Hello, I just subsribed yesterday to this mailing list and am hoping to hear from the experts the best way(s) to go about finding birth records in Hesse-Darmstadt for my GGgrandparents listed below: 1) Wilhelmine Paar. She was born in Hesse-Darmstadt on the 5th of May 1845. I have no clue who were her parents and there is nothing listed for her at the LDS website. I found from "Germans to America, 1850-1874" at Genealogy.com that she she embarked from Bremen on the "New York" and arrived as a "20" yr old in New York on the 13th of May, 1867--there's no further info on her in this online record, except I can say that there were no other Paars on this ship. I have no clue about the names of her parents and there is no marriage or death record for her in New York. 2) Wilhelm Lutz. He was born in Hesse-Darmstadt in 1842 (don't know specific date). His parents were Johan and Barbara Anna Lutz and I think they came to the US in the 1850's, but not sure as there are many Lutz immigrants. I have no marriage record for Wilhelm (changed his name to William) and his obit says nothing about exact birthdate or place. Thanks a bunch in advance for any response! I have numerous family members named Caspar, Balthaser and Melchoir, None had nicknames or Americanized equivalants and I have never heard of any . All of my said ancestors were named Johann at birth until they received their Christian name at baptism , afterwhich they were always known as Caspar, Melchoir or Balthaser. C L WEIDEMEYER
There are names which can't be translated. But you may know the Bible and the 3 Kings (or Wise Men) from the East. In German, their names are Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Just substitute Melchior by the name by which the middle one is known in English, and you've got it. By the way, Martin is Martin in Germany. Heinz
While likely not an official translation of any kind, my gggrandfather's brother, Melchior, used "Michael" in the U.S. He came from a large family, and he did have brothers named Balthasar and Casper (the latter only lived for five months). This was a family from Switzerland, likely with German roots. Beginning search for: Anna Elizabeth SCHONFELD, b. 11 Oct 1846 in Darnsday?, Hesse Darmstadt. She came with parents: John SCHONFELD & Cathrine MULLER about 1853 to Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. "Eliza" married Joseph KANEY (KUHNE) on 4 Feb 1866 in Cincinnati & had several children. Would appreciate any suggestions as to records or indexes to search to find this family. I'm searching for records of my fourth Great Grandmother (b. Sep 1751 most likely) who stated that she was born and lived in Hanaus Land, six miles from Frankfurt, until she left for American in the summer of 1773. I've only been able to find one church for one town/village in the Hanau Kreis, and it was for Fechenheim. I suspect other village/town church records exist, but don't know how to locate them or who to contact? The records I found were from the LDS family History Library. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Carol Elk Grove, CA
Hello Dave! Not far away, in Kiedrich near Mainz and Wiesbaden, the priest wrote in 1632 that the most people in the town died because of pestilence and dysenteria.
