    3. There is a possibility that your Hicks family relates to mine. My Louisa Jane Hicks married Robert Brewer of Polk County, GA in 1871 in DeKalb County. Louisa's father was Jeremiah Hicks (Hix). The first I have of him is in the 1850 census where he was married with other children (William B. and James). A Cola Hix I believe to be his mother and a Mollie Hicks I believe to be his sister-in-law were in nearby homes. I can't find any of them in any 1860 census. By the 1870 DeKalb census Louisa, Robert and Caly were listed as children with a second wife (Nancy Pierce) whom he married in 1868 and had other children. I don't know where Elizabeth is buried. Jeremiah and Nancy are buried in the Wade Family cemetery in DeKalb County. Mollie Hicks had a son, also named Jeremiah (Jerry) who later moved to Alabama. I can find no further reference of William B. James was in the Civil War and died soon afterward. It is believed he is the JB Hix buried in the Stone Mountain Village cemetery. My speculation is that the first wife died during the birth of Caly. Jeremiah served in the Georgia Militia during the Civil War. Maybe the William B. in Paulding could possibly be the brother of my Louisa and the younger children were sent to live with him during the war. I don't have any other idea how Robert Brewer who lived his entire life in Polk County would have other wise met Louisa to marry her. Two years later the association was dissolved, and he came to Calhoun Co., Mich., where he passed two years working a farm on shares. In 1869 he went to Woodland, Barry Co., Mich., and rented a farm on which he lived two years. He went thence to Nashville, where he remained two years, engaged in blacksmithing. He was mustered out the second time June 22, 1865. The first marriage of Mr. Hicks occurred Aug. 24, 1860, when Amanda M. Downing became his wife. She was born April 25, 1840, and died Jan. 5, 1866, leaving two children, --- George A., born March 13, 1862, in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co., N. She was the daughter of Robert Hicks and Sarah Rives/Reeves. Her daughter Matilda Hicks Bell married Gabriel Tucker the son of Daniel Tucker of Elbert County, Georgia. Matilda was from North Carolina and she and Gabriel probably met and married when Daniel and Frances Tucker settled in NC for a while. Thomas Bell, Sarah's first husband was supposedly killed in the Revolutionary War. He was born in Scotland. Her second husband was Captain John Medearis. They had several children and eventually left North Carolina to settle on John's Revolutionary War land grant in what is now in Bedford County, Tennessee. He named the large plot of land Liberty Valley. Sarah died there in 1820.

The cemetery book states that she was the wife of Hiram Hix and I think she died in the late 1800s. I can look it up if you are interested, but I have no idea who she might be or who Hiram Hix might have been. I have some notes from my mother that this lady was called "Aunt Lizzie" but that's all. One mentions the estate of one Hiram HICKS, ca. 1881, wife Elizabeth, page 24, "Estate Records 1772-1935/Richmond Co.,NC" by Myrtle N. Bridges. The other lists Hiram HICKS as a Testator, ca. 1881, (Book 6, p. 224 from "North Carolina Wills: A Testator Index, 1665-1900" by Thornton W. Mitchell) and is all listed in Mrytle Bridges's "OUR NATIVE HEATH", page 275. This is the only time I have run across this name, so Richmond Co.,NC may be a good place to start looking. This Hiram may be a descendant of the same line your Hiram came from since names are repeated so often in a family. Richmond Co. was formed from early Anson Co.,NC in 1779. I have checked all of my early Anson Co.,NC books but do not see your Hiram. Sorry. Good luck. Joanne H.
