ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ar/randolph/cemetery/columbia.txt Columbia - Jarrett Cemetery and Church Located just off Highway 328W, about three miles west of Maynard is a concrete marker enclosed in a wrought iron fence which reads, " Site of Salem Church - Organized 1818 - the first Baptist Church constituted in Arkansas." On a hilltop just east of this site is the present day Columbia - Jarrett church building and cemetery. This church resulted form consolidation of two pioneer settlements, Columbia and Jarrett. This particular area has borne many names during its existence. The Columbia area supposedly was first known as Fourche de Maux and was named for a French trapper who was the first white man in the area. Other names by which it has been known are Fourche de Thomas, Foster and Lindseyville. Historians tell us the Columbia just may be the site of the first settlement in Randolph County. The Fletchers, Lindseys, Jarretts, Morrises and Davises and other families located there soon after 1800. Since early in the Nineteenth Century, the Columbia settlement has been popular and reflected its influence on the history of Randolph County. Being located on the Old Military Road, which traversed the county from Pitman's Ferry to Old Davidsonville, many historical figures of early American history journeyed though this part of the country. It's a possibility, really I don't know. We have little it anything to go on, except family legend. My grandfather told me we were Scotch Irish if there is such a thing. Until I turn it up I may never know. Just came across e-mail written Oct 30, 1997 by Elaine Vincent Kantor Thought you might be interested. "This is a fascinating article in THE VIRGINIAN PILOT newspaper (Norfold, VA Beach, Va area) regarding a Martha Hill known as "Aunt Pratt" whose family lived at Shirley Plantation in charles City Co. VA near Williamsburg in the 17th century. The article concerns a portrait of Martha Hill that hangs in the present day Shirley Plantation and the ghostly doings of Martha Hill's spirit. There is also some genealogical information which I can not vouvh for, but will list below. If you are connected with this family and would like a xerox copy of the article, let me know and I (Justin M. Kantor musical@pilot.inf.net) will take some copies. As far as I know, I'm not connected to these Hills so have no futher info other than what is in article. Section below is extracted in part and quoted in part from article. 1- Col. Edward Hill (bought land where plantation stands by 1653 2- ???(Edward Hill II. PRESUMABLY) 3-Edward Hill III (present manor house begun by him in 1723) 4-Martha (married an Englishman and thereafter lived in England) 4-Sarah (married an " " " " " " " ) 4- Elizabeth (inherited the estate) +John Carter (eldest son of Robert "King" Carter) 5- Charles Carter (inherited Shirley Plantation about 1770 Charles Carter had 2 wives and 23 children including Anne Hill Carter who became the second wife of Gov. Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee at Shirley in 1793. One of their children was Robert E. Lee. Today Shirley is both museum and working farm, operated by the 10th and 11the generations of the Hill-Carter Family. This plantation is open to the public at selected times. Please remember, I can't vouch for ht accuracy of this article; I just thought it might help someone." Marheinek@aol.com
It has been a while but I thought that I would again throw out my Hill line. Recent research in Ireland was a success but I am at a dead end on my US ties. My ggrandfather, Joseph Hill, came to the states around 1883-84. He settled into the New York city area and then moved late in life to Pittsburgh, Pa. He had sons, James, Dave and Joseph(Joe) by his first wife Anne Murphy(Ireland) and sons William,my grandfather, George and daughter Rachael by his second wife Jane McCoary(Ireland). I believe that Joe is buried in Brooklyn. I recently was informed that my ggandfathers brothers and other family members predeeded him to the states and that they migrated south. Up until this info, I have excluded Hills in the southern states...whoops. I have made extensive contacts in Ireland and would like to contact any Hills that may have family members from Monahan County, Ireland...Cornaso Parish. This Hill migration should have taken place between 1850 and 1885 and except for my grandfathers side, we have lost contact with the other members of the line. Hope this jogs some family memories....thanks, Bill
