    1. Hesse - Schneider family to US in 1844/1846
    2. Lawrence County Archives
    3. I am searching for several SCHNEIDER family members (sometimes spelled SNYDER in the census). They came from Hesse-Darmstadt between 1844 and 1846 to Baltimore, MD. Margaret, b. 1800, and three of her children - John b. abt. 1831-1834; George b. 1837; Margaret b. abt. 1842 are in the 1850 Baltimore City census. The husband of Margaret SCHNEIDER age 50, and father of the above children, is not known. He may have died before they came to America or shortly after arriving. Also in Baltimore is Margaret's oldest daughter, Elizabeth SCHNEIDER BOSSE b. abt. 1830, who is married to Benjamin BOSSE, BOSE, BOESE, etc., b. abt. 1818 (spelled BUSH in this census). Children were Barbara b. 1850; John b. abt. 1852; Margaret (Maggie?) b. abt. 1854; Elizabeth b. abt. 1856; Francis (Frank) b. abt. 1862; Benjamin b. about 1863; Annie b. abt. 1874. This family migrated to Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN and remained there. By 1860, Margaret SCHNEIDER age 60 is living in Clifton, Greene Co., OH with one son, George age 23, still at home. Living in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH is her son John SCHNEIDER, who has married Mary ZIGLER (ZEIGLER/ZIELGER) b. abt. 1834-1836, and their daughters Mary Eliza b. abt. 1856 and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. about 1859. Other children listed in later census are Kate b. abt. 1851; John b. abt. 1864; George b. abt. 1866; Henry b. abt. 1868; Joseph b. abt. 1869; and Cora b. abt. 1878. This family remained in Dayton, OH. In 1870, George SCHNEIDER b. 1837 is living in Allen, Noble Co., IN, and has married Mary DOSCH (DASCH/DOSH/DUSCH, etc.) b. 25 Feb. 1844. Children were Mary Ann b. 1 Jan. 1865; Godfried b. abt. 1866-1867; John Aloysius b. 17 Sept. 1873; Joseph Peter b. 12 Dec. 1878; Anna Theresa b. 17 Sept. 1882; unnamed infant b. abt. 1883-1884. I believe the parents of Mary DOSCH are John P. and Mary Ann DOSCH since she is listed in their household in 1860 and they live next door to her in 1870. By 1871, George SCHNEIDER and wife Mary Ann had moved onto Lawrence Co., TN with the huge German migration that took place between 1870 and 1890's. In the 1880 census of Lawrence Co., TN, his mother Margaret age 80 is living with them, which makes me wonder even more why I could not find her in 1870. I have been unable to find anything on Margaret b. abt. 1842. I did find a Margaret the right age married to a Christian/Christene BUCHLER age 32 living in St. Mary's, Auglaize Co., OH, in 1870, but can not be sure if this is my Margaret, even though the age is close and the last name is correct. They have children: Alvin age 6; Irnie or Jamie age 4 (census hard to read); Lillie age 2; and Harvey age 4 mos. I have not been able to find her in any other census. I have not been able to find a marriage record for any of the children of Margaret Schneider - John, George, Elizabeth, or Margaret. I would really love to know this. I would also like death info, exactly when they arrived in Baltimore, and to get in touch with any living descendants to share info with them. If I can find when they arrived, I can determine who the father was or if he died before coming to America. I have gone through a lot of passenger lists for the port of Baltimore from 1839-1850 with no luck. Most important, I would like to know where in Hesse-Darmstadt they lived, parents, dates, church attended, etc., as far back as I can go. If anyone on this list has information on this SCHNEIDER family and/or the families they married into, please answer via the list or contact me at lcarchives@lorettotel.net. I am very willing to share info. Thanks Kathy
