Hi Brian You mention searching for old German Passports. Maybe you have been advised by LDS by now but, if not, have a look at the LDS catalogue and in "keyword search" type in "Reisepasse-Protokolle - 1851-1929 and check the film notes. You will find the numbers of films which you can order from LDS. These are copies of applications for passports which include place of birth, age, occupation or profession, physical description, and various other information (in German). I have looked at some for 1855/56 and was most interested to find the signature of the applicants. Hope this may help your search.
