Have you tried the 1891/1901 Census (assuming that he was still alive)? - sometimes more information is given on later census records. Did he ever become naturalized British? If he did there will be some information held at KEW - you could check their records on line. Have you heard of the Anglo-German Family History Society? It is worth considering joining.
