My ancestor spelled his last name Mechlenburg, many times it is spelled Mecklenburg. Besides the "ch" sounding like a "k", is their a reason for the different spellings. The story is that my ancestor was an illegitimate son of a Duke. Could this be a reason. I have searched to find a reason but have found nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Kathleen
a) "ch" is not sounding like a "k" in German b) his name was most likely just Mechlenburg and he was one of the many "illegitimates", which have existed. In this case, the similarity of the names might have been the reason for an unjustified claim.
