    1. [HESSE] Becker-Kramer-Blum
    2. Andy/Norma McAuliffe
    3. Dear Listers: I'm researching the origin of Conrad Becker, supposedly of Grosen-Buseck, Hesse-Darmstadt. From good authority in genealogy there, we have been given what they believe to be true. The ages, and arrival times match very well. Our dilema is on Conrad's marriage record in Ontario, Canada, his mother was listed as Elizabeth Blum. His sister, Anna Margaret's marriage record did not show the mother's maiden name. The records show Conrad (14) shipping out of Hamburg in 1882 with sisters? Katherina (19), and Catherina (23) on "The Gellert", landing in Philadelphia. From there at least two of them made their way to Ontario. We still have questions. We've been told Conrad's mother was Elizabeth Kramer. Was she married twice? Did the girls have three or four given names thus choosing which ones they wished to be called when they emigrated? Where did the second sister? go? The Census in Canada answered that Anna Margaret emigrated in 1882. Anecdotal information was that Conrad came at the age of 14, travelled with an older sister and they left from Hamburg. A small trunk supposedly had Darmstadt printed on it, and a daughter of Anna-Margaret said they came from Darmstadt, Hesse, at that time apparently an Arch-Duchy of 1,200 towns and villages. I wonder if we'll ever find the answers? Andy

Ulrich HOLBE had a son, Johannes, baptized January 28, 1720. Johannes had a son, Wilhelm, born November 20, 1742, baptized November 25, 1742. This Wilhelm emmigrated to America, along with some of his uncles and father. His father died shortly after arrival, Wilhelm was raised by Sylvester, another brother of Ulrich and Johannes. 3. I'm leaving for Europe in a week and I would appreciate very much any last minute help that someone on the list might provide before I leave! I have already received substantial help from fellow listers elsewhere but still I am unable to determine exactly what town or village in the Hesse-Darmstadt area my g.g.grandfather's family are from. We are looking for the origins of the Henry Shober (b. ca. 1810) family of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany; his wife, Elizabeth ...?, is shown (1860 US Census, Lake County, Illinois) as born in Hesse-Kassel in about 1826. A Frank Shober (my g.g.grandfather?), that was cited by a fellow lister as "b. Germany - 1856", may be the right one (at least the approximate birth date is correct) as he is shown as age 4 in the 1880 census for Lake County, Illinois. But, perhaps the family immigrated several years earlier as the 1860 census has Frank and his two older brothers (George 8, John 6) shown as born in Illinois - not Germany. (Or, as has been suggested, maybe there's something wrong with our information!?). I hope that by some means I am able to determine exactly what town or village in Hesse the Shober family are from before we arrive in Germany. Is there a central archival directory in Germany for that general area, or? Failing that, I'm not at all sure where to start once we are in Germany. Any suggestions?? Thanks again for your help! Sincerely, Frank J.

    2. Robbie L. Oxier
    3. NatureI am researching my Axer family ancestry. My family lived Armsheim, Lonsheim, Ensheim, Bermersheim, Bornheim and Woerrstadt region in the 1700's and then some later in Kaiserslautern, Mainz, Alzey. Because of the French invasion the Armsheim church records were destroyed. I do not know when they came to this region, but I think that it was after the thirty-year war. Their descendants may still be in the Rhineland-pfalz region. Some of my ancestors were Johann George Axer, Johann Michael Axer, Johann Christian Axer, Peter Axer, Johann Werner Axer, Johanetta Axer, Johannes Axer, Anna Maria Axer, Johann Heinrich Axer, Anna Catherina Axer-Kasse, Anna Barbara Axer-Saeger, Anna Elisabetha Axer-Schmitt. Is there anyone who may have access to the Churchbooks of these places? Is anyone else researching this family? Other Variations are AXERS, AX, AXE and AXEN. Any information would be of great help. Thank you, Rob Oxier rloxier@woh.rr.com

    3. Good morning, My sincere thanks to all you kind folks who answered my request for a translation. I now have two more bits of information about my greatgrandfather. I'm so glad I asked. Several of you suggested that I might have sent more information in my original posting to help in translation or just give others a chance to learn from the answers. That's a good idea. I received a Vorfahrenliste (I guess that roughly translates to Ancestor list) from Hessische familiengeschichtliche Vereinigung e. V. in Darmstadt, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. A letter of mine, in German, to a gentleman in Germany researching the same surname, was forwarded to them. The answer to my question about ancestors of Georg SCHAMBACH, my greatgrandfather, included information about his parents and grandparents. My question to this list was about the abbreviations in German following his birth date. I knew his birth date and that he had been born in Bensheim, Hesse Darmstadt. Here is what I was sent: SCHAMBACH, Johann Georg *23.09.1824 rk 2.Kind=1.Sohn Bensheim Translated this means: * Birth date,23 September, 1824 rk Roman Catholic 2.Kind second child 1.Sohn first son Bensheim birth place His parents were Johann Theobald SCHAMBACH, baptized 24 November, 1798, rk Bensheim and Katharina DORN, baptized 28 September, 1799 rk Bensheim. They were married 7 May, 1822 in Bensheim. Grandparents were Johann SCHAMBACH married to Katharina EMIG and Nicklas DORN married to Sophia HILLENBRAND. I had a lot of help from the translation team at http://www.genealogienetz.de/misc/translation.html when I was sending letters and e-mails back and forth. I can say only good things about them! I don't know if all this will help anyone else, but I hope so. This research has been a grand learning experience for me! And if anyone knows of these ancestors I would love to hear from you. Again, thanks for the kindness in helping me. Helen

    2. In Germans to America I found my immigrant ancestors from Allendorf an der Werra, Hessen-Nassau. In 1857Georg and Elisa Hottenroth came with children, Hanchen, Georg-M., Henriette, Ellevine, Anna-Elisabeth and Heinrich. The next person listed is Koster, Heinrich-F.(who later married the travelling companion Henriette Hottenroth.) I have an old handwritten record from the church (I think) that indicates that Martha Elisabeth Ruckert married Johann Heinrich Hottenroth but that he died in 1856. This old record lists all the above mentioned children and a couple more so I think this is the right family. Just the wrong adult male travelling with the mother and children. Does anyone have suggestions on what happened here? Georg is two years younger than Elisa. Did the younger brother marry the widow? Did the brother accompany the family to America to help out? Does anyone have access to records in Allendorf that could help me? Are there German customs on how young widows adapted in this situation? I cannot find Georg or Elisa in census records after arrival in NYC. The male children can be tracked eventually and they are all in the nyc area. Thank you for your help. 1. [HESSE] Re:Reinmiller in Friedewald
    2. There are three entries in the catalog of the Family History Library for Friedewald. One in Schlesien, one in Hessen-Nassau, and one in Westfalen. Two have church records, one has civil records. If you can determine which Friedewald your ancestor came from you can order the correct microfilm. If not, order them one at a time until you find your ancestor in one of them. Sue Foster Co-Director FHC Puyallup Washington South Stake
