    3. I noticed the comment about the relationship to A. P. Hill in these notes and had to smile. We were always told that we were related to the General also, but so far have found absolutely no way to connect to that line either. I think a lot of Hill families in the south were claiming him as "kin" without any proof. 3. Sorry Rhonda, No Nancy is listed as of 1880. Last child we have born for them is 1867. But that does not mean they could not have had one born after 1880. Also I believe there was a Hinton Hill family that seemed to follow the same route. We have not found a connection to them yet, but your Nancy may have come from them. 1. [HILL-L] Charles J. Hill and Descendents
    2. Julian Sloan
    3. Looking for information about Charles J. Hill, born in 1796 in Connecticut, possibly Bethleham. He moved to Rochester where he had a mill and was elected as a Democrat as the 9th mayor in 1841. He lived on Prince Street where he died in 1883. He was married to someone named Silvana and they had several children: Charles B., Weathy, Hannah and Emily. Emily married someone named Pierce (Edward, I think). Her daughter, (my grandmother), was named Blanche and she was married twice - to Harold Strebeigh and in 1914 to Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte. While married to her first, she had three children - Harold who didn't survive into adulthood and twins, Blanche and Barbara Strebeigh, who were born in Rye, NY in 1902. They lived in New York and summered in fashionable resorts like Newport and Southampton. If you recognize anything about any of the above individuals, please email me at the Hill site or to [email protected] Thanks. Julian Sloan

In presence of William X (his mark) Hill {Seal} Owen Rogers Georg W. Rogers John H. Rogers _______________________ RESEARCH NOTES by jcd: Other Marion County documents prove that John H. Rogers was a son of Mary Hill, widow of William Hill; that Mary was married first to a Rogers, then to Thomas Collins (died 1840), and after Collins' death to William Hill. Her maiden name remains unknown. (If anyone knows Mary's maiden name, or the name of the father of John H. Rogers, I would certainly appreciate the information. [email protected]) William Hill is proven by Hill family researchers to have been part of the Hill family of neighboring Robeson County. He was a son of James Hill and his wife Nancy, of Robeson. James Hill came to Robeson with several of his brothers - Slaughter, Moses, William, and Thomas Hill. They were sons of Thomas Hill who left will dated 1768 in Halifax County, NC. William Hill had land grant(s) c1800 on Ashpole Swamp between Lake View and Nichols. Census records seem to indicate that after his marriage to Mary he might have resided somewhere near Mullins, probably on lands that Mary had from her Collins or Rogers marriage. The "Bible record of David Page" shows that William Hill was born in 1782. That his first wife and mother of his children, was probably Elizabeth, daughter of David Page (born 1744) and his wife Sarah. Bible record also shows that David Page's parents were Abram Page and his wife Mary. (Bible record of David Page found in the Horry County Independent Republic Quarterly, Vol 17, Winter 1983 No.1, Page 8. This record has also been posted to the Horry County Historical Society webpage: http://www.hchsonline.org/bible/dp.html ) Of the children of William Hill: David Hill (b 1802) married 1/ Mary Grainger (sister of Joel) mar 2/Nancy (unk.). Nancy's death is the last entry in the David Page Bible record. She is buried at Bear Swamp Baptist Church (1822 - 1879). Sarah Hill (b 1804) married Joel Grainger, son of John Grainger & his wife Charity. It is from Joel and Sarah Hill Grainger that the Grainger family of Lake View descend. Betsey Hill (b 1812) married Barnabas Powell. (No further record.)

