    2. Philip Roekle
    3. I am trying to locate information on my great-grandfather ADAM REHN and his twin brother ANDREAS REHN. They are reported to have been born around 1844 in the Marburg area. Both emigrated to America in the late 1860's and both were Lutheran ministers at the time of their migration to America. Any suggestions on how I might go about locating records in Germany relating to these brothers would be greatly appreciated. Philip S. Roekle Kalamazoo, MI

    1. [HESSE] VO(O)RBACH>1751 Netherlands
    2. Ralph Ravestijn
    3. Dear readers, my name is Ralph Ravestijn I am from Maassluis in the Netherlands and I am new to this list. The last name of my grandmother is Voorbach and her first male ancestor is Johannes Voorbach who married in Schiedam in 1751. In his marriage certificate he is said to be from Niederrosbach and he becomes a member of the Evangelian Lutheran church in Schiedam. At this moment of my life I don't have much time for genealogical research anymore though I feel fascinated about Johannes Voorbach and like to discover his roots. In 1742 Johanna Elisabeth Voorbach was baptized (Luthers) in Breda as daughter of Johann Conrad Voorbach (soldier) and Anna Margaretha Rosbach. The witnesses are Johan George Voorbach and Anna Maria Elisabeth Mühlin. I have not found a connection between them and Johannes Voorbach yet. My question is if someone has any information about any Vo(o)rbachs or has done research in Niederrosbach and can give me some advices. At http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/HES/heslit/heskb_da.html#niederrosbach I saw that the Familienbücher from Nieder-rosbach were published. Maybe someone possesses them and can see if the name Vorbach exists in Nieder-rosbach or knows how to order it. My excuses for too much text and too many questions. If you like to see it, you can find the pedigree of my daughter at http://www.xs4all.nl/~ravestyn/index.htm (the text is in Dutch) Have a nice day! Ralph.

His father Christian was the burgomaster of Weidelbach for twenty four years. He was 28 years old when he emigrated through New York Harbor. On December 13, 1864, three months after coming to America (approx Aug/Sept 1864) , he married Barbara Oberich, whose birthplace was not far from him and who was the daughter of George and Marie (Fae) Oberich. She was a fellow passenger on the same vessel which brought Mr. Hartung to the US. (Vessel name unknown) They settled in Monroe Co., NY. I have additional descendant information. I need some help with the ancestory!! Any helpers out there? Glenda Sheaffer

    2. Kathleen Schilling
    3. You might want to try churches in nearby towns. In my case, my 18th century ancestors lived in Hoechst a.d. Nidder, Hainchen and Altenstadt. I've found marriage, death and baptism records for "missing" people in each of those places. I've also found the same thing in 17th Strasbourg church records. They are in four different parishes there. Look at the records carefully, you might find a notation that the family lived in another town. 1. [HESSE] GRUNEWALD / KEMP
    2. I am looking for the origins of my families GRUNEWALD and KEMP. All I know is that they came from Hesse Darmstadt. I don't know of which area thereof. They may have been Catholics. JEAN GRUNEWALD was born in March 1818 and married CECILE KEMP . They arrived in New York City with their three young daughters on the ship "Messenger" via Antwerp on August 18, 1852. He died in NYC shortly thereafter (June 1, 1855). The family and their descendants remained in NYC. JEAN GRUNEWALD may have had siblings, all born in Hesse Darmstadt; Catherine born abt 1826, Elizabeth born 1827, Charles born abt 1828, Magdelena born 1837, Charles born 1838 and Catherine born 1841. I only know that these people, through the years, continued to live very close to my great grandparents. CECILE KEMP, Jean's wife had a twin sister, MARIE who was married to a WILLIAM DOCHNAHL (sp?) and lived in NYC, at least for a while. I have hopes that someone else may be researching any of the above persons. Evelyn Wright

    1. Re: [HESSE] Unlisted children in Church Records
    2. One idea is that the children could have been baptized elsewhere. Maybe the mother went home to her mother's or to a sister's house where she had the baby and the child was baptized there? Just a thought to consider. Ruth Cherecwich In a message dated 12/5/2003 6:52:19 PM Mountain Standard Time, jfrank@fsarchitects.com writes: In going through the Catholic church records of Lindenfels in the early 1800s and I find missing children. To a set of parents it will list first child, first son; second child, first daughter; and the next one might be fourth child, second daughter. The third child is not listed. Did they not list children that died? I have checked and rechecked for several missing children. They do not exist in the church. What was the policy of the church to children that were born dead? Were they baptized and then buried or just counted? Does anyone have an idea? Jay

