A message from our mailing lists host, Rootsweb, forewarning list administrators to keep their lists to genealogical topics in the face of upcoming world events. Please do continue to enjoy the use of these maillists and refrain from starting (or responding to) political commentary. Thank you! Barbara List Admin ===8<==============Original message text=============== Hi List admins, It is [a] period of intense political times when emotions and opinions will run high in many directions. The simple issue is that RootsWeb is for genealogical research and not for political discussions. Equivalent political situations have been known to cause significant disturbances and needed intervention by admins and occasionally by staff. RootsWeb asks all admins to reinforce where necessary to their subscribers the basis of the mailing lists and their provision by RootsWeb to users, and, where necessary, take reasonable actions to maintain the focus of mailing lists. Please be firm but nice. Good luck, we will all need it. RootsWeb cannot and will not be supportive of list administrators who encourage political discussions on mailing lists. ===8<===========End of original message text===========

Hi Friends, I'm pleased to announce a new list called First Ships. http://www.mdwsweb.com/genealogy-lists/firstshipslist.html From the description at the list home page: --- This list is for research and sharing of information on those people who came to New England on the first ships, their lives, why they came here, their ancestors and descendants wherever they may be, as well as those who married into these families. The ships include the Mayflower, the Fortune, the Anne and the Little James. There are many mailing lists focusing on the individual surnames of many of these people but this list brings them together so we can study them as a group, as family units, and as individuals. Feel free to create a database to share your information; use the files area to upload your gedcom or other genealogical or historical document; the photos area to display your ancestors connected with these lines or artwork relating to early colonial New England; and the links area to promote your favorite websites. And of course I encourage all to participate in the daily discussions. --- I'm very excited about the future of the FirstShips list and I expect it will be a great success. There are many discussion areas for Mayflower descendants and I felt there was a need for a list to discuss all the people of that group who first came to New England including those who came on The Fortune, The Anne and The Little James. Thus this list was created. Go to http://www.mdwsweb.com/genealogy-lists/firstshipslist.html for sign up information. Hi The info was from a genealogy record someone has on file at Ancestry.Com. I think they are Edward parents just that the dates are not correct. Sorry I should have caught the Rebecca young age. Dave
Thanks for the information. Just wondering where you obtained this info, since it appears from the dates you listed that the mother, Rebecca Clinton, would have been only twelve years old at the time of Edward's birth. Kristi Cox
Hi List Edward Hicks B Tn 1824 Father was W.R. Hicks b 1806 Nc and Rebecca Clinton B 1812 Tn. Hope this helps Later Dave Hicks
Sorry, I posted this to the wrong list. It was supposed to go to the "LAY" list. Kristi
I saw a posting from 2000 about the Lays of Whitley Co., KY, Jesse Lay, Hannah Lay, Elijah Lay and Jane Kitchen, and Jesse Lay and Elizabeth Perkins. I have posted several items on message boards in search of info about these families. I actually have several Lay lines on both sides of my family, and was wondering if anyone might be able to lead me to more information. Here is a brief synopsis of what I have: Catherine Lay married to Jesse Beams of Whitley Co., KY. Catherine was born abt. 1802 and died after 1860. That's all I have on her. They had a daughter named Michell (pronounced Micha according to family stories) born 1826 in Saxton, Whitley Co., KY, who married Edward Hicks, b. May, 1824 in TN. I also descend from Elijah Lay/Jane Kitchen through their son Jesse Lay/Elizabeth Perkins, through their daughter, Eliza Jane Lay/Jeremiah Smith, though their son, Peter Smith/Dexter Ruth Perry. Peter and Dexter are my grandparents. I also descend from a Celia Lay who married Berry Thompson in Campbell Co., TN. Their son, William Thompson married Crissie Lawson. Their daughter, Bessie married Robert Hicks, son of the Edward Hicks and Michell Beams referenced above. Can you help me with any info on the parents of Celia Lay, Catherine Lay, and figuring out the confusing line of Elijah and Jesse? I have been to the LFGA website, but without knowing the parentage of these individuals, I wasn't able to get much there. Thanks for any help you can give. Kristi (Smith) Cox Dayton, Ohio
I'm trying to locate an Edward Hicks born in Tennessee in May of 1824. Would be 16 y/o in the 1840 Census. Looking for his parents. Edward married Michell Beams of Whitley Co., KY, and they lived mostly in the Whitley Co. area. Edward is listed as born in TN, so I'm assuming it was probably Campbell Co. They had eight children, one of which was Jesse N. Hicks (b. May 13, 1855). Jesse N. Hicks married Sarah Eliza Chappell in Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co., KY. They had nine children, and from what I've been told, Jesse, Eliza, and most of their children (except my great-grandfather, Robert Lee Hicks) moved to Salem Co., Penns Grove, New Jersey. Robert Lee Hicks (b. Nov. 25, 1887 in Whitley Co., KY) married Bessie Thompson in June, 1906 in Campbell Co., TN. Would be interested in finding any cousins in NJ, and definitely the parentage of Edward Hicks of TN. Thanks, Kristi Cox Dayton, OH
