Dear List, I'll be posting the HILLs in AR, NC & TN in the federal census for 1850 (Still looking for my William S. HILL) There were some names listed in indexes that did not appear on the indicated page(s). They are not included. Hardin Co TN in particular was faulty in the index--part of the names were actually in Hardeman Co. I searched all of Hardin Co., but did not find a number of names. I did not proofread these, so I'm sure there are probably errors. Please go to the original if you have questions. Dana HILL 1850 Arkansas Federal Census--HILL ------ Each household consists of: County, township, enumerator, date---only one per household Page, dwelling, family, surname, first name, age, sex, race, occupation real estate, birthplace,married in year, school in year, cannot read or write, remarks---as many as there are people in each household ----- Nothing between commas means no entry for that column; there is an extra comma on the end; ignore. m=male or married in year f=female s=school in year r=cannot read or write *=one character I could not make out ?=more than one character or the entire entry illegible. [ ]=my notes, comments, etc. Birthplace is 2-character state names except in a few instances where the original was "Miss" which could have either been Missouri or Mississippi. My great grandmother was Missouri Louisa Hill (who married John "Jake" Edward Pope in Cherokee County, GA). Missouri's parents were Green Berry (or Greenberry) Hill and Liza/Elizabeth or Sara Millsaps. I believe that Jeremiah R. Hill and Rutha Payne Hill may be the parents of my g.g. grandfather. I found info. on the FamilySearch site on Jeremiah Hill and Rutha Payne Hill and it listed a Greenberry Hill as a son. I also found my Green Berry Hill living in Cherokee County, Georgia in the 1860 census with one house between him and Jeremiah Hill and Ruth Hill and an Elizabeth Payne (age 98 and prob. Rutha's mother) living with them. Have found a few possible links, but thought I'd try this list. Anyone familiar with any of this? What I do know... I too am looking for northern HILL relatives. I believe they came to Vermont from New Hampshire. It might have been Joshua and Sarah Hill, but this is just conjecture right now. My Charles L. HILL b1826 Waterbury, WA Co., VT married Martha J. PRESCOTT b1829 Vershire, Orange Co., VT and dca 1854. Children were: Alfred Eldorus, Frank and Ella. Charles married second to Frances Brown and had children: Sarah Almira, Albert W., George Prescott, Sylvia M.J., Charles LeRoy, Clarence Lorenzo (Ren), and Pride Earl. Family notes list the young family moving from Vermont about 1855, going to Wisconsin, then Nebraska, then Iowa. Apparently both Charles and Frances died when their youngest Pride Earl was quite small. He is listed as being adopted by a CROOKS family, I think taking that surname. I would like to encourage the participation of some northern HILL lines in our DNA study. Typically, the southern lines (often as a result of the Civil War) are suffering from a lack of documents, but bringing in some northern lines into the DNA study can help us all greatly. Between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, families followed Bounty Land rights and moved westward, some stayed in the north, and some went west via the south. DNA is already connecting some of these families that were long ago separated.
