Dear Hesse List, I hate to ask this on this list, realizing this question is off topic. I will be travelling in Germany during Easter weekend. According to Fodor's, Good Friday, Easter, and Easter Monday are national holidays in Germany. Does this mean that all the stores, restaurants, churches, gas stations, restaurants, museums, etc. would be closed that whole time? I would love to know, so I can be prepared. My time will be short in Germany, so I am nervous about it. I will be in small towns and villages, and will not be on the autobahn or large highways. Thank you for your suggestions. Sincerely, Katherine
I have been asked to read/translate a terribly bad copy of an old page. At the bottom, the Text says, "Daß Solches mit dem hiesigen Kirchenbuche gleichlaute wird hiermit Sub Fidi pastorati beglaubigt. Loebenstein, den 3. April 1847. Johann Heinrich Mauhold. Pastor primar. dehigniet. Epkoriae Vicar" Is anyone familiar with Latin words "Sub Fidi pastorati" and with the title/office of this person who signed? Gisela Meckstroth Reynoldsburg, Ohio
In some mid 1800's German death records, I found this phrase which had been penned in, some years after the death event; I believe it is in Latin: " Vidi in visitatione decanali die 27 Jul 1865" It was signed by a church official, with the latin "decanus" for "deacon" under his name. I found several other similar entries with different dates and years. Does anybody know what this means and why it would be added to old death records ? Thanks Dave F

It is in the northeastmost area of Hessen, about 5.5 miles nw of the town of Eschwege. There are church and civil records filmed for surrounding parishes of Frankershausen, Albungen, Wellingerode, & Frankenhain (all in Kr. Eschwege); as well as Orferode, Kleinvach, & Weiden (all in Kr. Witzenhausen). I'd start with Wellingerode and work my way around these others. They may contain records for Hitzerode. These records are the ones filmed by the FHL and can be rented to your local FHC. Look them up in the FHLC for film#s and information. Dona Ritchie

All of the words helped and fit except "en conflatorius vitreu". It is located in the column with the villages where the marriage took place. It is the first column of a three column ledger. The middle column, the widest, contains the full written text of everything about the marriage. The third column contains the names of the bride and the groom. The text contains the village names that are listed in the first column, but it never contains "en conflatorius vitreu". The occupations of the people are generally listed in the text whether this phrase is included or not. The occupations were listed if they were more than common citizens. The "en conflatorius vitreu" words appeared in front of both important and standard citizens, I am still stumped. Again, thank you for the help. Jay -- Jay E. Frank,

I am having trouble with some of the words in German records. The Latin words that do not appear in any of the Latin or Latin Genealogical dictionaries to which I have access. Such as: Administratoris Archi=Satrapia Conto=graphic Dominus when this appears in front of a name of a witness does it mean that he is part of the clergy En Conflatorius Vitreu - appears where the village name normally appeared or listed at the front of the record Ludi=Magistri - Is this a school master? Piffer Pra¹tor Praetor Praitor Magistrate of village? Mayor or? Satrapi govenor of village? Scabini- what is the occupation Senator sometimes Venator Vage Vagibundi does this mean wanderer or gypsy or just not of this village Vigesime - appears in front of the date when it is listed and sometime only a month is provided. Vitriaricus Thanks for the help. Jay -- Jay E. Frank
