    3. 'Innenstadt' merely means 'city center' in any German city. It may mark the earlier city -- the late Medieval or Early Modern stage of the city's development -- look for curved streets that indicate location of earlier walls. The walls started to be brought down after cannon got so powerful that walls weren't much protection, like in the late 1600s, by which time the cities were also growing (except for the severe population set-back due to the 30 Years War 1618-1648).
