    3. Hi Phil, Yes, you will need to know the town. The following information is from the book "Lands of the German Empire and Before" It will at least help narrow down the area of Hesse from which your ancestor emigrated. The state of Hesse was divided into Hesse-Nassau and Hesse-Darmstadt. Hesse-Darmstadt was further divided into 3 regions, Oberhessen, Rheinhessen and Starkenburg. Starkenburg is in the southeast part of Hesse. Major town/administrative areas in Starkenburg are Bensheim, Darmstadt, Dieburg, Erbach, Gross Gerau, Heppenheim and Offenbach.
