    3. EYER is a rather rare name and does not have any significant population in the former territory of Hessen-Darmstadt. Today's concentration of this surname suggests that her origin most likely is in the Palatinate, more specifically in the closer area around and between the cities of Landau and Pirmasens. This region once belonged to the kingdom of Bavaria, as they once inherited the Palatinate. You may like to have a look there? Check yourself the relative name distribution under: http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/v3/MapGateway.aspx?name=eyer&target=DE&renderer=DE_DE&mode=rel You can use this tool for any other german or austrian family names by using this link: http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/v3/ Just enter the name, press "Kartieren", then click "Relative Darstellung von <YOURNAME>" Good luck, regards, Thierry   Dr. Thierry P. There seems to be an issue with accessing HADIS through direct links. Best is to start from the root and walk through the different hierarchies. Here is the path to walk: 1. http://www.hadis.hessen.de 2. Enter "Auswanderer-Nachweise" into search field end press enter 3. Within the search results click "HStAD :: Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt" 4. Then click "Auswanderer-Nachweise" 5. Now choose the initial letter of the family name of the person you're looking for ... and Good luck !!! Regards, Thierry Dr. Thierry P. You may be lucky and find summaries of documents online under http://www.hadis.hessen.de If you confirm me first name, last name, date and location of birth, date of emigration, etc. then I could have a quick look on HADIS online for you. They didn't have a passport or the permission to leave the country. Thus they had two options, either breaching law by trying to illegally emigrate with the risk of getting caught and being jailed and the risk that staying relatives were punished instead. Alternatively you had to apply for emigration. Usually this included that you needed to pay a certain sum, so you kind of "baught" yourself out. These applications and their responses (they were not always granted) usually are still available in archives and may help you identify the origin of your ancestors.
