 1. [HILL-L] Seasons Greeting
    2. We found this poem by Johann Pierce Long in the Genealogy Section of our library. Seasons Greeting Another year of climbing the family tree I've looked under the leaves and what did I see? You coming up when I am going down We compare notes as what we have found At times it's not much, just one name or two It's better than nothing, I know It's true Still we search on, through films and a book. Hoping that our family is in the next one we look. May next year be fruitful, our lost ones we find And soon that our family will be intertwined I ask Santa to send us to all the right places, To guide us and lead us and to see smiling faces May all of you find your lost pioneer I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    1. [HILL-L] URLs sent to the list (more Virus info)
    2. Hello again fellow subscribers: Just a word of caution. Anytime you receive a web page address (URL) printed in the text of a Rootsweb list message (or any genealogy email), this is usually a research location on the web that someone has referred you to. Though almost all of these locations on the web are safe (ie. County Records, Library of Congress, Surname sites, etc.), you should still exercise caution whenever you go to any website. Where you choose to go on the web is not something that this list or Rootsweb can control. As with all email and websites, PLEASE take the basic steps to protect yourself. Here are those basic guidelines that we should all know by now: -NEVER open an attachment you know nothing about and if in doubt, email the "sender" to make sure that they are actually trying to send you something. -ALWAYS update your virus software (i.e.. once a week is best) and ALWAYS scan any files before opening. For all the latest on viruses and word on some of the new ones mentioned on several Rootsweb lists today: Go to: <http://www.mcafee.com> Of particular interest is the information on the "Messagemates", "Baby" or "W32/NewApt" worm, which YOU CANNOT get from this list, and YOU CANNOT be infected with if you follow the most basic precautions that we have all been well-advised of for years. Have a safe holiday and a virus-free New Year! Byron Hill HILL List

Their daughter Rebecca Ann HILL md. widower Greenberry HANCE in Jefferson Co., TN c. 1847 and moved to MO. by 1850 with their children. See a "Randle Hill" on Early Tax Records of Eastern TN. 1. [HILL-L] NO VIRUS ON HILL LIST (From HILL Listowner)
    2. Attention all subscribers, There is NO SUCH THING as a virus being distributed by our HILL list. Please read below recent comments by Tim Pierce, administrator of all lists from Rootsweb.com, who has investigated recent similar claims. The HILL list is filtered and no attachments are allowed. Some recent viruses send themselves out to the addresses in your address book using an address it found there as the sender's address. So if you have the address of a list in your address book, the virus may use that to make it appear it came from the list. It does not actually come through RootsWeb, it only looks like it did. Below is what Tim Pierce recently had to say about possibly this or other similar viruses. Byron Hill HILL Listowner - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Hi, folks - We've had a lot of reports tonight about a virus being passed around on RootsWeb lists. I have looked into these reports and it does NOT appear that the viruses have actually been sent through our lists. I've included a semi-technical explanation of what I have been able to find out, for those of you who are curious. The only important message here is that RootsWeb's lists are NOT the source of recent virus reports. What seems to be happening is that the current flock of viruses do the following things when they infect a new computer: * The virus sends a copy of itself to everyone in the computer's address book; * It forges its own return address to look like it was sent by someone *else* in the address book; * and it uses the Subject line from a message that was recently sent from that machine. So if an infected person sent mail to BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com, the virus might send out mail like this to someone else in the victim's address book: From: BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com To: joe@example.com Subject: [BUMBLEROTTER] looking for Fred and Wilma Bumblerotter http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html Hypercool Happy New Year 2000 funny programs and animations... We attached our recent animation from this site in our mail ! Check it out ! Even though the mail never was sent to RootsWeb, the return address is forged to make it appear as if it came from us. I will continue to work on figuring out if there is anything that we can do about this; in the meantime, please assure any concerned subscribers that subscribing to a RootsWeb list is not dangerous. :-) -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb.com lead system adminstrator - ----------------------------- What can you do? Protect yourself by never opening an attachment from someone you do not know or that looks suspicious. Use a virus protection program. Know what viruses are out there so you will recognize one when if you get it. There are sites that will help you such as: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.stanford.edu/group/partners/hoaxes.shtml http://kumite.com/myths/ http://www.mcafee.com/centers/anti-virus/default2.asp and many others. Remember, if you do not open the attachment, you can not get infected with the virus. Delete it. Then empty the trash bin to make sure it is gone. If you are using an email program that stores attachments elsewhere on your computer, such as Eudora, find it there and delete it too.

