    3. I have recently found information on the emigration of my ancestors from Hesse. They had been living in Allenrod as late as 1834 when their youngest child was born. They subsequently (some of them) sailed from Antwerp on the Philadelphia and arrived in New York 20 September 1847. Why would a family travel all the way to Antwerp to emigrate? Would it be more likely that they had spent some time in Antwerp before deciding to go to America? Any thoughts are welcome.

    3. I have the same problem. Not only did Anton Reibold bring his family out by way of Antwerp, but GTA lists his place of origin as Hegnach. I know by U.S. census reports that this family is from Hessen-Darmstadt. My family left in 1846. I also know Anton's wife boarded with a three month year old, so I do not know whether they had to stop somewhere due to her pregnancy, but when I have looked at maps, they do appear to have taken a very strange route. I share this story because my family appeared to have done the same thing around the same period. I guess we need to find out what was going on around that time. 3. My great grandmother and her mother from Westfalen emigrated through Antwerp traveling with the agent Steinman and Co in late 1857. Does anyone know where the Steinman Co. records can be found? I have been unable to find them listed on various ship list sites and books; also unable to find any mention of Steinman and Co.
