    1. Re: [HESSE] Port of Antwerp
    2. David Rorer
    3. Antwerp was one of the logical ports of embarkation for emigrants. It would not be strange that they would have come through there. Not all emigrants traveled down the Rhine, some went overland to the port cities of the Netherlands. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianne Erickson" <wasieerick@milwpc.com> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 1:42 PM Subject: Re: [HESSE] Port of Antwerp > I have the same problem. 3. My LEYENDECKER family lived very close to the Rhein River just outside Coblenz. The easiest port for them was Antwerp since they could catch a boat out of Coblenz and travel the Rhein to Antwerp. John >>> "Dianne Erickson" <wasieerick@milwpc.com> 09/01/03 12:42PM >>> I have the same problem. Not only did Anton Reibold bring his family out by way of Antwerp, but GTA lists his place of origin as Hegnach. I know by U.S. census reports that this family is from Hessen-Darmstadt. My family left in 1846. I also know Anton's wife boarded with a three month year old, so I do not know whether they had to stop somewhere due to her pregnancy, but when I have looked at maps, they do appear to have taken a very strange route. I share this story because my family appeared to have done the same thing around the same period. I guess we need to find out what was going on around that time. 3. I have the same problem. 2. Peter C. Guins
    3. I have recently found information on the emigration of my ancestors from Hesse. They had been living in Allenrod as late as 1834 when their youngest child was born. They subsequently (some of them) sailed from Antwerp on the Philadelphia and arrived in New York 20 September 1847. Why would a family travel all the way to Antwerp to emigrate? Would it be more likely that they had spent some time in Antwerp before deciding to go to America? Any thoughts are welcome.

    1. [HESSE] Wilhelm/William Roos/Rose
    2. According to the Bible Record in the Pension Papers of Jacob Rose - son of Wilhelm - Wilhelm was born 14 Sep 1738 in Hesse Cassel. Can some one suggest how we might determine just where he was born. He married Elizabeth SCHOOLCRAFT 30 Oct 1760 in Schoharie County NY. I have not been able to find when he arrived in America. We are trying to determine if he had a brother who perhaps came with him. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Betty Rose Gregory Edmond OK

    1. Re: [HESSE] Re: Emailing Germany Protocol
    2. Hal Laube
    3. A bit more free advice - about worth what you paid for it-- A lawyer, Max Knecht, in Switzerland seeing my last name on e--mail was kind enough to suggest that since he lived near a village - Baldingen, Aargau, where there were many Laube families he would look up a few facts for me in local churches. We developed this plan - I wrote him in my language - English - and he wrote me in German. This way at least the writer gets the facts down on paper in the language in which he is least likely to make mistakes. This developed over the years into the most interesting correspondence. Max was able to get access and understood local records that I could never have done! I have lost track of him. He did not answer my last e-mails - several years ago now. His Knechts were intermarried with a Laube family, but we could not for many years connect that Laube family with my tribe. Then following up on a remembrance still alive in my family - that one Laube brother was born in Germany and the other in Arrgau. Switzerland. We narrowed our search down the northwest corner of Arrgau where there remained until after 1800, a German-Arrgau border, and there in a local church he found a Laube family that could have resided in house on the border - so open bedroom was in Germany and the other was in Switzerland. And that Laube family had a Knecht that was in his line and the Laubes were in mine - we were -from memory - sixth cousins. For you there are ways of getting very quick rough inaccurate translations - and in the meantime you can send your German text to on-line translators who will do an excellent job for free - in a week or ten-days Or at least this was so several years ago-- Keep your sentences very short and to the point. Do not try to make jokes. Limit each e-mail to one subject if at all possible. Be brief not windy as I am - best regards and I do hope this works out for you - it is an invaluable contact. I also have a contact in the small village of Unter-Schonmattenwag, which is a couple of miles south. I was there searching for info on my GGmother, Elizabeth Schroth who left there in 1873. I don't know what an Ortsfamilienbuch is... Chuck Sizer Johann Georg Krebs came from Waldmichelbach/Hessen. He was born in 1755. Married to Anna Barbara Muller on 19 November 1776. Anna was born in Leimen on the date 24 April 1754. I would be interested in contacting someone that knows the area or has contacts in the village (area). Also, is there a Ortsfamilienbuch available for the village of Waldmichelbach/Hessen or Leimen area? Jeff Krebs E-mail: jeffkrebs@shaw.ca ______________________________
