According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baden-Baden the name "Baden" for the city was started in the middles ages (500 to 1500). The Romans had baths there, which was the origin of its name. It was named that until 1931 when it was renamed Baden-Baden. It was the seat of the margraves during most of that time. It is not to be confused with the Duchy of Baden-Baden, which was the southern (primarily Catholic) half of the Baden area, with the seat of power in the city of Baden. The northern (primarily Evangelische) half being called the Duchy of Baden-Durlach, with the seat of power in Karlsruhe. The two were combined into the GrandDuchy of Baden in 1771. In 1952 it was merged with the former Kingdom of Würtemberg and Principality of Hohenzollern to make the modern state of Baden-Württemberg.
