    2. Margaret Duffus
    3. Henry George HILL is supposed to have been born about 1834, Bristol. His parents being John HILL & unknown HAYDN. Family stories abound that he fought in the Crimean under Garibaldi & that he had his own servants. Also that there is some connection that his wife was descended from the famous English PEEL family Henry George married Emily Sarah Eliza HAN(D)COCK(S) about 1863 in London. They emigrated to Australia in about 1884. Would love to hear from anyone that is connected. 1. [HILL-L] Bert Hill
    2. Bert Hill lived in NC, mostly in Johnston and Wake Co. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Cumberland Co. NC. I also have a 1st cousin once removed who has been searching way longer than I have, and she hasn't found anything either. I live in Johnston Co. , and still cannot come across anything to help. Of course, the old family legend is there, about him being a Native American (Cherokee), and formerly was named Red Cloud, and I am beginning to wonder if it is true. I have a book that which lists names of Native Americans who changed their names, but can't find him in that. I think he was like Mork and came on a space ship and got stuck, or maybe he was hatched.(LOL) I hope ya'll know I'm joking! My grandfather did have some brothers, but they are all dead, and all their sons are, too. My Dad deserted us when I was 5 mos old, and I never knew much at all about that part of my family. That is the reason I would like to know more about them. I didn't intend to write a book, so will stop now. I also didn't intend to ellicit sympathy, but I thought I would give some background so you all might see where I am coming from. Iris

    2. Hey Ya'll, Can anyone tell I'm from the south? Seriously, if I were a man, I would gladly participate in the testing. But alas, I am but a woman. My Father is dead and I don't have any brothers, and my Dad was an only son. My dilemma is that I can't find my great grandfather's parents or siblings. My ggrandfather was L.Burton/Elberton/Bert Hill b ca 1825-30. That's it. That is as far as I can go. Now that I have told my sad story (LOL), I will get off here. Test away, I wish I could. 1. [HILL-L] SOME STATISTICS ON DNA TESTING
    2. E. Ray Hill
    3. Hi Hill Subscribers, Not many people are aware of the extent to which DNA testing (as a supplement to genealogy research) is going on and has been going on for a number of years. I know of only one website that is making an effort to keep up with new developments in DNA testing relevant to family historians, and that is Chris Pomery who maintains a website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html. He says: "DNA testing is now establishing itself as the third, and newest, core source in the field of family history, supplementing knowledge gained from oral and documentary records. While the convergence of genetics & genealogy into a new science called 'genetic genealogy' is some way off, DNA tests by one-name groups in the UK and the USA are already revealing valuable and challenging results." He lists the following labs involved in the testing of Y-chromosome segments (DYS markers): (1) Oxford Ancestors: 26 surname groups registered, $190 fee for testing 10 DYS markers (2) Gene Tree: 3 surname groups registered, $225 fee per individual for testing 22 DYS markers (no group rate) (3) Relative Genetics & Ancestry: 22 surname groups registered, $195 fee for testing 22 DYS markers (4) Family Tree DNA: 133 surname groups registered, $169 fee for testing 25 DYS markers ($99 for 12) As you can see, the company used by our Hill DNA project (Family Tree DNA of Houston, TX), is not only has the best rates, but they test for more DYS markers. This company works with the lab at the University of Arizona to do its DNA testing and its reputation is impeccable. You can find more information on Family Tree DNA through the links provided on our website at www.livingston.net/hilldna. Also, there is plenty of information on our Hill DNA project. If you have run into a brick wall in searching for your elusive Hill ancestors, we invite you to join us in this unique approach to searching for our ancestors. E. Ray Hill, Project Coordinator Hill Surname DNA Project [email protected] www.livingston.net/hilldna PS. No one participating in our project is acquainted with or affiliated with the people at Family Tree DNA, the scientists at the University of Arizona, or any other testing lab, nor do any of us have any financial interest in any of these organizations. 100% of the costs for participating in this project have come out of our individual pockets, except for six participants who received financial assistance from another participant, who wishes to remain anonymous.

    2. Travis Hill
    3. Byron, I have a bit of insider knowledge of how hard you and Ray worked to get the HILL DNA study going and I'd like to say how much I appreciate the time and effort you've put in. I know Ray came up with this brilliant idea but I also know that you deserve much of the credit for getting it off the ground. Your many contacts, your many phone calls and your hard work to get the DNA study going are unknown to many on this HILL-List. Ray originated the study and has done a fabulous job as coordinator and without his efforts we would not be discussing HILL-DNA. Your support of the project gives instant credibility since the vast majority of long time HILL-List participants have a great deal of respect for your professionalism in the pursuit of HILL genealogy. I hope that the insidious invective of a recent poster is viewed as such by all. I participated in the study and learned more in seven weeks than I had previously learned in 20 years of research. Lest I be attacked also, the DNA study is not free nor is much else of worth in this world. 2. Are any DNA participants in family group 1 planning to do the final 13 markers of the 25 marker DNA test? I am in family group 1 and would like to do the remaining markers if enough partcipants in this group are doing it. I also send my thanks to Ray and Byron for all of the work they have done on this project.. It is a great tool for all of us Hill researchers to use in determining which Hill families are related. Thanks, John Eli Hill

    1. Re: [HILL-L] DNA success story
    2. I want to echo Travis Hill's comments about the value of the Hill DNA study and to add my thanks to Ray Hill and Byron for their efforts in putting all this together. We will never know the hours they have spent to accomplish what they have so far. And they have done this voluntarily, free of charge. The cost is in the lab analysis. Hill descendants everywhere are indebted to them and should welcome the opportunity to participate if they qualify. The value of the project will increase exponentially with the number participating. There are so many ripoffs going around, I suppose the skepticism of some is understandable. But this project ain't one of them. Charles Massey Chattanooga, TN
