    1. [HILL-L] Corrections to Asa Hill b. 1784 published data
    2. jackie bower
    3. While continuing to go over the data received from the Texas State Archives recently, I have been reading through the work of Luther Henry Hill on his (and my) ancestor, Asa Hill b. 1784 Edgecombe Co., NC, son of Isaac Hill, Sr. and Lucinda Wallace. I think his "Forward" is worth reproducing here as it corrects several errors regarding Asa Hill that continue to be perpetuated. Periodically new researchers need to be made aware of these errors in the hopes that one day most of the records and FTM files will be set straight. "Asa Hill of Fayette County Asa Hill of Rutersville (TX) has been confused with Abram Wiley Hill of Hill's Prairie in Bastrop County by some writers of Texas history. Dixon and Kemp, in their book "The Heroes of San Jacinto" published in 1932, first called him Abraham Webb "Asa" Hill. They state he was at the Battle of San Jacinto, but he was not. They identify him as the father of James Monroe Hill, but he was not. They also state that he was born in Georgia in 1815 and died in Bastrop Co. (TX) in 1884, which was not true. These are the correct dates for the birth and death of Abram Wiley Hill of Bastrop Co., who was a participant in the Battle of San Jacinto. They compounded the error on page 234, stating that James Monroe Hill was born in 1818 in Putnam Co., GA, which IS correct; this after previously saying that his father was born in 1815. These errors by Dixon and Kemp have been repeated by later writers, using their book as a source without further research, including but not limited to Worth S. Ray in "Austin Colony Pioneers" and in the "Handbook of Texas" published by The Texas State Historical Society Association in articles on James Monroe Hill and John Christopher Columbus Hill, sons of Asa Hill. A correction will be made in Volume 3 soon to be published." (my note: the corrections have since been made in the newest edition of The Handbook of Texas) If any of you have the erroneous information from any of these sources, please do make the necessary changes to set the record straight. Thank you. 1. Thanks!! Re: [HILL-L] Faith HILL -- Country Music Singer
    2. I just wanted to thank all of you for answering my question on Faith Hill. I suppose I should have looked closer at a bio on the internet. I have two daughters (13 and 20) who, being romantics, like country music, which of course is pretty much about love, family, lost love, "finding your truck keys after an evening of self-medication at the honky tonk". The latter quoted phrase is my paraphrase of some commentary I read in a "debate" over whether Alan Jackson's song "Where Were You" was too simplistic or not. Janet Hunter

    1. [HILL-L] 1901 letter by James Monroe Hill b. 1818
    2. jackie bower
    3. My transcription of the notes/letters by Lucy Amanda Hill Jones, daughter of James Monroe Hill, continues. This is the letter written by James Monroe Hill of Austin, TX in 1901 in response to the letter he received from his cousin Annie A. Hill Broach in Meridian, MS. (Her letter to him posted to the HILL list yesterday) "Austin, Texas Sept. 29, 1901 Mrs. Annie A. Broach Meridian, Miss. Dear Cousin: Your valued letter of 24th inst. has been received and was indeed a most pleasant surprise and it now affords me pleasure to reply, giving you what information I can concerning our Georgia relatives, and others. Since you have so kindly told me of yourself and your father's family, which I very greatly appreciate, I shall begin by making mention of my own family which consists, besides myself and wife, of three daughters and four sons. All of the latter, and their families, are living within one block of my home in this city, and have their business interests here also. One daughter - wife of Dr. W. F. Flewellen - lives in Belton, Texas. Another, our youngest child, wife of Judge H. G. McConnell, is living at present in Haskell, Texas. An unmarried daughter, who is at home with us, is endeavoring to give her mother and myself the needed care of our declining days; and is my present amanuensis. We have been married fifty-eight years this month and my girl, as I still call her, is as beautiful to me as she was when I led her to the marriage altar. Indeed it is frequently said by others, there isn't a move lovable old lady in Austin. She says that I am a better looking old man than I was when she married me. She desires to send you my photo, taken in August last. The health of both of us, considering our advanced age, is remarkably good, with the exception of my having had pneumonia in the early part of this year which left me quite feeble, and also weakened the optic nerves to the extent