Hello fellow listers: Many of you will be interested in knowing that some HILL DNA results are in and are posted on the website. Results from more participants are expected to be posted this week. This is a great project, and I would like to encourage each HILL line to get one of their living MALE descendants involved. Please feel free to go to the site and look around. I am looking for information on Gideon Hill who was born in New Hampshire around 1766. He resided in Ellsworth, Grafton, New Hampshire through the 1810-1850 census. He appears to have married twice - once in 1786 to Hannah Avery in Gilmanton, N,.H. and then to Patience? I think Gideon died in 1851 in Ellsworth and Hannah died 10 Aug 1818 in Ellsworth. Can anyone give me any information on this family? Gideon's date, place of birth, parents names? When did he marry Patience and what was her maiden name. I was told once that Gideon's father's name was Joseph Hill and that Joseph was a Rev. War Vet. Does anyone know anything about this? I sure would appreciate any information, this family has been a stone wall for several years now. Thank you for any clue you can give me. Brenda

I just received today a photocopy of part of the Summer 2002 edition of the Georgia Historical Society Newsmagazine, "Footnotes". Vol. 28, No. 2. On the cover is a portrait of Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. Inside on Page 5 is the following article: "HISTORIC PORTRAITS RESTORED The Georgia Historical Society has recently restored two significant portraits in its collection - Robert Toombs (1820-1885); GA Legislator, Congressman, Senator, Confederate general) and Benjamin Harvey Hill (1823-1882); GA legislator, Confederate & U.S. Congress, U.S. Senate), two of the most important political leaders in Georgia's history. The project was funded by an appropriation from the Georgia General Assembly in FY 2001 with the assistance of Sen. George Hooks of Americus. Toombs' portrait by John Maier was believed to have been painted in 1860 on the eve of the secession crisis when he was at the height of his power. Benjamin West Habersham's portrait captures Hill's "House of Our Fathers" Amnesty speech on January 11, 1876, in the U. S. House of Representatives. Alexander H. Stephens and John B. Gordon are among the figures in the background. Ted Nightwine of Nightwine and Associates in Sarasota, FL, performed the restoration, completed in May 2001, and both portraits are now available for public research. Plans call for these portraits to be on display in the Governors Suite at the Capitol later this year." There are photos of the "before", "during", and "after" stages of the portraits. It is a portrait I have not seen before of Sen. Hill and I hope to get to the Atlanta Capitol Bldg. again later this year to take my own photograph of the portrait. <[email protected]> Dear Ms Froglady I would love all your information. My ggrandmother Elizabeth Eliza Hill was married to William Dillard Cagle first then he died and she married James Ira Wells(my ancestor). I saved Reuben and Tabitha's information not because I have established a linkage but because I know there is a linkage. Do you know who their parents were? I can't find Elizabeths ancestry but I know it is tied in with these Cagles because they always are found together. Probably they came from Europe together or at least they were in the same church--some kind of Anabaptists for sure. I may have even gotten what I know about Reuben from you. The Cagles are easier to trace than the Hills. I think I will concentrate on them and then the Hills will emerge from their data. We are connected I am sure. When I find my ancestry, you will find yours-bet ya. I tried to send this message to you personally and not via the list but for some reason my computer kept rejecting the letter. Sincerely, Gabgolly ie Paulette Gallegly Buche in NM
