    1. This "John Ross" was NOT Chief John Ross.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cei.2ACEB/4277.1 Message Board Post: Terrie- The person signing those 1896/1902 Dawes statement as "John Ross" was NOT our beloved Chief John Ross who had died thirty YEARS before the Dawes Commission. Chief John Ross was elected Principal Chief in 1828 and served all through the Trail of Tears, until his DEATH 1 Aug 1866. THAT "John Ross" was no relation to our Chief and had simply "adopted" the name for political purposes while living with the Eastern Cherokees, and then came west to profit on the name during the Dawes enrollments. He was peddling his signature on the 1896 and 1898/1902 Dawes applications "testimonies" to any lawyer or individual who would pay his fee, - signing any statement that "might" get the applicant accepted; "I have known [---INSERT NAME HERE---] for [--- INSERT YEARS HERE---] and of my own personal knowledge, know that he is Cherokee". There was not one person on the Dawes Commission who didn't know that he was a fake- and not a very good one at that!! There were 17 other liars, - called "Standing Witnesses" because they stood outside of the Dawes Commission hearing rooms, waiting for someone to pay them to testify. Several of them were later indicted for perjury. There is no record of any Patsy (or Martha) Hicks as a member of the only Hicks family who were Cherokee tribal members at that time in history- Nathaniel's family. sorry-- Jerri (Rogers) Chasteen (a Hicks descendant) Cherokee Nation Claremore, OK

Have info on their children and willing to share and exchange data with anyone. Elijah's widow remarried Jos MABE and couple ended up in Tazewell County, Virginia so connections to Russell county is quite possible. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HICKS, YOUNG, CURTIS, ROE, FLOWERS, HOLMES, GILLESPIE, WATKINS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cei.2ACEB/4312 Message Board Post: To ALL: I'm interested in learning the maiden name of SARAH, wife of WILLIAM HICKS, Sr. of Anson County, North Carolina. Williams Hicks is the son of JOHN HICKS, Sr., Esq. (d. 1760) and wife OBEDIENCE (_____) HICKS of Anson County, NC. When she married William Hicks, SARAH was the widow of ISAM YOUNG, son of FRANCIS YOUNG and wife OBEDIENCE (________) YOUNG of South Carolina as shown in various land records. One these deeds records that in 1745 FRANCIS YOUNG was granted a tract of land on the Pee Dee River in Craven County, SC and that Francis died intestate and the land passed to his son ISAM YOUNG, who in turn also died intestate. According to the deed, the tract of land then passed to Isam's infant son, but the infant son also died shortly afterwards and the property then passed equally to FRANCIS YOUNG's four daughters, i.e.: MARY (YOUNG) GILLESPIE, wife of JAMES GILLESPIE; REBECCA (YOUNG) HOLMES, wife of EDWARD HOLMES; ESTER (YOUNG) YOUNG, wife of EDWARD YOUNG; and OBEDIENCE (YOUNG) FLOWERS, wife of JOHN FLOWERS. However, when OBEDIENCE and her husband JOHN FLOWERS sold their share of the land in 1765 it was stated to be free of claims EXCEPT for the right of dower held by ISAM's wife SARAH who had married WILLIAM HICKS. One source, unsubstantiated with written documentation, claimed Sarah was a "SARAH ROE" and another source, also unsubstantiated with written documentation, went further and claimed she was the daughter of a ROBERT ROE (d. 1756) and wife DOROTHY; BUT my investigation showed that the aforementioned ROBERT ROE who died in 1756 had two daughters, DOLLY (or Dorothy) ROE and ELIZABETH ROE, but I found NO evidence of a daughter named Sarah Roe.. WILLIAM HICKS and his wife SARAH are believed to have had at least four children: 1: SARAH HICKS (b. 14 Nov. 1757-12 Sept. 1810) who married SAMUEL CURTIS, Sr. (8 Jan. 1751-24 Jan 1846) 2. CHARLES HICKS who some sources show marrying SUSANNAH CURTIS, daughter of NATHANIEL CURTIS who was killed in the Revolution War in 1780 and brother of SAMUEL CURTIS named above.. 3. DANIEL HICKS (b. 1759) who married SARAH ______. [Daniel Hicks was wounded in the same battle in which Nathaniel Curtis was killed when their group of Whigs were ambushed as they were crossing the Pee Dee River by a band of Tories. 4. BENJAMIN HICKS William's father JOHN HICKS, SR. (d. 1760) arrived in the Anson area when the region was still a part of Bladen County, NC. When Anson County was formed in 1749/50, John Hicks, Sr. was appointed one of the county's original Justices. John Hicks is thought to be an elder brother of GEORGE HICKS, Sr., Gent. (1695-1762) of South Carolina and the son of "Capt. ROBERT HICKS "The Elder" (ca. 1658 - 1739) of Fort Christanna and Brunswick County, Virginia. Francis Young, father of Isam Young was a very prosperous land owner who had considerable property holdings in South Carolina and North Carolina. It is family tradition that SARAH (HICKS) CURTIS, daughter of WILLIAM and SARAH (____)YOUNG HICKS was a cousin of her husband SAMUEL CURTIS's 2nd wife, ELIZABETH W. (KENNON) ALSTON (1778 - Sept. 1852), the widow JOHN ALSTON [The latter of whom she had married 28 Jan 1797 in Orange County, North Carolina.] There are also claims by some researchers, again unsubstantiated with documentation, that the "W" initial in Elizabeth's name is for "WATKINS." [Samuel Curtis married his 2nd wife in Tennessee around 1812, about a year and half after his first wife Sarah's death in 1810.) I've been trying to "crack this nut" for about 30 years and would appreciate very much learning if someone else has had better success. THANKS --- JAY
