This Hill, my gg grandfather, was a miller and the 9th mayor of Rochester, NY. He was originally from Bethleham, CT. I can't find much else about him. If you have any info please feel free to contact me. JRS
Hello Everyone, About a year ago I inherited my two aunt's personal papers, correspondence, genealogy files. I of course, went through the genealogy files quickly and found some correspondence 1941 from a V. Royt Hill of Birmingham Alabama to a third party regarding his Hill ancestors (seemingly not Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace) being cousins of Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. Since then I have not been successful in tracking this V. Royt Hill or descendants down. However, I am finally going through the mounds of other correspondence, and I found another similar letter from V. Royt Hill to a third party ("Charles and Elizabeth") of greater interest. It was apparently sent from one aunt to the other in the "regular" correspondence pile. There are several names in the following paragraph, and I and probably Jackie and others will wonder if anyone can identify them and their ancestry. In sum what we have is a JOAB HILL with a brother THOMAS. Joab is a great grandfather of V. ROYT HILL, writing in 1941. The brother Thomas has a son HENRY TAYLOR HILL, who according to his daughter MARY HILL BOX, for a while left home in TN and went into NC or GA and stayed with the father or grandfather of BEN HILL of Ga, who was a cousin or relative. The writer expresses the need for more verification, perhaps because it 'looks good" to claim a relationship with Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. Here is the paragraph, following some references to Senator Ben Hill and the book the Hills of Wilkes County, GA: "I had a letter from Mrs. Mary Hill Box, a grand daugghter of Thomas Hill. (He was a brother to my great grandfather Joab Hill.) In this letter she states that her father Henry Taylor Hill, when a young man left home and went into N.C. or Ga. from Tenn. and stayed for some time with a cousin or relative who was the father of or grandfather of Ben Hill of Ga. However, I want more verification than this." Regarding his possible skepticism of the claim of cousinhood. I can understand. All the while his children & grandchildren, frustrated by his silence on the matter, had been researching the ancestry of my illegit. Hugh Lawson White Hill, b. 1840 inWarren Co TN and had decided he was the son of HLW Hill, b. 1810 there...nevertheless whichever one of them was writing his obituary said he was the nephew of Civil War General A. P. Hill, who unless I am way off the mark, has no known relationship to the descendants of Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace that lived in Warren Co TN. Any thoughts? Best Regards, Janet Hunter

I have been reading some postings about DNA Testing. How exactly is it done? Do you know the cost of this procedure? Would we go to a lab and have it done? Also, exactly how would we use the results? My gggrandfather was John Hill, born in VA. I have not been able to find out anything about his parents, siblings, etc. So, any help would be so helpful in my genealogy work. However, I am looking at going back 4 generations to match a blood type, or whatever it is that we match. Would we all put in our results, and the matching ones would be relatives? I am just wondering how this would all work? I have looked for years to find any information, so if someone has figured this all out to work for us, I would certainly be wiling to do so. If anyone has this information, please let me know. Thanks, Victoria Sills Victoria Sills

This is to Byron Hill Pardon this approach, but my computer crashed recently losing all my addresses. I hope this will reach you Byron. I have read only sketchy info regarding the DNA effort that is under way as a result of my computer crash. Would you please give me some detail on what it takes to participate, as well as cost. You may remember that I have a 'brick wall', as many people do that, I've tried to climb for several years. Thanks Justin Hill

Hello fellow HILL listers: I just wanted to make everyone aware that a HILL family DNA project is well underway. Our main objective for participants in this project is to find DNA matches with one or more well-researched HILL lines not otherwise proven by traditional methods of research. To start the project, we selected living MALE participants from the following lines: Henry Truman HILL (NORTHERN BRANCH/Illinois) Henry Truman HILL (SOUTHERN BRANCH/Old Ninety-Six, SC) Robert HILL/Mary WEBB (Surry Co. VA) William HILL/Susannah SMITHERS (Surry Co. NC) Jonas Hill/Mary Barnes (NC > SC > TN) Henry HILL (brother of Jonas)/Sarah COX (NC > SC > TN) Isaac HILL, Sr./Lucinda Wallace (MD > NC > GA > TN > TX) William HILL/Hannah BRIDGES (NC > SC > GA) Wilkes Co. GA HILLs, aka Henry HILL/Mary HINTON Green B. HILL/Martha IVEY (VA > NC > SC > GA > AL > TX) Charles Hill/Temperance Webb Abel Hill/wife unknown Robert Hill/Martha Halbert Moses Hill of Fairfield SC Results from the test will begin to be posted in a few weeks. Participation in the test is open to ANY male HILL descendant of ANY Hill line. The more participants we have, the more we will all learn from this. If you are interested in participating, please contact Ray HILL ([email protected]), who is serving as our HILL DNA Project Administrator. Email to Ray your NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, and EMAIL ADDRESS. He will then order you a kit which will be promptly be sent to your home. The process involves an easy swabbing of the inside of the participant's mouth with the materials provided. The kit is then returned to the testing lab and you will be sent a confirmation email when it arrives. When the lab completes their analysis of your DNA, you will be notified of the results. If your code matches another participant in the project, each of you will be notified of the match, which we are hoping will lead to some new breakthroughs for some of us. The cost is $99 (+$2 shipping). Please contact Ray if you have any further questions. Byron Hill HILL-L Administrator
