Dear Listers: I'm researching the origin of Conrad Becker, supposedly of Grosen-Buseck, Hesse-Darmstadt. From good authority in genealogy there, we have been given what they believe to be true. The ages, and arrival times match very well. Our dilema is on Conrad's marriage record in Ontario, Canada, his mother was listed as Elizabeth Blum. His sister, Anna Margaret's marriage record did not show the mother's maiden name. The records show Conrad (14) shipping out of Hamburg in 1882 with sisters? Katherina (19), and Catherina (23) on "The Gellert", landing in Philadelphia. From there at least two of them made their way to Ontario. We still have questions. We've been told Conrad's mother was Elizabeth Kramer. Was she married twice? Did the girls have three or four given names thus choosing which ones they wished to be called when they emigrated? Where did the second sister? go? The Census in Canada answered that Anna Margaret emigrated in 1882. Anecdotal information was that Conrad came at the age of 14, travelled with an older sister and they left from Hamburg. A small trunk supposedly had Darmstadt printed on it, and a daughter of Anna-Margaret said they came from Darmstadt, Hesse, at that time apparently an Arch-Duchy of 1,200 towns and villages. I wonder if we'll ever find the answers? Andy
