    1. [HESSE] GARTNER/STANG family
    2. Lance
    3. I am looking for information on my ancestor: PETER GÄRTNER b: 1720/1721 d: before 1798 probably in Volmer, Russia. He married: MARIA ELISABETH STANG b: 1740 or 1745. Her 2nd husband was JOHANNES ULIRICH b: 1728. PETER GÄRTNER was a Catholic farmer from Kurpfalz, Worms Town. From what I can gather, Kurpfalz describes a general area not a specific town or city, or is it a state? Worms Town, I am guessing is the famous City Worms. Where should I look to figure out which church my ancestor may have been a member of? Could someone help me with understanding of how to define the geographic information in regards to the 1600-1700's time period: Country: Germany State/Province:Baden ? County:Kurpfalz ? City:Worms Region: Baden also known as :Baden-Wüttemberg Kurpfalz, also known as :Palatinate I am taking a leap in assuming that: MARIA ELISABETH STANG b: 1740 or 1745 was a child or niece of: BERNARD STANG b:1716 in Wallernhausen, Büdingen,Hessen (state), Germany. I have also seen a location of Nidda used to describe where a STANG ancestor was from. Can someone explain to me wherethis is. I am interested in knowing where I should look for Catholic Church records this area. First of all is the following correct for the 1600-1700's: Country: Germany State/Province: Hessen County: Büdingen City: Wallernhausen Where can I find good maps that may help me put these two family locations into perspective? I am assuming they are fairly close together as many GARTNERS and STANGS married each other durring this time frame according to family trees. Thank you very much, Angela Gartner Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.

    2. Hello List - I've finally been able to print records from Germany for my family. I have a baptism from 1826 that I need help translating. The handwriting is not bad (as far as I can tell). I can make out some of the words, but would like to know what the rest says, since the minister used the same format for all baptisms. Is there anyone who could translate the Gothic script into modern German (so I can see letter for letter what's there) and then help with the translation to English as well? I could scan and email the copy. Thanks, Anita, Ontario, Canada

    2. Heinz L. Zulauf
    3. No significance, Jackie, I'm sorry. "Valtin" is a dialect form of "Valentin" and still used in some areas. "Frederick" is most likely an Americanized form of "Friedrich". And, btw, a "von" could not be sold for any money in the world. Most likely one of these nice family stories. Heinz

    1. [HESSE] Title - Name Selling
    2. George & Jackie
    3. This list was very helpful a short while ago and I'm hoping you can come to the rescue again. My family name is Schott. My Aunt says that my grandmother told her the name was originally Von Schott but that the Von was a title and it was sold in order for the family to come to America. I've never heard of anything like this. Perhaps the family owned land which was sold and dropped the Von? Perhaps my grandmother told stories to my Aunt. My greatgrandfather (Schott) was known by the first name Frederick, and the papers I have for him list it as his first name. However, I'm having trouble finding him on ships lists which may indicate trouble finding him in Germany. I did find one individual coming over on the same ship, about 2 weeks before the date indicated on Frederick's petition for naturalization, but the first name was Valtin, not Frederick. I believe it's the same person. On the same date and ship there were 2 additional families whose family name has been mentioned as being related to the Schott family. I guess my question is, is there a relationship betweent the 2 names? Is there any signifance to the name Valtin? Thanks very much. Jackie

    1. [HESSE] KNOBELOCH > 1850s USA
    2. I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Heinrich KNOBELOCH, and his wife, Maria Katherine MAIER. They are listed in several US censuses as being from Hesse Darmstadt. They emigrated to the USA in the 1850s and settled in Perry County, INDIANA. Several of their children were born in Germany. Heinrich was born 7 Aug 1818 and his wife was born 1 Mar 1819. That is all I know of their origins. I would like to find out where they were from, who their parents were and who their siblings were. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks. Cal Knobeloch

    3. Just for future reference: There is no Sh or sh in German. Everything which is spelled like that in English is in fact Sch or sch. So the family name here would be "Schober". Heinz

    1. [HESSE] ROTH> 1863 USA
    2. Duane/Rita Lamers
    3. Edward ROTH emigrated from Germany via Hamburg on the ship Germania in July 1863 at the age of 15. The emigrant passenger list lists ROTH as from Reiskirchen in Kurhessen. In later years ROTH told his family that he had left Germany at a very young age to escape military conscription. We know nothing more about him except that his birth date is 17 October 1848. His children were baptized Catholics in America and he was given Catholic burial. He was not married in the Catholic church in 1878, however. I am trying to establish the precise locality or parish where his family was living in 1863 so that I may attempt to do the research myself into his ancestry. Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! The following information is from the book "Lands of the German Empire and Before" It will at least help narrow down the area of Hesse from which your ancestor emigrated. The state of Hesse was divided into Hesse-Nassau and Hesse-Darmstadt. Hesse-Darmstadt was further divided into 3 regions, Oberhessen, Rheinhessen and Starkenburg.
