In 1800-1810 the area of Germany west of the Rhine River was annexed to the French Empire. All records were kept in French etc. After the French were forced out of the area in 1812-14 the area came under German occupation then was reorganized as part of several German states. I'd suggest reading up on the period of the Napoleonic wars to help you understand the history of this area at that time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly Howard" <bevbh@austin.rr.com> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2004 6:16 PM Subject: Re: [HESSE] Parish record gaps > I've also noticed that in several of the towns whose records I've looked at, there seemed to be change in the way the records were kept around 1800-1810. Indexing, if there is any, usually started around then too. In Gross Bieberau, that's also when the Family Book started. Was there a particular cultural or religious administration change at that time? > Beverly Bode Howard > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Daniel Jones > To: HESSE-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2004 3:48 PM > Subject: [HESSE] Parish record gaps > > > In searching in Rheinhessen, I've noticed a lot of parish gaps from about > 1796 through about 1810 and as late as 1830.