that I am now unable to see but very little, and therefore can not have the pleasure and satisfaction it would give me to write to you with my own hand. I have two living sisters and two brothers. My youngest brother, John C. C. Hill, now living in Monterey, Mexico, was captured in the Battle of Mier when a boy 14 years of age, and has spent most of his life living in the Republic of Mexico. His only daughter, Mrs. Dawe, a widow, has been living in Austin the past three years with her two young daughters who are attending school here as they desired to be educated in the English language. I mention this as they are making their home with us, we having turned over to them the spare rooms we had, in which to do light housekeeping. So you now know our entire household. Grandfather's name was Isaac Hill, but I can not reall Grandmother's given name. They had nine sons and I think, three daughters. I can not distinctly remember the names of the latter. Their sons names were: Benjamin, Isaac, Harry (note: this is Henry John Alexander), John, Allen, Asa, Larry, Whitman (note: this is Whitmell) and one more. (note: this would be Wright) (Also, there were five daughters; Elizabeth, MaryAnn, Lucinda "Lucy", Martha and Sarah) Grandfather lived in the little town of Hillsboro, Ga., which place was named for him, but earlier than I am able to remember he removed from Georgia to Tennessee and settled in the Cumberland Mountains, taking Uncle Benjamin and others of his family with him. I can recall when Uncle Ben would return sometimes with two of his brothers from Tennessee to Georgia with large droves of hogs and slaughter them at my father's home place three miles from Hillsboro. Uncle John (Benj. Harvey's father), then lived one and a half miles from Hillsboro where Ben and I attended the same Academy together and were chums. My father's name was Asa, and my mother's, before her marriage was Elizabeth Barksdale. I do not remember ever having seen my Uncle Allen Hill, your father, but know of him well, and of his fame as a Baptist minister. I was surprised to learn that your mother was a sister of Aunt Sally (Sarah "Sally" Parham Hill), cousin Ben Hill's mother, who was an intimate friend and associate of my mother. I have a copy of an old picture of her given me by her son, Isaac Lafayette Hill some years before his death, which I prize very highly. You ask the names of Benj. Harvey's parents. His father's name was John Hill and he married Miss Sarah Parham. Since you possibly do not have a copy of the "Life, Speeches and Writings" of Senator Benj. H. Hill of Georgia, written and compiled by his son, Benj. H. Hill, Jr., I will insert in this some copied extracts from the opening chapter concerning the early life of Cousin Ben. Aunt Mary Ann Tucker was the great aunt mentioned who helped defray his college expenses. My mother often talked of "Aunt Tucker", as she called her. At seventeen Benj. Harvey was ready for college, and he preferred the University of Georgia at Athens. To use his own language in giving an account of this period of his life to a friend: 'A family consultation was held. My mother insisted on my going. She had always had what was callled her patch, which was near the house, and was cultivated by her house servants when not needed at housework. This patch had always been my mother's pin money, amounting from $50 to $100. My mother said she would contribute this to my college expenses and would make my clothes at home besides. An old aunt of my mother's, who lived in a small house in my father's yard and had some means - small - and no children, agreed to contribute as much more. My father agreed to the balance, and I promised that all my college expenses of every kind should not exceed $300 per annum. I promised my mother I would take the first honor in my class. I redeemed this promise.' And thus these two noble women opened the door of opportunity to genius. They were repaid with love, honor and fame. I did not personally know your uncle Anderson Parham, but think it probable that his son may have been a classmate of my son, Dr. Homer B. Hill, in the New Orleans Medical College some years ago, as he spoke of having had a classmate there, a most excellent young man, by the name of F. W. Parham. I shall not close with the assurance I feel gratified that you made known to me our relationship through the medium of your letter. Appreciating the deep interest you have expressed, and with kindly greetings from my family and myself to your sister and yourself, and hoping to hear from you when convenient, I am Sincerely your cousin, James M. Hill 708 W. 19th St. Austin, Texas Dictated to his daughter Lucy Hill Jones. ------------------------------------------------------------- Note: There is a notation that no reply was ever received back from Annie Alzena Hill Broach. ______________________________________________________________ Get Your Free E-mail at http://www.prontomail.com

