He was born c.1810 in New York. According to the 1850 census, he is living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He is family group 125, age 40, and a merchant. Living with him is his wife, Ellnor Boynton Palmer Hicks, their daughter, Charlotte (born c. 1842) and Ellnor’s brother, John Boynton Palmer, also a merchant. In 1860, John B. Palmer, his wife, and Charlotte Hicks, are living in Watauga County, North Carolina, and according to the census, Charlotte’s personal wealth is valued at $20,000(!), leading me to believe that both James A. Hicks and Ellnor Palmer Hicks are dead. The only other piece of information that I have is that James A. Hicks was one of the original subscribers to the Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit.
