I am trying to trace my LENHART ancestors who, I believe, originated in Hesse-Darmstadt. I am having trouble tracing my paternal grandfather who is shown on his marriage certificate as HARRY LENHART born c1880/81,son of HARRY LENHART. Apart from this record, I can find no other trace of him in England (where the marriage took place), USA or Canada. I have found a Lenhart family living in London, England at the right time but I cannot link my grandfather to them. They seem to have been the only people in the country who bore that surname, spelt in that way.The head of this family was IGNAZ LENHART, a gun-maker, born in Hesse-Darmstadt c1833. His marriage certificate shows that his father was HEINRICH LENHART, a locksmith. IGNAZ came to England in 1855. The 1880 US census shows a HENRY LENHART, born in Hesse-Darmstadt c 1839. He was a "worker in safe works" in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. I think he may have been a brother of IGNAZ. I would think that similar skills are needed for all three jobs; i.e. locksmith, gun-maker and making safes, which suggests a family connection. If anyone knows anything about this family and HARRY LENHART, I would be delighted to hear from them.
