    3. It is the browse and then the 4 things that are in German, I clicked one and upper right has arrow forward and back arrows after you have selected which letter of the person's last name and then can go to what ever page you think your name would be listed. But it is all in German so need to be able to read it. Good luck I can't so would not help me. Have you worked the Beta Family Search website? Some parts of Hesse are in there and many of my family have been found there. Are you certain that your family came from Darmstadt city or area around there? 3. What you have to do after you click on the HesseDarmstadt page is wait till it takes you there. Then click on the event you want. It will then give you another menu of options. Again keep entering until you get where you want to go. Then and only at that point does it load the images which you will have to thumb through individually. Hope this helps. 3. All that being said - I probably will still take a look at it just to see what it looks like. to get a feel for the writing and who knows? I might get lucky. Does anyone know if this only includes citizens of the city proper of Darmstadt, or did people from nearby towns have to apply for permission to leave in Darmstadt? My family is from Erzhausen, a little ways from Darmstadt. Is there any point in looking at these records for people who did not live in the city proper? Thanks Lenise Lenise Cook wrote: > It does appear that yes, you do have to search it manually. I see no > evidence of an index. 3. JW - I'm afraid I don't have any notes to trade. Everything I know so far is in the post I wrote. The general concensus on the Thüringen board is that I probably am looking at Kirchheim bei Erfurt. That is where I expect to begin. Brian - thanks for such a great tip. I will definitely check that out. Google translator is going to get quite a workout.

My G-grandmother was Amelia Knapp who came to America with her parents about 855 and I have an 1880 New York City marriage record that very clearly states er place of birth as Kirchhain b/Erfurt. Not being familiar with this town, I went looking for it in my Legacy Geo atabase and discovered two - one in Hessen and one in Brandenburg. The one in randenburg is actually listed as Doberlug-Kirchhain on Google Maps. My problem is that Kirchhain isn't exactly close to Erfurt. If someone was using rfurt to distinguish the location, wouldn't they have used Frankfurt instead? t's a major city closer to the Hessen Kirchhain than Erfurt is. So I looked at Erfurt on the map and discovered that there is a Kirchheim VERY lose to Erfurt - about 5km south of the city limits. Now I need to decide whether the record does indeed mean Kirchhain, or made an rror and should have written Kirchheim. I have tried in vain to locate this family in another record that would give me he answer. FamilySearch doesn't have anything at all on the family unit. Parents are Jacob Knapp and Henrietta Kraiser) As I'm new to German research, I ould welcome any ideas for finding them or any opinions as to whether the ecord means Kirchhain or Kirchheim. 2. I don't know if this will help you, but here goes. Searching on the German Wikipedia site, I get multiple hits for Kirchheim bei Erfurt. No actual articles by that name. Not big and famous enough, most likely. I get zero hits for Kirchhain bei Erfurt. Just saying, in my opinion, the place to look first is Kirchheim bei Erfurt. By the way, using the native language wikipedias is really great in helping to find things, or even the native language Googles. You'd be amazed at how different the result sets are. Ober Erlenbach, Freidberg, Groshertzog(ten) Hessen-Darmstadt Groshertzog, although not correctly written here or above, mean "Grand Duchy". You can add Germany on the end, but it's not really proper. I do it. Properly if you want to be entirely correct you could add "The German Nation of The Holy Roman Empire". I just use Germany for shorthand, but be prepared to have people tell you there was no "Germany" prior to such and such a date. ;') Both of these places have church records filmed by the Mormons. you can rent the films from special libraries or from Mormon centers in your area. Ober Erlenbach isn't very far (~13 mi/27km) from where my Hessian family comes from. You can go here to find places near you: https://library.familysearch.org/ HTH, Brian On Wed, January 26, 2011 2:35 pm, Coleen Thomas wrote: > aJ.