    1. [HILL-L] Ben Hill' cousins
    2. I am a member of the Dr. Green Hill line (1813-1892)-Martha Caldwell of Middleton, Logan County IL. The information I have on the family begins with William Hill-Susannah Smithers. It continues thru Daniel Hill-Martha Hickman, and then William Hickman Hill-Sally Brown. A newspaper clipping about a family reunion, published about 1896, states that Green Hill's "ancestors on his father's side coming from North Carolina and his maternal ancestors from Virginia. The late Hon. Benjamin Hill of Georgia belonged to another branch of the doctor's family." There is no mention of R.Royt Hill in the typescript I have of the family. Nor is there aconnection with Issac Hill-Lucinda Wallace. Maybe it was more wishful thinking. I am researching William Hill and Sally Brown an would be happy to hear from any one in this line. 3. Hello All, I've been going through a hardcover book I've had for some time but am now going back through it slowly and carefully to see if I can pick up additional information and clues. The book, "Austin Colony Pioneers" by Worth S. Ray, was first pub. in 1949, again in 1970 and more recently reprinted in 1995. The book includes histories of Bastrop, Fayette, Grimes, Montgomery and Washington Counties, Texas. On page 122 in the section for Washington Co., TX, there is the following mention of Rev. Noah Hill. "An account of the HILL Family of the Austin Colony would be incomplete without mention of Rev. Noah HILL, whose monument stands in the Prairie Lee cemetery at Brenham, with the inscription showing he was born in 1811 and died in 1867, which has been heretofore given. Although he died in Austin County, he was brought to Brenham, his home, and buried. His biographr in "Links" (vol. 1, p. 212) says that part of his boyhood was spent in North Carolina and part in Georgia, and that he married Miss J. C. Heefly, July 25, 1833. He was a student of Mercer University at old Penfield, in Greene Co., GA and came to Texas with his old friend and associate Elder Henry L. Graves, one time President of Baylor University at Old Independence. He was a Baptist minister and his last charge as a preacher was at Brenham, where he was buried. He preached also at Wharton, Matagorda, LaGrange, and various places in and contiguous to Austin's Colony. His wife died in 1887, and they left a number of children, whose names have not been identified. This writer is confident that Noah Hill was descended from the same family as that of the ISAAC HILL who is ancestor to the James Monroe Hill and Asa Hill heretofore mentioned in these notes." This last sentence caught my attention. As a researcher of the Isaac Hill, Sr. line and a direct descendant of Asa Hill, I am curious about this Noah Hill. I have never, ever seen the name "Noah" among this particular Hill line. What the author bases his confidence on concerning the connection between Isaac Hill and Noah Hill, other than similarities in location, is unknown to me. Does anyone know anything more of this Rev. Noah Hill? Any descendants out there who can clarify this? And has anyone seen this publication "Links" Vol. 1 to which reference is made? 1. Re: [HILL-L]DNA (Sen Benj Hill Cousins) Re: HILL-D Digest V02 #146
    2. Byron and everyone, I'm trying this once again. I very much appreciate the various comments on V. Royt Hill's research. The letters I have indicates he has questions about Hill ancestry, but perhaps between 1941 and his death he did more work with which I'm not familiar. My primary point was related to our discussions of DNA, and its implications.. It was that he had a letter written by someone else that suggested a group of Hills, not descendants of Isaac and Lucinda Wallace Hill, "said" they were related to Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. I thought that IF this other group of Hills (brothers Joab and Thomas, Thomas son Henry Taylor (possible contemporary of Sen Benj Harvey Hill), Henry's daughter Mary Hill Box) had a known/proven/documented satisfactorily ancestry back to NC (or VA) in the mid 1750s, then finding a descendant for a DNA test might help Isaac Hill descendants (or others) if there was a match (or even near match). My views on this remain the same. IS anyone on this list a part of the families of which V. Royt Hill was a member? Are they being tested. I know that one of the subscribers mentioned the ancestry, but it wasn't specific enough for me to figure out. Do they fit into any of the lines already being tested or at Byron's website, which I see is now being updated? I was in no way condoning V. Royt's Hill research, none of which I submitted to the list, nor do I really have. The letter I cited was not his, and he expressed his doubts about the linkage to Senator Hill, which I interpret to mean he wasn't sure whether the story was fueld by the desire to be linked to famous personages or not. Best Regards, Janet Hunter

