Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Cei.2ACEB/145.2755.1.1.3.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have William Donaldson's middle name as Carroll, not Calvin. His wife is Elvina Hicks (not Elvinia; it's often misspelled in the census, etc.; her nickname was Viney), dau. of Elijah Hicks and Patience Bennett. William, Elvina, and her mother Patience are bur. in Little Hickory cem. in Fayette Co. IL (Patience Morris, as she apparently remarried an unk. Morris after Elijah Hicks died; the whereabouts of Patience from 1830 to 1870 are unknown to me). I have John T. Donaldson mar. Susan Cora Hicks 21 Apr 1853 Montgomery Co. IL (IL state mar. records online); she is dau. of Butler C. Hicks and Martha McPeak. I have her sister Nancy Elizabeth Hicks mar. Jackson Donaldson with this note: "his full name might be Andrew Jackson Donaldson; however, note a mar. John T. Donaldson to Elizabeth Hicks 5 Nov 1873 Fayette Co. IL, so perhaps John T. Donaldson mar. Eliz., sister of his 1st wife after latter's death (but may not be same John T. Donaldson or same Eliz.)". Perhaps John ! Donaldson's middle name is not Temple, or he has two middle names, which is not unusual. Otherwise, I have no idea who this Jackson Donaldson is, or who the parents of Elizabeth Hicks actually are. If you're close to Fayette Co., go to the library in Vandalia where there is much data on these families, or drive over to Fillmore in Montgomery Co. and talk to Audrey Probst (no computer). Elvina (Hicks) Donaldson had 2 known sisters - Elizabeth Hicks who mar. Lemuel Pope and res. Fayette Co. IL, and Martha Hicks who mar. Calvin J. Butler and res. first in Carroll Co. TN and then after about 1863 in Fayette Co. IL. Early census data for Elijah Hicks indicates more daughters than these 3 - possibly 6 - but their identities are not known to us. One possible dau. (not proven) is Nancy Hicks who mar. Wiley W. Butler 1837 in Carroll Co. TN and stayed there. Presley Garner Donaldson refers to Nancy (Hicks) Butler as "Aunt Nancy" in his monograph "Life and Times of P. G. Donaldson", reprints of which may still be available from the Fayette Co. Historical Soc. This is about all I know.

Hicks and Elizabeth McKensey mar. 1838 in Carroll Co. TN. Note following census data 1850 Carroll Co. TN, dist. 8, no. 1068 (p. 81B): Henry Hicks 32 SC, Elizabeth 31 SC, James H. 11 TN, Mary A. 9 TN, Sarah J. 7 TN, Martha C. 5 TN, Henry T. 3 TN, Tabitha E. 7/12 TN. I have the father Henry H. b. 28 Nov 1817 Union Co. SC and moved to Pulaski Co. AR by 1860 and d. 15 Nov 1881 in Saline Co. AR; he may have mar. 2nd Mary B. Jackson. There may be more data on Fam Tree Mkr WFT CD 2, tree no. 1286, but watch for errors in that data. There may also be more on this family on the Hicks Genforum. Henry H. Hicks' father may be either Henry or Barton Hicks; maybe someone has some proof one way or another. Barton Hicks is at no. 1053 same area 1850 census. There are many SC families in the 8th dist. of Carroll Co. TN in 1850; they are a separate group from the Hicks families in the 18th dist. on the east side of same county (Claibourn! Hicks and descendants). Someone has erroneously included Claibourn in the SC bunch, but he is born in NC and is a younger son of Littleberry Hicks who was from Montgomery Co. NC and then Hickman Co. TN. The NC Hicks families are associated with the many Butler families in the 18th dist. The SC Hicks families intermarried with the Kelly, Black, etc. families in the 8th dist.

IL? Some birthyears/states seem to match. In 1850, Montgomery Co. IL, SW part of district 22, no. 985: Hiram Hicks 30 NC, Mary 28 TN, James 10 TN, Syntha 8 TN, John 6 TN, Susan 6 TN (twin?), Fereby 2 IL, William 1 IL. From the adjacent families, which include several ancestors of mine, I would place this location in rural Fillmore township on the east side of Montgomery Co., not far from the Fayette Co. line. There were many Hicks families in western Fayette Co. IL; they came from Hickman Co. TN. Before that, they were in Montgomery Co. NC; some of the Hicks families in NC went up to Owen Co. IN rather than moving to TN. I don't know this Hiram's parents or any siblings. Note that the names Syntha (probably Cynthia, which among nearby families is often short for Vin Cynthia, which was my 2g-gmother's name) and Fereby (Fereba) are common among McCaslin families in the area.
