Hello everyone, It has been stated by members of a Cherokee Tribe that some names used on the Monacan Rolls are in fact Cherokee and not Monacan. I have looked at many documents in the last 6 months and I now ask that you review the names of these Monacan's. Questions to be asked are: Are these your Cherokee family names? Can you show any proof that they are Cherokee ? Do you want the Monacan to claim your familys heritage, if they are Cherokee and not Monacan? What are you willing to do about it? And most important: Are others so much in need of tribal status or a tribal card, that they believe you would allow them to use your family names, without proper and accurate geneology? The question has been put to me like this from some folks: So what if they were Cherokee ? Well I will let those of you out there who are Cherokee answer that question!!! On another note, I know of several names on this Monacan list that are in fact Cherokee. I have spoken to family members and the documentation will be provided to the BIA and folks in Washington whom have an interest in all of this. It was in my original opinion that these Monacan were actually Freedmen, and Melungeon and that this was a back door attempt to gain status as a tribe. My opinion has changed a little since a few months ago. I still believe that many were Freedmen. But I now believe that they were the UNREGISTERED FREEDMEN who never applied to the Goverment or the Bureau of Indian Affairs for benifits. I also believe that there are former slave owning family's who are also involved with Virginia getting state reconition for these folks. I also believe that there are "factions" of the Melungeon's at work with all of this as well. My work with checking the Monacan is by no means gonna be over any time soon. But for the time being, I only ask that you look at these names and if "you know" this info is incorrect, then do your part in making it correct. Think about this!! What would your ancesters say, if they were alive today and knew that their names were being used by folks living today wanting tribal reconition, with their CHEROKEE birthright? One of the census records listing Mattie and GW states that her parents were from MS, though I strongly suspect they could have just been passing through, rather than actually from there. Any ideas? He doens't ever speak much of his family, but he has said that he had six aunts, and every one had red hair. He says he was an only child, but my mother and I aren't sure we beleive him - he ran away when he was in his early teens. Do you have any information on perhaps a Robert Hicks (my grandfather, I believe) married to a May (or Mae) Peacock? We know that they lived in Oklahoma and California, and perhaps Nova Scotia. She was born May 6, 1923, to Leslie and Martha Roberts of Hannibal, Mo. As a young girl she moved with her family to Las Vegas, N.M. where she graduated from Las Vegas High School. She received her certificate in nursing after graduating from Colorado Training School for Nurses and serving her cadet period at Wadsworth General Hospital for Wounded Veterans and Denver General Hospital. She moved to Santa Monica, Calif. to complete her nurses training at Sawtelle Veterans Hospital while supporting the World War II war effort. It was during this period that she met her future husband Johnnie L. Hicks who was a baker in the US Navy. She was married Johnnie on Aug. 20, 1945 at the Santa Monica Distribution Center. After his discharge from the Navy, they moved to her home town of Las Vegas, N.M. to continue their lives and start a family together. Gloria, Johnnie and the oldest two of four ! children moved to Los Alamos in 1951, where he worked as a fireman and she stayed at home to raise her children. She eventually went back to work at the Los Alamos Medical Center where she worked for 15 years as a surgical floor nurse until her retirement. She then took a job with the State of New Mexico performing surveys of licensed nursing home facilities to insure quality care to the elderly. Tired of traveling and being away from home and family for extended periods, she quit to enjoy her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Martha Roberts and her two brothers, William and Richard Roberts. She is survived by her husband, Johnnie L. Hicks of Los Alamos; a daughter, Patricia Livingston of Midland, Texas; three sons, Larry and wife Jeanne of Arlington, Texas, Robert Hicks of St. Louis, Mo., and Tom and wife Lori of Pojoaque; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held a! t a future date.

Hi listers, greetings from Hicks in Melbourne Aust, mostly Melbourne. I've corresponded with some of you before- thanks so much to Nigel for the excellent explanation of the name derivation! John C was the son of Thomas Hicks of St Just (b 1804) and Mary Clemens, he married Grace Ellis (da William Ellis and Grace Dennis Jenkins). John C was a late Mine Manager in the goldfields at Ballarat (died 1890). There have been three generations of John Hicks born here in Aust.
