John Hicks, born in VA; died in Russell ?, VA?. He married 9. Elizabeth Brown 08/06/1790 in Montgomery, VA, USA. 9. Elizabeth Brown Notes for John Hicks: I believe this John Hicks to be the father of Charles Hicks, using land and tax records as "implied proof". This John Hicks was the right age, and I have eliminated the other adult Hicks living in Russell County. John Hicks and his son John, Jr. are both on the 1810 tax list of Russell County, VA. John bought land in Russell Co. in 1804, 1807, and 1816. John and Elizabeth sold land in 1807. John, Sr. sold land in 1815, 1816, and 1816. Russell County Deed Books: Book 4, Page 90 John Hicks and Elizabeth to Henry Kirk, 140 pounds, 50 acres. (Same land as Book 3, Page 549). John and Elizabeth both signed. Book 4, Page 96 John Cunnings transfers all rights and title to Philip Trout, John Davis, John Hicks, and Nathaniel Hicks on Little Cedar Creek for $200.00. Book 5, Page 204: John Hicks, Sr. to John Bates, $200.00, to acres on Little Cedar Creek.... Book 5, Page 384 John Hicks.....to John Bates, 50 pounds, 26 acres.....This tract conveyed to Hicks by Russell County at July term 1815 by Russell County..... John Hicks signed. Russell Co. Va: Will Book 5, Page 85 John Hicks, mortgage of Personal property to John C. Price. Other possible records: Marriage Bonds of Montgomery County, VA August 6, 1790 John Hicks to Elizabeth Brown, sur. John Addair, consent for Hicks to get a licence. Was signed by bride to be : Betty Brown (of age) 1788 Militia Military Vouchers: John Hicks, 2 horses, his apprentice was James Brown. There are numerous records of John Hicks. However, one must be careful in dealing with the "John Hicks" records from SW Virginia. More than one John Hicks existed. It is interesting to note that on the 1810 Tax List of Russell County the following: Nathaniel Hicks and Aluse Hicks (migrated to Floyd Co. KY, was a Christian minister, and died of typhoid fever in 1859) lived close to each other. James and John McKinney were listed the same day as Wm. Holliday. John Hicks, Jr. and Claiborn were listed on the same day. Then John Gibson and John Hicks were done on the same day. This lends more possibility that John was Charles father. Seeing that John Gibson was the father of Rebecca, it would follow true to form that Charles would marry a close neighbor. See Land Records under Charles Hicks also. More About John Hicks and Elizabeth Brown: Marriage: 08/06/1790, Montgomery, VA, USA Children of John Hicks and Elizabeth Brown are: i. Reuben Hicks, born in Russell, VA. 4 ii. Charles Hicks, born 1785 in Montgomery, VA, USA; died 08/23/1880 in Floyd, KY, USA; married Rebecca Gibson 1810 in IMPLIED, Russell, VA, USA. iii. Claibourn Hicks, born Abt. 1810 in Russell, VA, USA; died Bef. 1889 in Perry, KY, USA; married Vicey Saddler; born Abt. 1820 in Montgomery, VA. Notes for Claibourn Hicks: Claiborn was probably born about 1810 in Russell County, Virginia. He was not listed in the 1850 Ky Census Index, nor is he found in the Perry County 1850, KY Census Record. He apparently was living in KY in 1850 because his children were born in KY. 1860 Perry County, KY Census Record: NAME AGE SEX PLACE OF BIRTH HICKS, CLAIBOURN 50 M VA (Annotation shows him as a son of son of Charles and Rebecca) Vicey 40 F VA Harrison 18 M KY Jesse 16 M KY Bud 14 M KY Reuben 12 M KY John 10 M KY Rosanaah 8 F Ky (1-16-1852) Sarah 5 F KY Clab 7/12 M KY OMY, Sarah 18 F KY PERRY COUNTY BIRTHS: HIX, Clabourn/Sadler Lavida--Rosanna 1-16-1852 One Land Record: June 15, 1858 Perry County, KY Claibourne Hicks sold land in Perry Co., KY on Wiley's Fork of Ball's Fork of Troublesome Creek, Land was granted to Claiborne by Commonwealth patent, date August 28, 1854. Signed by: Claiborne Hicks Levicy (X) Hicks Little is known about Claiborn Hicks (known as "Fussy or Fussy Head"). Records of him have to researched carefully. An older "Claiborn Hicks"(probably an uncle or grandfather.) also moved to and lived in Perry County, KY. This older Claiborn also had a son named Claiborn. Land records have Claiborn, Sr. and Jr. Often a Jesse Hicks signing with them. My spectulation is that he was possibly the son of Jesse, and the grandson of of Perry County, KY. Search of the Perry, Lawrence, and Floyd County Court houses has failed to yield the marriage record of Claiborn and Levisy. They may have married in Russell County, VA where the marriage records were burned. Two of the sons served in the Civil War: Harrison and Jesse Several of the children ended up in McDowell County WV. Since I have not been able to establish an exact death record on Claibourn. I do not know if the following is for him or one of the other Claibourns. 1889 Tax Assessment of Knott County, KY: Real and Personal Hicks, Claiborne (precinct 9), 100 acres, 9 sheep, $71 personal, $171 personal and real, 0 males over 21, 3 children 6-20. If this is the right Claiborne, he may have been dead at this time as the records show "O males over 21). Letcher County, Ky has on it's 1843 Tax List: Claiborn Hicks and Jesse Hicks Additional Records: I believe that this is the same Claiborn Hicks with a second wife--found in the 1880 Lawrence Co., KY Census Records. They are living next door to his son Reubin R. Hicks. Hicks, Claiborn W M 74 Farmer VA NC PA Louisa W F 54 Keeping House KY KY KY Sarah M. W F 14 Daughter KY VA KY The places of birth would indicate that Sarah is the daughter of Louisa rather than that of Vicey Saddler. Based on an article in the June 2001 (Vol 16, Number 2) issue of Kentucky Explorer Magazine on an interview with a Jessie Hicks which was published by the Ashland Daily Independent in 1931, I (William E. Griffith Jr.) merged two individuals (Both named Jesse Hicks) in the PAF file created by my late wife Phyllis A. Coburn Griffith. This merging resulted in the linking of two Claibourn Hicks' and created a tie for the Claibourn who was the father of Reuben Radford Hicks and John Hicks of Russell County Va. Notes for Vicey Saddler: Reuben Radford's death certificate gives his parents names as Clabourn and Levisa Crabtree. Possibly her mother's last name was Crabtree, she was married prior to marrying Clabourn, or the information was given wrong. 10. John Gibson, Sr. He married 11. Alloaner (Gibson). 11. Alloaner (Gibson) Notes for John Gibson, Sr.: One researcher has his wife listed as Alloaner. Notes for Alloaner (Gibson): This name was found on another persons genealogy. There was no documentaion as to where it was found. It appears to be a form of Elleanor. Children of John Gibson and Alloaner (Gibson) are: i. John Gibson, Jr. 5 ii. Rebecca Gibson, born Abt. 1790 in Russell, VA, USA; died Abt. 1861 in Perry, KY, USA; married Charles Hicks 1810 in IMPLIED, Russell, VA, USA.