He, his third wife, and his onlysurviving child then spent two years (1869 and 1870?) in Texas before goingback east, eventually settling in Mooresville, Limestone County, AL, in 1881.There he set up in joint medical practice with his son, Dr. James Abram Hill, child of his second wife, Ann Temperence Hall. Dr. James Abram Hill marriedSarah Elizabeth Woodroof, daughter of a local planter in Mooresville, Alabama. It is not certain that Dr. Henry Hill's time spent in Texas was in Bastrop, but it is highly likely. I would be delighted to find any information bearing on my great-grandfather's period in Memphis or in Texas--probably with one of his cousins in Bastrop, but possibly with other relatives, elsewhere in Texas. Thanks, Byron, Any suggestions? Al Hill

    3. R. Voyt Hill was a very old man when he died maybe 15 years ago. He & my aunt had corresponded extensively. He was researching the Thomas & Catherine Shropshire Hill family out of White Co, Tn. However, I never saw anything in their correspondence to tie this family with the Senator. I believe Joab is the brother of the above-named Thomas Hill, a Revolutionary Soldier. Be careful of the conclusions of R. Voyt; I've found conflicting documents more recently. 3. Hi there Janet The HILL surname is very popular and found all over the world. However with England being the starting point for family members to emigrate, I presume we can assume that ancestors with the surname originally originated from the UK, especially when we take the USA and South Africa into the equation. (I'm only mentioning USA and SA because of your connection plus my own) Elizabeth and Charles HILL is also a very popular parent's name it also seems, you asked for any thoughts so here are mine. The connection to the HILL family comes from South Africa. There are so many HILL families, one cannot seem to keep up. However, I'm posting what I have. You never know. You might just find a connection. I'm looking for James HILL. (B. 1801 D. 5 July 1877) He was the father of Isabella that married Frederick Waarde HENWICK. It seems that Isabella could have been a child from a 2nd marriage as she was born when James was ± 50 years old. Charles (B. 1779 D. 6/5/1856) Passenger list has him - B. 1782, but the death certificate has him dying at the age of 77. Elizabeth/Agnes (B. 17175) Elizabeth is on the passenger list but on death certificate it is Agnes. Children James (B. 1801 D. 5/7/1877) Passenger list has him - B. 1805, but death certificate has him dying at the age of 76. Jane (B. 1806) - No details. Elizabeth (B.1810) married Thomas MILLS (B. 1799) Dates not confirmed, but Elizabeth died at 99 years old. Charles (B. 1812) married Wilhelmina BARENDS (No birth details) Henry (B. 1812) married Clarissa Anne Seadon CROFT (B. 1818) The whole HILL family came out on the Sir George Osborn and disembarked in Algoa Bay, latter settling in the Albany District in and around Salem. I think that's why the HENWICK's were all under the impressions that they were from the 1820 Settler descent, which they weren't. 2. Ann, Thank you for the response. Unlike my aunts (:-), I thought his letter was cautious, saying he needed more verification for the stated connection in Mary Box Hill's letter. He sent a chart, including Isaac and Lucinda Wallace Hill's family, but it is basically the same that Jackie has if memory serves. 1. Re: [HILL-L] NC HILLS ??TN Cousin of Sen Benj. Harvey Hill of GA
