I believe his first wife may be a daughter of Stephen ELLIS of Robertson Co. TN... I'm wondering if Whitmell HIGGS also may have gone by James HIGGS... James HIGGS was one of several (heirs of Stephen ELLIS) who signed a deed in Robertson Co. TN in August 1846, allowing Fletcher A. ELLIS to purchase the property located on Calebs Creek from the Stephen Ellis heirs. His wife would have been the heir, and also their children, and he may have signed for her (customary at that time), but she may also have been deceased by 1846. The only HIGGS family in the 1850 census of Robertson Co. TN was Whitmell Higgs (shown with children but no wife): 13th District - pages 115b and continued on pg. 116a Whitmell HIGGS, 46, male, Farmer, NC Thomas R. 19, male, TN Walter L., 14, male, TN Laura L., 11, female, TN Martha C., 9, female, TN Nancy E., age 5, female, TN ____________________________ There has been one other posting about this Higgs family in Robertson Co., TN and I tried e-mailing the person who left this post, on 3-22-03, but it was returned - Jim apparently doesn't have this e-mail address anymore..? He also admits that children of Whitmell Higgs may have been from a previous unknown wife... I have a strong suspicion that his full name "may" have been James Whitmell Higgs...? Also that his first wife was a daughter of Stephen Ellis (my ancestor).
