    1. Re: [HESSE] COESTER and HOTTENROTH in Allendorf
    2. Hi, About church records. I was in Germany in December and found the church records for one ancestor's small village in the archives at Speyer. They had been microfilmed by LDS and are also available at the Family History Centers. The church records for her husband's small village are still in the larger parish church (protestant) in the area. They are still using the same books started in the late 1700s/early 1800s to record today's births, deaths, and marriages! They have never been microfilmed. Carol

    1. [HESSE] GAERTNER from Frankenhausen
    2. Inquiry about JULIUS GAERTNER listed with FRANENHAUSEN on ship list in 1890. I found a ship passenger list that might include my husband's great grandfather on one of his several trips between NYC and Germany. He mostly came through Antwerp and now I see Rotterdam. He continued a family business - lace, buttons, and trim in NYC and had a silk mill. Although he was born in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) there is no record of the family there other than his birth and his sister's birth and one entry in an addressbook. We believe the family was from another area of Germany and are following up on the lead from this passenger list. By 1890 our Julius Gaertner had married in NYC and had a son. But, he did travel back and forth to Germany according to family oral history. Recent posting on the Internet confirm this along with items we have from additional voyages. I am hoping this listing of Frankenhausen might lead to his parents. Does anyone have suggestions on how to investigate more? I do not know where Franenhausen is specifically. I have been told there could be two in Hessen. Thank you. Marianne

    1. [HESSE] NOBEL in Veckenstedt und Badersleben
1. [HESSE] Help needed reading a death cert
    2. Gail Jorgensen
    3. I just received 2 death certs from New York City and one lists the mother with her maiden surname. It was from 1903 and the other lists the city in Germany of the descendants birthplace and it was from 1869. Both writers have German style handwriting and I can't understand the surname and the name of the city. Anyone able to receive a scanned copy of one or both by e-mail and try to see if they can make out the surname or the city? Gail Jorgensen California

    2. genie110
    3. Does anyone have access to Meyers Ort who would be willing to look up "Heinert" for me? I have checked as far as I am able to and have not located any town by that name in Germany. Perhaps it was once the name of a town back in 1813 and has since been incorporated into a larger one, specifically near Arolsen, Waldeck in Hesse. Thank you very much, Marion

    3. In 1882 Frankfurt-am Main was part of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau. However, Hesse-Darmstadt bordered Frankfurt-am-main to the south, so if he came from Hesse-Darmstadt you want to look outside of Frankfurt-am-Main. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nathan H Birx" <nhbirx@juno.com> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 10:30 PM Subject: [HESSE] BIRX>1882 USA > Looking for information on Heinrich BIRX, who immigrated to USA from in > or near Frankfurt-am-Main, in Hesse-Darmstadt in 1882. 2. Renee Harris
    3. Hi - I'm looking for someone who could check the following record since I don't read German well enough to make sure I don't miss the entry. (Fam.Hist.Lib. film # 1,442,144) Auswanderungsgesuche, M-S (Check 1850-1865) I'm looking for Anna Elizabeth SHOENFELD, b. 11 Oct 1846 of Frankfurt or Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. According to the Cincinnati Census Records, she came about 1853. She married in 1866 to Joseph KANEY(KUHNE) and died in 1936 in Norwood,Hamilton,OH. Her parents were supposed to be: John SHONFELDE & Catherine MULLER. I've checked numerous Cincinnati records & haven't found the parents at all. Perhaps they landed in Baltimore, MD. Appreciate any help. Renee __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Try it! http://webhosting.yahoo.com/ps/sb/

    1. [HESSE] Re: HESSE-D Sub Fidi pastorati, etc.
    2. In a message dated 1/18/2004 2:01:17 AM Eastern Standard Time, HESSE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: I have been asked to read/translate a terribly bad copy of an old page. = At the bottom, the Text says, "Da=DF Solches mit dem hiesigen Kirchenbuc= he gleichlaute wird hiermit Sub Fidi pastorati beglaubigt. Loebenstein, d= en 3. April 1847. Johann Heinrich Mauhold. Pastor primar. dehigniet. Epkoriae Vicar" Is anyone familiar with Latin words "Sub Fidi pastorati" and with the tit= le/office of this person who signed? Hello Gisela: "sub fidi pastorati" is possibly "sub fide pastorale" = under pastoral faithfulness or diligence, referring to the manner in which Mauhold certified the accuracy of the record with the church book. "Epkoriae" doesn't appear to be a Latin word, but the second phrase might be: "Pastor primar(ius) designat(us) episcopalis vicar(ius)" = Head (or primary) Pastor, appointed episcopal vicar. An episcopal vicar was a cleric, priest or bishop who exercised responsibility and authority over certain affairs within a diocese. Paul C. Miller