    2. Jackie, Regarding your question repeated below, I cannot estimate ages other than to say that V. Royt Hill is probably in his 50s in 1941 because he sounds sort of avuncular and mentions unnamed adult children. There are only four letters from him and they are mostly chatty. They are from V. Royt Hill to what sounds like HIS Hill cousin, who met int he course of the day my Aunt Wilma in Louisiana and they started talking about Hill family genealogy generally. It doesn't sound like any cousinhood had been established. He is writing to "Charles and Elizabeth" because they wrote to him on behalf of my Aunt Wilma and Aunt Katheryne (who summered in Louisiana, while teaching in Virginia) MOST IMPORTANT, is that V. Royt Hill is NOT a descendant of Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace, but he mentions HIS earlier relatives as saying they have a relationship with Sen. Ben Harvey Hill's ancestors. That is why if anyone can recognize the Joab, Thomas, Henry Taylor Hill, Mary Hill Box I thought it might help us get a grip on Isaac Hill's ancestry. 3. Janet, The notes you have uncovered are very interesting and I would think bear looking into. Since your post I have gone over many of my own files and books, searching for any of the Hill names you mentioned that might fit but have come up empty. I have the book, "The Hills of Wilkes Co., GA" but cannot find the names Joab Hill or Henry Taylor Hill anywhere in the index. Still, as large and extended as Sen. Hill's family was, with various relatives living in GA, AL, TN, MO, AR and TX all at the same time, it is certainly conceivable that a cousin could have stayed with him or other Hill family members. There are many references to friends and family coming and going, neices and nephews boarding with aunts, uncles and grandparents at various times, sometimes for schooling and others just to visit for long periods. Since this Henry Taylor Hill supposedly came from TN as a young man, my suggestion would be to start digging in and around Warren Co., TN. As you know, Isaac Hill, Sr., his son Henry John Alexander Hill, and other sons and grandchildren were firmly settled in this area by 1816. I would look not only in McMinnville, Warren Co., TN, but also in some of the neighboring counties of Coffee, Grundy, Van Buren and White. (There are probably more but I'm not looking at my Atlas at the moment) Based on what you know (if anything)of the letter writers' ages, can you give us a rough estimate of the dates of birth for Joab Hill, his brother Thomas, the son Henry Taylor Hill and his daughter Mary Hill Box, as well as this V. Royt Hill? Henry Taylor Hill, if he stayed with Sen. B. H. Hill's family in GA must have lived aprox. during 1845-1882, since Sen. Hill was b. 1823, married in 1845 and died in 1882. If he stayed with Sen. Hill's father, John J. Hill, the latter lived 1745 to 1848 and married in 1806. This would make Henry Taylor Hill necessarily older if he stayed with the Senator's father. It isn't likely he stayed with Isaac Hill, Sr., the grandfather of Sen. B. H. Hill, because Isaac, after moving to TN in 1816, lived out the rest of his life in TN and died there in 1825. I did happen to find a 6 yr. old Joab Hill on the 1860 census for White Co., TN as follows: (However there is no brother Thomas, although perhaps Thomas was not yet born. I have no idea of the relationship of the James Broyles and Merril Wilson found in the same household) P185-39 HILL August 4, 1860 - District 12, Sparta PO 1300/1285 James A. 37 M W Farmer Tn Hulda 30 F W Tn Franklin C. 10 M W Tn Joab 6 M W Tn James M BROYLES 35 M W Farm Laborer Tn Merril WILSON 30 F (B) Boot & Show Ma This would put Joab Hill b. abt. 1854 and therefore not a likely candidate to be the father of the Henry Taylor Hill who left TN to live for a time with the Hills in GA. I mention this simply because there are a number of Hills in the counties bordering Warren Co., TN who may be related to the Isaac Hill, Sr. line in some fashion. My other thought on this, would be to pursue the unusual middle name of V. Royt Hill. The middle name may well be his mother's family name. Joab is also a name I've never seen in the Isaac Hill, Sr. line, but it could also come from his maternal side of the family. The names Henry, Thomas and Mary are of course found in this line, but are fairly common names overall. Thanks for sharing. It has given us some more food for thought. 3. I am looking for a MARY ANN HILL born about 1798 in Virginia. Married THOMAS C. HUTTON born about 1798 in Virginia. They were married about 1815 in Washington County, Virginia. I find a WALTER HILL in the 1810 Washington County, VA census. A BENJAMIN HILL & WALTER HILL in the 1820 Washington County, VA census. I find a BENJAMIN HILL in the 1830 Washington County, VA census. THOMAS C. HILL is also in the 1830 Washington County, VA census. I am trying to determine if MARY ANN HILL was related to BENJAMIN and or WALTER HILL. I would appreciate any information on the above people. Thank you, Judy Bisig