    2. Someone on another list I am on received a message like this, opened it and it caused alot of problems for her. I was told not to open ANYTHING ending in .exe. I know this is not geneology related but I do not want anything to happen to the files we have worked so hard on. Her anti-virus program did not pick it up. Sincerely, Tammy H. Ratledge

    1. [HILL-L] Re: Archives and Manuscripts
    2. In a message dated 99-12-19 07:54:58 EST, you write: << Thanks for posting the site. Looks so interesting. I didn't see archives and manuscripts to look for bibles. Can you help me please? Thanks Joyce jhfirefly@aol >> Joyce: This takes you to the Home Page: http://leo.vsla.edu/archives/genie.html Click on DVB Editors' Index, takes you to: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ Click on Digital Library Program, takes you to: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm At this point, you're in high cotton. But if you want to go the last step for bibles, wills, etc, click on: Births, Deaths, Marriages, Wills, Bible Records which takes you to: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/bdmw/ This seems to be the search page for all the archives records request forms. But see hint below. And one more hint: every time I think I have mined this source completely, I find that I am wrong. For example, the Henley index of obituaries is incredible if you seek data about a person who died in Va. roughly 1780-1870. That source has let me find exact dates of death for several persons for whom I had only a date of probate. And copies of the obits seem to be available by mail. So, keep looking for new ways to search to be sure you get everything. And for those of you outside Virginia, seems that some of the records cross index to other states, for example, for family records of Virginians who migrated to Alabama. Let me know if you have any other problems.

    3. Wishing all Hill descendants a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Millennium! And very special greetings and best wishes to Byron Hill who has made this Hill list possible for us all. 1. [HILL-L] Library of Virgina: Hill Family
    2. For those of you who haven't found the Library of Virginia's Home Page, its a real gem. Almost worth paying taxes for. http://leo.vsla.edu/archives/genie.html Go to "Archives and Manuscripts" and search by title "Hill" Their collection lists 6 or 7 Hill family bibles. Each listing has an on-line catalog card that describes the particular family, usually with a geographical reference and cross reference to other families listed in each bible. Copies can be ordered by mail, a process that is slow (several weeks) but very effective. There are also copies of genealogical worksheets for the Hill Family. The person who has been searching for HENRY HILL will find a reference there. See Item 7 copied second below. 2. Hello, Alonzo knight was born est. 1816 in Vt. he died 1853 in Il. He was married to MARY HILL. In 1850 Census Alonzo and his children and mother were living in Fountain County In. His wife was not with him then. I would assume that she was dead by that time. The last child, that I am aware of ,from this marriage was born in 1832. I do not have a marriage location for this family, however, one of the children was born in Lower Waterford, Vt. Would anyone be able to help me with my MARY HILL? 2. My great-great-grandmother was Amanda Hill, who was from Concord township, and possibly born in, Champaign County about 1819. I believe I found the will of her father, Joseph Hill, Sr., in an LDS microfilm. He died about 1862. Her mother was unnamed in the will, but her siblings were listed as: Joseph, Jr. John F. James W. William O. Minerva (married James D. Powell) Julia Ann Idle? Sarah W. Fletcher Ruth Miller Margaret (married Robert Russell, Jr.) Amanda married Joseph McCoy, from Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in Madison County on November 22, 1842. Is there anyone that can make a connection or point me towards sources of information? Thanks, Susan Kappelman kappelsj@aol.com HILL, McCOY
