    3. The family of Samuel Hicks who was father of Andrew, Levi, Carroll and Patterson is listed on pages 180-182 in "The Hicks Family of Western North Carolina (Watauga River Lines)" by John Henry Hicks. My husband is descended from his son Andrew. It is said there that Samuel married Nancy Ward about 1827 or 1828, when he was age 28, but no source is given for this information. In addition to the four named sons, there are three daughters listed: Rachel (m. Henry Heatley); Diana (b. 1833 nfi); Nancy (m. Goulder Monroe Harmon). If there was another daughter (Celia), I'd be interested in learning more about her. Is her relationship to Samuel (II) Hicks referred to in Noah Johnson's pension record? If so, could you elaborate? If not, could you tell us what is the source for your information? If Celia was born about 1822, she would be several years older than Andrew, who was born ca 1829 and is listed by John Henry as the first child. It also would call into question John Henry's assertion that Samuel and Nancy were married "in 1827 or 1828". Nancy Ward, said to be a granddaughter of Ben Ward from McMinn County TN, was born maybe about 1803. Where birth or marriage records are not available, I'm guessing that some of John Henry's dates are, like mine, estimated - based on census records. Thanks for any clarification you can provide. I've been researching my family's lines for years and just FINALLY came acoss some info that we've been looking for. My Gr Gr Grandmother's (EJ Garrison, b. 24 Oct 1854) brother (John R Dunham - my Gr Gr Uncle, b. 09 Jan 1871) applied with the Eastern Cherokee (the 1909 Guion Miller Rolls, app #16191), however was rejected due to not having the info needed (why his mother / father / grandmother weren't on the Old Settlers Roll, etc). He states on his application that his Gr Grandmother was Annie Ross, a "half-blood Cherokee" of the "Ross Indians". He states that the Cherokee blood came from his mother's side of the family. Annie Ross was born approx 1790 in TN. I don't think she's John Ross' sister because my Annie married a Hatfield, not a Nave. Do you have ANY information, or possibly know where I could go to find out, about this Annie Ross? I've searched EVERYWHERE that I can think of to look. I thought perhaps she might be a cousin of John Ross. Her daughter was Comfort Hatfield Pitman (b. 1808 TN), who married Daniel Pitman. Comfort's daughter is Annie Mae Pitman Dunham (m. E! lijah Dunham), my Gr Gr Gr Grandmother, b. 28 Jul 1833 in TN. Annie Mae Pitman Dunham supposedly enrolled at Talequah in 1866, but John Dunham says their copies of the application / documents, unfortunately, burned in a fire. Do you think the Cherokee Nation in Talequah might have copies of this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many Wados - Donada gohvi, Jan Hicks wolfdnce@bellsouth.net

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cei.2ACEB/4154.1.1 Message Board Post: During the 1830's the so-called Five Civilized Tribes were forced by the administrations of Andrew Jackson & Martin Van Buren to abandon their homelands and move to the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The Choctaws removed first & encountered a cholera epidemic; The Chickasaws (a small tribe) removed without too much trouble; the Creeks (under Army guard) were removed later. The Seminoles went on the warpath, and about half of the tribe were captured by the Army & sent west in shackles. The Cherokees were the last to remove, and resisted by hiring lawyers. They won their case before the U.S. Supreme Court (Worcester v. Georgia), but Pres. Jackson defied the court and sent in troops under Gen. Winfield Scott. The term "Trail of Tears" seems to have been a Choctaw phrase, and was not used by Cherokees until the 20th century. At the time, both government & tribal leaders used the term "Removal" to describe the Federal policy. Some Cherokees voluntarily went west financed by the Government; some were forced at bayonet-point onto boats at Ross' Landing, TN (now Chattanooga) in the Spring of 1838, but most of the tribe migrated during the fall and winter of 1838-1839 under control of Chief John Ross and tribal leaders. I have found no evidence that Cherokees lost 4000 died (or one quarter of the tribe) durning the Removal (as textbooks say today), but lost about 1100 from all causes. The Cherokee Removal, in my opinion, was the easiest and least brutal of the five removals of southern Indian peoples.