    1. RE: [HESSE] church/birth records in Hessen-Darmstadt for Lutz/Roth/Paar--Success!!
    2. hamman
    3. Hello all, About 6 weeks ago I posted a message stating I was trying to figure out how find the birthdates and places for my Lutz and Paar ancestors that came to the USA from Hessen-Darmstadt. I had a number of replies/suggestions and so now I wanted to share with everyone how I successfully found my answers. I happened to have a baptism record for my Great-grandmother Ida Lutz, from the St. Peter's UCC in West Seneca/Erie Co., NY. After writing St. Peter's and never getting a response, I hired someone, Ned Schimminger, and expert on German genealogy in Erie County, and he went to St. Peter's and searched through their records. He successfully found everything I needed. From both his Confirmation and his death record, my GGgrandfather Wilhelm Lutz was born in Nieder-Bessingen, just north of Frankfurt, on the 20th of December 1843. His mother, Anna Barbara Roth (got her maiden name too!), was also born in Nieder-Bessingen, on the 26th of Jun 1805. Even Wilhelm's father, Johann Lutz, was also born in Nieder-Bessingen, in 1796 (St. Peter's did not have an exact date). Ned even found the marriage date for Wilhelm Lutz and Wilhelmine Paar that occurred in St. Peter's church on the 10th of Sep 1867. He is now going back to Trinity Lutheran Church, where Wilhelmine (Paar) Lutz died, to find her exact birthplace in Hessen-Darmstadt. So now that I know the town where my Lutz/Roth ancestors originated, I went back to the LDS site and searched for "Nieder" and found that church records for Nieder-Bessingen go back to 1651!! It therefore looks like I'm in position to trace my Lutz and Roth ancestors quite a ways back in Hessen-Darmstadt. Anyway, thanks a ton to all of you (there were many) who gave me advice. For me, german-american church records is where to start for trying to figure which town your ancestor came from. My next plan would have been to write the Hessen Darmstadt Archives in Germany as someone else on this list suggested to me. Best of luck to all! 1. [HESSE] LENHART family
    2. I am trying to trace my LENHART ancestors who, I believe, originated in Hesse-Darmstadt. I am having trouble tracing my paternal grandfather who is shown on his marriage certificate as HARRY LENHART born c1880/81,son of HARRY LENHART. Apart from this record, I can find no other trace of him in England (where the marriage took place), USA or Canada. I have found a Lenhart family living in London, England at the right time but I cannot link my grandfather to them. They seem to have been the only people in the country who bore that surname, spelt in that way.The head of this family was IGNAZ LENHART, a gun-maker, born in Hesse-Darmstadt c1833. His marriage certificate shows that his father was HEINRICH LENHART, a locksmith. IGNAZ came to England in 1855. The 1880 US census shows a HENRY LENHART, born in Hesse-Darmstadt c 1839. He was a "worker in safe works" in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. I think he may have been a brother of IGNAZ. I would think that similar skills are needed for all three jobs; i.e. locksmith, gun-maker and making safes, which suggests a family connection. If anyone knows anything about this family and HARRY LENHART, I would be delighted to hear from them.

    1. [HESSE] Kreis list for early 19th century Hessen/Kreis Humme

    3. Hello, Has anyone seen a list of the various Kreis's (counties) for Hessen, especially Hessen-Darmstadt, during the first half of the 19th century? I recently found out that my Lutz ancestors came from Niederbessingen (in 1856) which was clearly in Hessen-Darmstadt, just north of Frankfurt, but their church records also say they were from Kreis Humme and I cannot for the life of me find any mention of that county anywhere. So my other question is, has anyone ever heard of Kreis Humme? Is this a mistranslation of the church records? Thanks in advance, Brian Hamman --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I take it you found german Weippert records starting with a particular parish that contained Wernges? Were these the immigration or emigration records that you searched from the LDS? So you were not able to find your Domer (+all variations) ancestor in these records, but were you able to find your Weippert ancestor in these records? It's strange that the the Domer's were not also in that parish. Perhaps your particular Weippert ancestor moved a fair distance away from Wernges to a town where the Domer's lived? Do you know that your Domer ancestor was born in Hesse-Darmstadt? I suppose you also have their birthyear? If so, then you are in a similar situation to me, where you just don't know which town, and parish, has their records. I am contacting the LDS to see if they have any suggestions as to which microfilms I should order. I also plan to call the Hessen Darmstadt Archives in Germany to see if they have copies of old passports, or any other suggestions. I also am contacting the church in the US where my ancestor attended, to see if they happen to have details such as town of birth (their state death records and obits do not). Also, I plan to look other descendants that might happen to have info that was handed down. If all else fails, like you I might also go ahead and start ordering microfilms of Darmstadt church records--I estimate there could be up to 20 that I (or my wife who is German, but I'd have to bribe her!) would need to search through. It's frustrating that the germans haven't yet started putting an index of their church records online (or have they?). Anybody know whether there's any plan to do so? I am searching the WEIPPERT (WEIPERT) who I know were born in Wernges which is in the Lauterbach district. (Near Fulda). Now the tricky part is my line of WEIPPERT married a DOMER(DOHMER, DAHMER) who is also from Hesse-Darmstadt.... Can't find the Domer family of the right time period anywhere. I have even traveled to the village of Wernges. I have searched from the marriage of WEIPPERT/DOMER in various villages around Wernges. I have learned about the WEIPPERT family thought various times in HEssen-Darmstadt to 1665 other villages than Wernges. I have had a friend in Germany search the archives in Frankfurt only to find the name can't be found or he missed the ONE entry of DOMER,DOHMER,DAHMER. Guess what I can not even find the DOMER family by reading the immigration records from LDS.... Here are the Immigration records that I have read from LDS Film No. 2204337 immigration-Lauterbach 1820-1944. (and the years are not in any certain order) Film No. 2204577 immigration (not in any certain order of years traveled) Film No. 2204578 immigration ( various years no certain order) So now I keep serching at LDS the various town records that are located near Wernges.
