    3. No much. When the federal government opened Ellis Island for business, the states were told to turn over there manifests to the feds. These were stored on Ellis Island in "magazines" that were formerly used for ammunition. There was a great fire in 1897 in which they were all destroyed. What was not destroyed were the lists held by the Customs House. These lists were for the purpose of keeping track of what was brought into the country, so they could be taxed, if appropriate. What they contain are name, age, sex, occupation, place of origination, and destination. Keep in mind, most times the place of origination & destination are just the name of the country. "Class of travel" can sometimes be figured out when looking at the list. I personally have found errors on these lists. Perhaps haste in filling them out led to carelessness.