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you all. I was in Nebraska for 2 weeks as my grandmother was dying. Thank you all for your prayers. It takes too long to catch up at home after being gone. I will be answering those initial responses slowly but surely. My grandmother was Edith Marie (Stillinger) Lantz born July 5, 1904, daughter of Walter C. Stillinger and Edith Pearl Bell, granddaughter of George M. Bell and Louisa Alice Hill, g-granddaughter of Campbell M. Hill and Mary Ann Hulick, and gg-granddaughter of William Hill and Sarah Cotton. Thanks again Hill family for your prayers. Barbara Lantz Behringer Opelousas, LA
Dan, You wrote <<Looking for any information of the HILL family who lived in or around Poke, Georgia or Poke County Georgia area ca. 1850's - 1860's (+ or -).>> I'm pretty sure you mean Polk Co., GA which is in Northwest Georgia on the Alabama border. You might extend your search to the neighboring counties of Haralson, Paulding, Bartow, and Floyd in Georgia, and over the border in the Alabama counties of Cleburne and Calhoun. I've made some real breakthroughs in my research in the past by searching adjacent counties to the county where my ancestors were originally. At the time of the War of 1812 what is now western NY was Ohio. I hope someone knows when the Ohio-NY change occurred as it probably affects our searches in this area. I know nothing of Michegan's origination either. Good luck, Bob (Hill) Edhill2@aol.com wrote: > HELLO EVERYONE > I'M STILL LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON MY ANCESTORS. Need information re Jacob Hill, born circa 1782 in Pennsylvania and wife Catharine, born circa 1789 in Pennsylvania. Two family letters written in 1930 tell of Jacob and family moving from Lehigh County, Pennsylvania to Seneca County, Ohio in 1823 and to Kosciusko County, Indiana in 1839. Children are given as James, Charles, Rhuben, Daniel, William, Elizabeth, Christiana (Anna), and Melinda. I have verified family history starting with Federal Land Patent issued 24 April 1820 for land in Seneca County, Ohio and deed recorded 13 November 1823 on to Jacob's death on 15 September 1842 in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Jacob's will names his three daughters and sons Charles, Rhuben and William. Descendants for these six children are known in Kosciusko County. Problems being researched: 1. Place of birth of Jacob. Son Charles in 1880 Federal Census gives Pennsylvania as birth place of father and mother. 2. Place of birth and family name of Catharine. An elderly Hill descendent (now deceased) thought name was Catharine Block. Another Hill descendent (B. Eldora Priebe Crawford) published in 1979 a largely undocumented pedigree giving Jacob's wife as Catharine Rider. This was based on a Record of Birth and Baptism for James Hill, born 27 December 1806 in Whitehall Township, Northampton County (Lehigh County in 1812), Pennsylvania, son of Jacob Hill and Catharine Rider. Baptism witnessed by grandparents Frederic Hill and wife Mary. 3. Evidence that Jacob had a son James and that the above record is for his son. There was a James Hill in Seneca County and Kosciusko County but unable to definitely connect to Jacob. 4. Evidence that Jacob had a son Daniel. No documentation yet found for his existence. 5. Evidence that the Jacob Hill who moved to Seneca County is the Jacob Hill listed in 1820 Federal Census for S. Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (as is Frederick Hill) and is the father of James per 2. above. Any information re the early years of Jacob Hill and his ancestry will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob Weimer.

I just found a discrepancy in the birth date of Mary Elizabeth HILL(HILLS) who married John COPSEY of St.MARY'S CO MD. I originally had her birth date as 1793, but found the FRESCO book on Mrg&Deaths at my library. On page 361, she lists MARY COPSEY as age 80 upon death and says she was buried Jan14,1864 which would make her birth date about 1784. Then right above that, it lists John(Is he her son? or son of another wife of John,Sr.?or of another COPSEY?) as having celebrated his 93rd birthday before death in Jan 1892. That would place his birth at 1799--I had Dec 1811. Does anyone have any facts to determine which date is correct. Thanks. If John was born in 1799 (and "if" it is the same John as s/o John,Sr) then he may not have been her son--depending on which birthdate is correct. Thanks for any help. Bonnie mailto:gatreon@vnet.net
