    1. [HILL-L] Alex Marshall HILL; 1828-1880+; Graves Co, KY
    2. Rob & Heather Williams
    3. Looking for anyone with information relative to Alex Marshall HILL. He was born about 1828 in Kentucky or Stewart County, TN. I find him listed on the 1870 census of Graves County, KY with the following family members: Wife: Nancy (WILFORD?), born about 1836, died/divorced before 1880 Charles, born about 1860 Tamerew E. "Fanny", born March 1862 Nancy E. F., born about 1863 Lula V., born about 1868 I then find Alex listed on the 1880 Graves County, KY census with a new wife and two more children: Wife: Louisa E., born about 1846 John R., born about 1872 Addie M. born July 1880 There is a marriage record in Graves County, KY for an M. HILL and Nancy WILFORD on 15 Dec 1855. Was this Alex and his first wife Nancy? This record indicates the groom was from Stewart County, TN. This has been a very tough nut to crack. PLEASE, isn't there anyone out there who can help me make a dent in this family? Where did they come from? Which HILL line did they descend from? What happened to the descendants of all these children? Please write me back if you have any information, or perhaps some time to maybe help me work on this. I am a college student with three small children, so my access to records is extremely limited. I have utterly exhausted my resources here. Take care, Rob Williams Ashland, Oregon

    3. Hello, I have noticed something lately, and thought I could make a suggestion, probably to more than one list..... Is it possible that we could be more aware that we will get much better response to our postings if we will be sure to list the place (i.e..GA, NC, VA, PA, OH, etc..) and the times (or an approximate...abt/c.. ..1800/10, etc) of our search? It would help to have it listed early in the posting. Of course it would be much better if we could put this in our Subject line: John Jones, NY>PA>IL>AR, c1850-1900, or: John Jones, AR; or even: Jones fam.1800's..PA. This will give us an area to expect the posting to involve. This is especially important in some lists...and very helpful to each other. When I see a heading that seems to be one I can help, I will pay special attention....otherwise, I have learned to "skim" and delete if I don't see the region or time frame quickly. I have had days when I get well over 500 messages...I'm very happy to share ideas and information-- including sources--with anyone who can use it; and I will always give my proof or tell if it's a "likely but not proven"; I also make note of certain names and times in the places I'm researching, and let that person know if I happen to see something I think might help their search. Many of us do the same thing, and I've had some long-standing puzzles solved by someone's generous help. I'm on several lists, and some of them are very large; sometimes it requires good detective work to find out which region of the country we are being asked about; often it just doesn't seem to be worth the effort. Lately I've noticed that I've had to read to the end of the message before I find a date or a region/state involved...these I just delete. Some messages seem to not have it at all...just a name! I realize I will probably be flamed terribly for this, but it seems to be getting worse and worse, so maybe it's worth it. I've been researching for 30 years, and I'm afraid e-mail has caused us to become a little careless in our quests. Remember please, some of our names (lists) are very large...where we are especially in need of trying to remember to do this. Hope we all have a happy and successful search, Doris MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

    2. Suzanne, I believe my Hills fell out of the sky also. Thomas W. Hill married Louisa Birch on 03-31-1834 in Pittsylvania County, VA. They had 9 children: James Osborne Hill, Alfred A. Hill (my g-g-grandfather), Richard Welden Hill, Henry Hamilton Hill, John Robert Hill, Betty Hill, Mary Hill, Virginia Hill and Missouri Hill. The only lead I have is that he may have come from Scotland. If anyone has any information on this family, it would be a great Christmas present. I have been at this wall for al very long time. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone on the Hill list! Sincerely, Tammy Hill Ratledge
