Larry, My Phone Number: 1-910-259-8301 if you wish to discuss anything regarding this family of Hill's. Thanks Tincie Lee Meeks Shively [email protected]
Larry, My grandfather Wade Hampton Hill, born 1885 was said to have been born in Heard County, Ga. He married my grandmother Tincie Redden around early 1900's. His father James Madison Hill was in the 1900 census in Chambers, Lee Co., Ala.Tincie Redden was in Randolph Co., Ala. also Heard Co., Ga. James Madison Hill's father, Wade Hampton Hill, Sr.was born 1827 in Russell County, Ala. My father, Delmas Lee Meeks, deceased, was born 1925 just south of Rome, Ga. in Polk Co., Ga. in a small town of Argon across the line from Rome, Floyd Co., Ga. He married my mother Cynthia Hill, living, in probably Franklin Ga. One note: the granddaughter of the first son of James Madison Hill (his name was James Wesley Hill, born 1871, lives in Gainesville, Florida.) I have a postcard with the date of 1912 which was written by William Hershel Hill, born 1878 and his brother "Foney" Hill from Dallas, Texas where they had traveled to work. The postcard was addressed to James Madison Hill in Prattville, Autauga Co., Alabama the year of 1912. It would appear that he may have left there after 1912 and I think he may have died around 1915/1916 in Shelby Co., Ala. (have not verified it). He had a son named James Madison Hill born 1882 so I don't know if this is your James Hill who was in Rome, Ga. Could be though. If you want to go further back from Wade Hampton Hill, Sr. born 1827 his father was Sion Lassetter Hill who lived in Jones, Harris Co., Ga. 1830's then moved to Covington Co., Ala., 1860/65 church record, then on to Dale County Ala. where he is buried at Ozark, Dale Co. Ala. at the Union Church Cemetery with his wife Francis Dismukes Hill. Sion was born 1796 and he died 1871. If you have information to share on this family please let me know. Thanks Tincie Lee Meeks Shively [email protected]

For those of you that have hit a brick wall in searching for your Hill ancestors, I thought you might be interested in an article in this week's issue of Newsweek magazine (December 23, 2002). It has an interesting article on page 72, titled "DO-IT-YOURSELF DNA." It reads as follows "If you've tried and tried but your family tree is still just a seedling, mail-order DNA testing may be for you. Comparing your genetic profile with those of other genealogy buffs -- and potential relatives -- can provide new leads. For $149 and up, Family Tree DNA will give you a list of 25 markers (or genetic traits) you carry, based on a swab from the inside of your cheek..." It then mentions DNA research projects by other labs. Family Tree DNA (mentioned in the article), is the service that our Hill Surname DNA Project is using. However, we have a group discount rate that is much lower than the above fee. You are invited to join us in this most exciting alternative for searching for your elusive Hill ancestors. Please visit our website at: www.livingston.net/hilldna Merry Christmas and Happy New Year E. Ray Hill [email protected] PS. Just a personal note on what DNA testing has done for me. I started out over 30 years ago, knowing that my Gr Gr Grandfather was Perry Hill. All research pointed to Jonas Hill as his father, based on correlations of names, dates and places. However, I never found one shread of evidence to prove it. Fortunately, I had corresponded with various descendants of Jonas Hill for many years. When DNA testing emerged this past summer as a possibility, we decided to give it a try. As a result, my DNA matched two descendants of Jonas Hill...scientifically proving that the three of us had a common ancestor within the past seven generations. Based on our research, that common ancestor could have only been Jonas Hill. Now you know why I am sold on DNA testing. :-)
If there is anyone out there in Hill land that still believes that either William Hill/Susannah Smithers or William Hill/Elizabeth Halbert were the parents of Thomas Hill (1759-1849), they need to take a close look at Ray Hill's HILL SURNAME DNA PROJECT. Test Results DNA from the Thomas Hill descendant (#4345) is no match with the descendants of the William Hill/Smithers/Halbert line (Family Group 10). These results provide a good example of how DNA testing can lead to the correction of longstanding errors that have crept into genealogical records. I encourage other male descendants of this Thomas Hill or his male siblings (believed to be James (Nancy Royalty), Joab (Elizabeth Lane), John, and Jacob) to participate in the Hill DNA project. I will share in the cost.
Sorry, I still am not sure I understand how this works. Does the test have to be done from a male line all the way down? Or can a male descendant have it done, even if he goes back through the grandmother's side? To be more specific, my great-great grandfather was by Hill line. However, he had only 1 son who died in teh War Between the States, but he had many daughters. Therefore, any male cousin would have to have descended from one of his daughters. Thanks, Victoria Sills

ELIZA HILL married 01 March 1849 KENTON EVANS, in Barren County, KY. I believe the name KENTON was a phonetic spelling for CLINTON EVANS who was also known as HENRY CLINTON EVANS. Both were born in Kentucky, and later moved to Cooper County, MO. I'm hope to find a family connection for this couple. Any help would be appreciated. Betty Collier