    1. [HILL-L] Notes of Lucy Amanda Hill b. 1855
    2. jackie bower
    3. (I spent an hour typing out some of the following, only to apparently lose the email to some sort of glitch earlier today. If for some reason, my earlier post did come through to any of you, please excuse this second post.) As promised, here is the first installment of some of the transcriptions of Lucy Amanda Hill b. March 25, 1855 TX, written in 1936. Lucy was the daughter of James Monroe Hill b. March 13, 1818 GA, and Jane Hallowell Kerr b. Oct. 28, 1824, granddaughter of Asa Hill b. 1784 NC and Elizabeth Barksdale b. 1795, and gr-granddaughter of Isaac Hill, Sr. b. 1748 and Lucinda Wallace b. 1746. Lucy acted as secretary for her father, James Monroe Hill, in his later years when his eyesight began to fail. She was also the "keeper of the family history" and corresponded with many relatives over the years, carefully keeping many of their letters which contain a good deal of firsthand family data. The following is a letter dated Sept. 24, 1901 written by Mrs. Annie Hill Broach of Meridian, MS, to James Monroe Hill in Austin, TX. It provided me with some new names and places I did not have in my data base before. "Meridian, Miss. Sept. 24, 1901 Mr. James Monroe Hill, Dear Sir and Cousin, A few days since a friend handed me a Cincinnati paper for perusal. When upon opening it how pleased was I to see your picture confronting me. For in a few moments I found you were my first cousin. Cousin Ben Harvey Hill of Georgia was my double first cousin, his parents and mine being brothers and sisters. My father was Allen Hill, a Baptist preacher. My mother was Miss Annie Parham, also of Georgia. Born to them were eleven children, all of whom have died except Ceylon S. Hill, now living in Okolona, Arkansas, and a sister older than myself. She is 68 years old. I am 63. Both of us widows. She has one son. I have no children. Her name is Martha Adelaide Williams. Mine is Annie Alzena Broach. Our mother having died while we were quite young, our father remarried in a short time and removed to Arkansas with his wife, a good woman, where he died several years since. So we have had no one to tell us of our Georgia relatives, as much as we desired to know. We are even ignorant of the first names of our grandparents. Sister thinks Grandfather Hill's name was Asa, but not sure. We would sometimes hear from Aunt Mary Turrentine, but since her death no one has written us. We feel entirely alone in this great big world, having no relatives near us. Will you kindly add to our pleasure by writing and telling us something of our Georgia kin? What was the name of Cousin Ben's father and mother? Also that of your parents? Did you know, or hear, of Aunt Mary Ann Tucker? I think she was my mother's own aunt on her mother's side. She was a wealthy maiden lady. I guess you knew my uncle Anderson Parham? I knew him, he having moved to Lafayette City, this State, but finally moved to Louisiana. As soon as I saw your picture I was impressed with the striking resemblence to a brother of mine who died in Ardmore, Indian Terr. three years ago. Oh, how we have longed, all these long years, to hear some one tell us of our kin in Georgia. Anything you will be kind enough to write us will add joy to our hearts. Trusting we will hear from you soon, I am sincerely, Your cousin (Mrs.) Annie A. Broach 11th St. & 28th Ave. Meridian, Miss. ------------------------------------------------------------------ James Madison Hill did respond just days later on Sept. 29, 1901. I will transcribe his lengthy letter in my next post which is also filled with much family data. Below is a portion of an article on the web about her: This 33-year-old diva has come a long way from Mississippi, where she was born on Sept. 21 to a single mother and subsequently adopted by factory worker Pat Perry and his wife Edna. Faith discovered music early in life, making her public debut at age 10 at a woman's club luncheon. After graduating from high school in 1986, she enrolled in junior college but was soon lured away by Nashville. Not exactly bursting onto the scene in "Music City," she held many jobs, from working as a receptionist to packaging merchandise for Reba McEntire's company. She had a short-lived marriage to music publisher Daniel Hill. Eventually, Faith landed a job as a backup singer and one fortuitous night in 1992, she was spotted by an executive from Warner Bros. Records. Her career was launched. Byron Hill
