Alzey is in the Palatinate. It was also part of Rheinhessen for a time. I've seen reference to it being part of Hesse at some point, but I'm not sure that information is correct. It was originally part of Lotharingen. I'm sorry, but my German Empire history and geography aren't up to snuff. I do know the Palatinate has a long, tragic and tangled history. Much like most of the rest of the remnants of the Holy Roman Empire. If they came from Palatine, they might not wanted to broadcast that and chosen to say they came from neighboring Hesse-Darmstadt. But, my history could be way off too. I struggle just understanding my little piece of of Hessian history in the Wetterau.
